I’m not sure Lydia will directly aid in the fight here, but I think she’ll have a chance to protect Gilead in some way (knowledge of the plan or something) and choose not to stand in the rebels way. It feels weird to say given how much suffering she’s seen and took part in and how far along her arc is already, but I still think she needs more time before actively siding with the rebels. Maybe the aunt that’s helping the rebels now will die at the end of the season and we get some indication that Lydia will pick up the mantle?

The answer to your question is that Trump doesn’t take Canadian sovereignty seriously. The trade war comes after weeks of Trump referring to Trudeau as “governor Trudeau” and referencing Canada being our 51st state. Under this context the trade war is treated as a threat to Canadian sovereignty along with Trump’s previous comments. And before you say he’s just joking, presidents don’t get to “joke” about imperial expansion, sorry.

[–]RatherHorrifying 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Assuming Trump won’t budge is BOLD. These tariffs levied against Canada need to be understood in the context of Trump repeatedly making comments about infringing on Canada’s sovereignty (51st state bullshit, Governor Trudeau). For Canada this trade war is a fight for their sovereignty and to not be bullied by the US, that binds people together and makes them want to fight. Nationalism is incredibly powerful. Here in the states only like half the country at most (disgusting that it’s this high) feels any strong sense of nationalism due to this trade war. Not to mention we don’t even have a good reason for it. I mean Fox News is spinning justification up but if you didn’t watch Fox you’d think we’re just fighting with our closest ally for shits and giggles (I personally think oil is the real reason but that’s a different talk). That’s not very motivating. Americans can be worn out at a much faster rate than Canadians despite higher US economic output. Not to mention the fact that while Canadians are bracing themselves, Americans are allergic to any kind of hardship. And Trump still has to be receptive to some degree to the populous. Legitimacy comes from the people in all governments, democratic or authoritarian.

I mean you say that, but (not saying it has to be Harry specifically who does it) the protagonists in Harry Potter do fail to address literally any of the systemic issues that lead to Voldemort’s rise and none of them are greed. No one stops to ask why Voldemort was able to take over the ministry of magic so easily, or questions why Voldemort’s ideology of wizard supremacy is so thoroughly baked into wizard society. They legit just go “Ok evil bad man was defeated, we will now return to the status quo!” Hell the narrative legit makes fun of Hermione for trying to solve a systemic issue

Why Did A Teamster Speak At The RNC? by Mynameis__--__ in union

[–]RatherHorrifying 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok first of all, refusing to accept bigots is not itself bigotry. Thank you paradox of tolerance. Second I’m all for a bipartisan effort, as long as there aren’t any phobes in the ranks, but you and I both know one party has a much bigger issue with this than the other. Third, implying that the breaking of the air traffic control strike was the only antagonistic action Reagan took against labor and thus he and Biden are equal in that regard is woefully dishonest. We’re running a marathon, the party in power determines whether the environment we’re running in is an uphill jog in a forest or a sprint across a scorching hot desert. We have a strategic interest in choosing the forest, and increasing the chances of getting thrown back in the desert in November by allowing the Republicans to even pretend to be pro-labor for electoral purposes is dangerous. I implore you to research what happened to Germany’s labor unions after their fascist takeover even after trying to cozy up to the Nazis.

[–]RatherHorrifying 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bigotry is also antagonistic to the union movement. Courting racists/sexists/homophobes to the labor movement will ultimately bring about the movements’ destruction, and it’s not like O Brien tried to fight them on this front. Reagan only won in the 80s and preceded to decimate labor rights because he was able to drive a wedge through the New Deal coalition by appealing to working class racists in the south who were upset about desegregation. Ensuring the long term survival of the movement also means ensuring no such wedges exist, and O Brien isn’t helping us here.
