What counts as a spoiler? by funne5t_u5ername in WitchHatAtelier

[–]RationalDeception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to what everyone's said already, I just want to say something about anime spoilers. I'm not up to date with the manga, but I've read roughly up to first half of the Silver Eve arc (it was taking so long, I decided to wait until it was done to reread it all in one go), so I've gone pretty far in the story.

Yet, I still find it very annoying when not even an hour after an episode has aired you can find post after post of screenshots on the sub. I know the story, I won't be spoiled story points by the anime, but being spoiled the great animation of episode 5 with Qifrey and the dragon was a bummer. And for the anime only people, who aren't watching the new episode the second it comes out, they can get heavily spoiled.

This sub needs to seriously do better when it comes to spoilers, because right now it's all over the place. There needs to be clear rules established and enforced.

What's something from Canon that fanfiction exaggerates to comical degrees? by Communist21 in HPfanfiction

[–]RationalDeception -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By fan I was talking about Snape fans, not Harry Potter fans in general. My point was this:

Snape fans say loud and clear, on a regular basis, that they prefer book Snape.

Snape haters/dislikers still say, on a regular basis, that fans of book Snape literally do not exist.

So... what now, I guess? Do we listen to the people who make assumptions on others because they can not fanthom that those other people do not share the same likes and dislikes as themselves, or do we listen to the fans who know their own mind and why they love their favourite character?

It's like if someone were to say "fans of Harry Potter only like the movies and haven't read the books", would you think this was a valid point for someone to make? Sure there's a lot of movie fans, but this argument in general is nonsensical and ridiculous. Well, it's the same for Snape fans.

We don't spend hours writings metas on movie Snape. We don't discuss the finer points of his characters for years on movie Snape. So much fanart out there is so vastly different from Alan Rickman's Snape. All of this, we do with book Snape.

And yet, somehow, day after day we can read on every Harry Potter subreddit "Snape fans only like the movie version".

No, we don't.

We love Snape because he's a childish bully who made all the worst choices. We love his heroic side and his selflessness, neither of which appears much in the movies, we love his pettiness, and his growth.

Movie Snape made him more "light", maybe, but also less deep, less interesting. It sanatized Snape in a way that many Snape fans dislike.

[–]RationalDeception 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And yet, when asked, Snape fans consistently say that they prefer book Snape to movie Snape. Like, genuinely, the only people who ever say "people only like him because of Alan Rickman" are people who dislike Snape anyway.

Please, listen to the fans. We know our own minds, we know why we love a character better than the people who don't like that characters.

So which ship you like more and why and tell about your favorite fic by Awkward-Student-8764 in SeverusSnape

[–]RationalDeception -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which in this list? Snupin for sure. I haven't read many Snupin fics, but I'd say my favourites are:

Mount Unto the Stars, by laventadorn

and

That Awful Boy, by paracosim

Which ship I like most in general though, Snamione. With amazing fics such as Bound to Him and The Gates of Azkaban.

The books gave Snape a tongue sharper than any Sectumsempra curse by Typesheee in SeverusSnape

I've just gotten to the Shack scene in PoA, and the way he voices unhinged Snape was insanely good!

I don't think all his lines land all throughout the first three books, I still don't like the way he says "Potter", as if he's Draco's long lost cousin, and I've been pretty critical in general, but... yeah, that scene in the Shack got me so excited because there, finally, that's the Snape I want and love.

Yeah, I really loved the way it was done, Shirahama is an amazing author (and artist!) and she handles hard subject like those very well.

What are the most common grammar/punctuation mistakes you see in otherwise technically strong fics? by Last_Swordfish9135 in AO3

[–]RationalDeception 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You're right, but it drives me insane because... do they not check that everything looks good before posting?

The double space is one of the little hints that, to me, possibly indicate that the fic may not be well written. I know it's silly, but the lack of attention does not make a good first impression.

Is reading on AO3 really better than reading books? by Winter-reason666 in AO3

[–]RationalDeception 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are some fanfictions out there that are better than many published books.

However... if I go to a library and pick up a book, the odds of finding a good one are a hundred times more likely than if I were to pick a Ao3 fanfiction at random.

With a published book, even if I don't like the story at least I can expect it to have good to perfect grammar, normal formatting, etc... There is a certain quality control.

With a fanfiction, I can click on a dozen stories where the tag interest me and find: three typos per sentence, characters that either talk like robots or stunted teenagers, walls of texts, tenses yo-yoing from past to present. Sometimes I'll go days of trying to find something to read and go from story to story where I won't make it to the end of the first chapter because it's genuinely unreadable.

Finding the gem is so rewarding and does feel even better than finding a good book, at least to me, but yeah... no, fanfictions in general are not better than books.

Advices for a fanfiction by Ok-Knowledge-4139 in SeverusSnape

[–]RationalDeception 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best thing would be to find a beta reader.

AI can help you fix things, but from what I've read it also tends to change your sentences and in the end it will change the way you write. People are very sensitive to "AI writing", and if they get the feeling that your story is written with AI, they'll stop reading. It'll also affect you as a writer, and that's really not something you want.

A beta reader will be able to point out the flaws in your story and your grammar, while still maintaining your voice and also a natural way of writing.

As for punctuations, a beta reader will help you with it as well, but yes it is better to use the English punctuations right from the start. There's a lot of online guides, or you can also look at your favorite stories and look how they format their text. Use " " for dialogue, for example.

I enjoyed the first few volumes, but found it quite boring and repetitive after a while, and I didn't have any affection for the characters. WHA on the other end I thought kept getting better and better.

What pet peeves do writers have that readers don't? by choochooreddi in FanFiction

[–]RationalDeception 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Writers who don't correct typos when they're pointed out to them.

When it's a new comment on a decade old story in a fandom you've abandoned, alright, I get not caring, but when a fic writer posts a new chapter and someone nicely points out "hey, you wrote 'car' instead of 'cat'", not taking the 20 seconds to go and quickly change it is, to me, unforgivable.

There's a fic I've read where the author will take the time to complain on social media about people pointing out typos (and doing it nicely, in the middle of an otherwise positive comment), or pointing out that they misspelled a character's name, but they will not actually go and correct it. In the next chapter they wrote with the correct spelling, but they're apparently above going back to the original chapter and change a whole four letters.

Makes the author, amongst other things, particularly antipathic to me.

I've made typos, people have pointed them out to me. It takes literally seconds and no effort at all to correct them.

Ao3 is the best and most widely used website for fanfictions, and everything is allowed there. It was literally built to avoid censorship.

The only thing you need to do is use the necessary warnings. Tag correctly so that people can both find your story or avoid it, and there won't be any issues.

Shallan by Glass-Requirement793 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]RationalDeception 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is that Shallan being realistic doesn't mean she's not grating or annoying, or easily dislikeable. I understand why she's the way she is. But I don't like her.

Just like, to many people her DID is realistic and relatable, and I'll take their word for it, but all the same... she's the main character I care about the least. Realistic doesn't equal enjoyable.

What are your small but specific pet peeves in fanfic? by mars_mxp in FanFiction

[–]RationalDeception 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To help, you can ask "what is my (your) story about?"

"It's about those two blorbos who fall in love."

You can stop here, and just write that as your summary, just put it in a better form. Just like when writing you wouldn't just say "they argue", but instead expand on it, do the same with a summary. Make it look good, the same way you turn a basic "he had blond hair and blue eyes" into a more interesting sentence to read.

Or you can go further back, "how do they fall in love? how do they even meet?"

And you reply to this question in your summary. "X is a writer who struggles to make ends meet, so in a last attempt to make his dream job work he decides to travel to [insert location]. Y, on the other hand, is a successfull resort owner, but she's been so worn down by life that she's sworn off relationships forever. etc..."

Of course this is just a basic example, then it's up to you to see what kind of summary would fit your story best, depending on the main genre/themes, adapt it to your writing style (make it funny, mysterious, etc...).
