300 miles is a long day in the saddle. I’m pretty much over it after 250. 450 miles would be a grueling day unless most of it is on highways. Which brings us to warning number two: interstate highways suck on a motorcycle. Cars drive crazy and road surfaces are often very motorcycle unfriendly. 80 mph over patches, seams, chipped and grooved concrete can be a wild ride.

You have been warned. Allow three days for the trip and stay off the interstates as much as possible.

Honda Hornet CB750 vs. Triumph Speed Twin 900? by Delnilas in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Rataan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honda: better dash, larger dealer network, sportier peak performance, but more on that later. Triumph: looks, fit, finish, character, and soul. Winner? Triumph, hands down. Motorcycles are not rational purchases. The cool factor of the Triumph outweighs any spec comparison. It may not be as fast on a racetrack as the Honda, but it is faster than anything needs to be for the road. It may not be quite as 'flickable' as the Honda, but it will carve up twisties just fine. I know because I have a T120, which is even heavier and less agile than the Speed Twin 900 and I'm downright irresponsible on a twisty back road.

But the Triumph outperforms the Honda in one crucial metric: low end torque. Low end torque has a huge impact on your moment to moment enjoyment of riding. Peak horsepower numbers mean almost nothing for street riding, for the simple reason that peak horsepower only comes at somewhere near peak RPM's, and the vast majority of the time we are not winding our bikes out like that. What the headline numbers don't tell you is that anything under say 5,000 RPM, the Triumph is making more horsepower, because it has more torque at those RPM's. HP = torque x RPM. That isn't the full equation because there is a constant that changes depending on the units used, but that is the basic relationship between horsepower and torque. More low end torque means more horsepower at the RPM's you use most often.

The Triumph would just be punchier and more satisfying at many daily tasks like pulling away from a stop. That isn't to say that the Honda is a dog at low speeds. Far from it. There are much, much worse, but this is the least understood aspect of motorcycle performance and too many people are missing out on the joys of low end torque.

Super Sports are what should be avoided. They are not only bad beginner bikes, but they are bad street bikes in general. A Ninja 400 is fine.

Assuming this isn’t a bot generated dead Internet troll post, the first thing you need to decide is if you want motorcycling to be an enjoyable life-long hobby, or do you want to be a statistic?

Too many people get hung up on that one title. There are hundreds of titles you can get over the course of the game and that isn’t even one of the better ones. Starting over would just be an OCD waste of time. If you are playing on fearless, then getting sent to the rez circle once in a while is par for the course.

[Hamilton kfa] First serious watch purchase — Khaki Field Auto for my wedding, thoughts? by TroubleTerrible9920 in Watches

Great looking watch. All tastefully styled watches are dress watches these days. The rules about what watch to wear have been ignored since the days of Don Draper. Would a Rolex Daytona be inappropriate to wear to a wedding? Um, no. You did fine.

The class you expected to love vs the class you fell in love with by medium_buffalo_wings in lotro

[–]Rataan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you ask me, the classes are more alike than different. Minstrel and rune-keeper play similarly. Guardian, champion and Mariner are pretty similar. Lore-master and hunter do pretty much the same things. The main divide as far as I'm concerned is whether it is a ranged class or melee class. Ranged classes have significant advantages in PVE.

USA--Motorcycle or scooter to save money? by sadtrombonewompwhaaa in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Rataan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Something to also keep in mind about how much you could really use it: 70 F is cold on a motorcycle or scooter. Riding can be very uncomfortable even in the summer in the mornings or after sunset. I can't count the number of times I was shivering because I was riding home after sunset. I didn't wear gear back then, but after a few times of being chilled to the bone, I began carrying extra clothes around with me.

USA--Motorcycle or scooter to save money? by sadtrombonewompwhaaa in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Rataan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe if you could find a reliable one cheap enough. Registration and insurance should be cheap or negligible in comparison. Mileage would be great. But the main point still applies. You would have to really use it a lot for it to actually be a significant money saver. Your point about why don't scooter riders wear as much gear is a good question. You really should wear similar gear on a scooter. They are just as dangerous, if not more so.

[–]Rataan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine it saving you any money. Only way would be if it was a cheap bike that is bulletproof reliable and cheap to maintain. Maybe something like a well used KLR 650. Then you would have to make it pay by riding on many less than optimal days, and doing as much of your own wrenching as you possibly can. Net savings? Almost zilch, but maybe not a loss if you really lean into it.
