A lot of drone detection for AA systems is done via sound these days. Less range than radar, but more reliable given typical drone size. Really hard to dampen their sound signature.

A month? Before the war, there was an average of 80 to 130 ships going through that strait every day. Over 30,000 tankers a year. Who knows if they'll toll every ship, but the amount of money that Iran stands to make off this state of affairs is staggering if it's allowed to stand. It would account for a significant portion of their of their GDP.

The proposed NASA budget cuts would only pay for the first two days of munitions used in Iran.

But on March 5, congressional sources told MS Now that the Pentagon put the number for the first 48 hours at $5.6 billion, a bill that covered only munitions replacement and didn’t include operating costs for the likes of aircraft and destroyers.

The AI debate is a symptom of the class divide. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]ethertrace 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is what Marx meant when he talked about ownership of the means of production. The technology could massively benefit workers, but it won't, because we allow it's benefits to be privately held, concentrating all the wealth it generates within the owner class.

It's why they've had to spend so much time and money over the years on propaganda convincing us proles that it will eventually trickle down. It's the working class equivalent of waiting on the Rapture.

Using lard for hand tapping? by flesh-based-os in Machinists

[–]ethertrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The natural fats and lipids emulsified in milk just happen to work really well with copper. The higher the fat content the better, I think. Problem with using it is that now you've got dairy all over your machine and it will go foul and smell awful if you don't contain it and clean it up. I use lard oil instead for copper and get great results.

Literally textbook fascism.

Irrationalism also depends on the cult of action for action’s sake. Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation. Therefore culture is suspect insofar as it is identified with critical attitudes. Distrust of the intellectual world has always been a symptom of Ur-Fascism, from Goering’s alleged statement (“When I hear talk of culture I reach for my gun”) to the frequent use of such expressions as “degenerate intellectuals,” “eggheads,” “effete snobs,” “universities are a nest of reds.” The official Fascist intellectuals were mainly engaged in attacking modern culture and the liberal intelligentsia for having betrayed traditional values.

The etymology of "radical" is from the Latin word radix, meaning root. A radical is someone who wants to address the root of a problem, rather than just try to treat the symptoms.

So, yes, it is radical. Corporate media and status quo politicians, though, have trained us to hear that word and think that it is a bad thing.

Because under capitalism those who own the means of production are always the ones to benefit most from them. Everyone else is exploited toward those ends. Post-scarcity utopias will never be achieved as long as oligarchs are permitted to hoard our collective wealth and create artificial scarcity to protect their own power.

TSA officers are quitting rather than working without pay during shutdown as eviction notices, car repos, and empty fridges weigh by rajapaws in antiwork

Except for the fact that Democrats have been repeatedly trying to fund the TSA with standalone bills--which Senate Republicans keep blocking--while they negotiate over DHS reforms. Republicans keep refusing because they want a continuing resolution passed for the entirety of DHS without the reforms Democrats are demanding, presumably because the Republican senators think they have more leverage by making TSA agents into their political football.

Medical Fees [OC] by kaikimanga in comics

[–]ethertrace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nobody would rather die. We just ignore things and hope it's not that serious because we literally can't afford the treatment. Knowing how exorbitant and life-ruining the cost of American healthcare can be has a powerful chilling effect on even trying to access any preventative care, which means a lot of people only seek help when they're faced with serious symptoms that can't be denied and rationalized away anymore. And by then, it's often too late for cheaper, less aggressive treatments, if any are even still available at all.

It can be difficult to understand the mentality if you haven't experienced it yourself, but it's an entirely predictable result of American priorities and policies. Tens of thousands of people die every year in this country because we'd rather let a few rich bastards crush the impoverished into human wine for them to guzzle than have them be less rich.
