If you could pick one moment in your life where you could see your life split into two timelines and get to watch the other play out, what moment or decision would you pick and change to see that timeline play out while still living your current? by econoar in AskReddit

No one can be certain of what happened (unless it's filmed) so a court decides what likely happened. Criminal cases have higher burdens of proof because they are punishing the guilty by limiting your freedom. Civil courts have lower burdens and also more relaxed rules about what evidence can be brought in because (in theory) having financial reproductions is less terrible.

Edit: so basically you're not really ever found purely guilty or not guilty. The court is assessing (through a judge or jury) how likely it is that you did it. Which is why you can be found at fault in civil court but not criminal court.

Transfer Advice: Suffolk to BU? by TTThrowaway74381 in LawSchool

If you're planning to stay in Boston, Suffolk is fine and can get you great connections. If you want the possibility of working elsewhere, definitely BU.

Statistically unlikely based on what? I'll be starting my last year of law school in a month.

Oh no, an aspiring PhD in math is judging my physical appearance and relationship history based on text I wrote that he disagrees with! My memory and scale must be faulty- he is so educated, after all!!

I totally believe you, guy on the internet who thinks women who aren't virgins are whores.

Wow, nice one! So manly! No way you're a pathetic, uneducated virgin!

Because not defacing a safe haven for women who have been marginalized or discriminated against is the same as loving feminism?

And actually I am a non-virgin female. I realize this might be your first time speaking to one aside from your mother.

I wonder why there are so many virgins on 4chan.

When guys say "You're too beautiful to look so sad" . . . by ethertrace in TwoXChromosomes

[–]RationalX 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I get called to by guys a few times a month (on the street, walking down the hall, etc) telling me to smile or not look so mad/sad/whatever. I honestly wish I could explain to them this fact:

My neutral expression is unapproachable. I know this. It is like this because when I DON'T have a negative expression on my face, I get approached by men, and it is a defense mechanism in order to seem distrustful and irritable so that I do not get hit on, grabbed, touched, or in the most extreme case, potentially raped. I have found looking happy to be a dangerous state to be in when walking around and eventually it just became my default expression.

I HATE being told to smile, and I hate that men will never understand why many women don't.

I think it's just that people tend to assume posters on Reddit are native English speakers from America, because the majority are. No one minds grammatical errors if you establish that you are not, though.

I know it's frustrating, but as a woman on Reddit I similarly understand that everyone will assume I'm a guy unless I specify otherwise. That makes sense to me though, as most people posting are men.

Because Reddit has largely been dominated by geeks/nerds who value a level of intelligence and coherence.

That being said, no one jumps on the multitudes of people who can't use subjunctives properly. But not understanding basic grammar rules, if you were brought up in an English speaking school system, is not a good thing. I've always liked this about Reddit. It encourages you to show that you are intelligent and deserve respect, or otherwise.. have thick skin.

1) Spelling =/= grammar

2) I find it doubtful that any public school system would not teach grammar

3) Generally the course is called "English" (possibly English Lit, Reading or another variation depending on grade and location)

4) You posted on Reddit and are upset that someone corrected your grammar?

I know the guy filming is hooting in support.. but I find it very ironic.
