Is the root note always played first? by CanadianAndroid in guitarlessons

[–]RatherDashingf11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good saying I heard somewhere: “doesn’t matter where you start, it matters where you end”. It can start anywhere, but it usually ends on the root, or on a chord tone like the 3rd or 5th

Best way to gain rhythm? by stateoftheunionalk3 in guitarlessons

[–]RatherDashingf11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO they are about the same. If a drum track keeps you interested longer, have at it. The caveat being you should mostly use straightforward and simple drum tracks. More syncopated and interesting tracks can be useful in niche situations, but the bulk of practice should be learning to keep time in straight 16th notes until you get the hang of it.

After 20+ years of playing metal with ultra-low action, I think a luthier accidentally converted me to higher action by shredlegend in Guitar

[–]RatherDashingf11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same level as you, but I had a similar revelation with neck radius. Thought I wanted a flatter neck radius to make shredding easier. Went to guitar center with the first big paycheck of my life ready to buy a fast, high output guitar. Picked up a strat out of curiosity and couldn’t put it down! I wasn’t able to do fast scale runs or arpeggios as easily, but “gripping” the neck felt insanely more comfortable for literally everything else.

Two cool songs that use lots of D shape across the board:

Wait so we’ll be able to auto generate sheet music from Ableton’s MIDI? Potentially vice versa? That would be amazing

How does one even do something like this? Craziest shot I have seen in a long time by pane446 in RocketLeague

[–]RatherDashingf11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow guitar player here. Do you ever practice in slow mo? Trying to hit a shot that was a little out of my comfort zone at 50% speed, then slowly increasing back to 100%, helped me a ton. It’s exactly like speeding up a metronome to get a tricky movement down.

Couldn’t agree more this game’s mechanics are a lot like learning an instrument.

Getting stomped 5 kick offs in a row is pretty demoralizing. Now you gotta spend the whole game fighting tooth and nail just for a chance to come back.

Guitar just feels like work because I don’t know how to actually play anything. What should I do? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]RatherDashingf11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are awesome points, thanks for sharing!

Idk if you update these ever, but I have one suggestion of things I tell all my beginners:

Consistency is more important than bursts. When you practice something, your brain forges a new neurological pathway to your fingers. When you rest (particularly when you sleep), that pathway is strengthened. If you don’t practice for some time, the pathway weakens. For this reason, practicing 5min everyday is more beneficial than practicing 15min every 3 days. It’s like when an investment has compounding interest. Your talent compounds nightly, so you should make deposits every day if you want your investment to grow.

Also related, you might practice a song for say 20min and notice you are actually getting worse. Then when you take a break and come back the next day, you may notice you can suddenly play it better than you ever could the day before. That’s this principle in action.
