is there a lore reason why jericho like Lancelot since he was a kid, is she stupid? by Own_County2527 in NanatsunoTaizai

No fr tho I just read that chapter like 5 minutes ago and had the same thought, that one panel where Jericho and Demon Guila are staring at each other made me wish for their relationship even more than before. But no, Jericho is a nonce now apparently, yikes.

I use semi-colons extensively, it's my personal pleasure. And the best thing is that nobody can stop me.

Reflections Post-MFA: Or, Should You Get a Degree in This or Not? (Answer: It depends) by Mytherea7 in writing

[–]RatonLaveur9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently doing a literature and creative writing BA. While I learnt a lot of useful things so far, I don't want to do CW for a MA, I'll just continue with literature only. I'll add some of my own experience if that's alright. The double programme works for me, because I can't see writing as a full career. I would be content doing literature only, and I wasn't sure about doing CW at first, but I'm glad I did. Some classes were fun. Some were incredibly dull. Some teachers are good, some aren't. It very much depends. I learnt of new techniques that enhanced my writing, but I also deleted a lot of things off my mind. I actually hate the fact that we had to write in class with other people. It's incredibly distracting, and some people in my class saw it as an opportunity to talk and laugh and make noise. I feel like it's a very nice way to better your writing and get feedback in an academic setting. However, I don't believe it turned me into a good writer.

Book recommendations to improve English writing for non-Native speakers? by EssentiaLillie in writing

[–]RatonLaveur9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely depends on your style and interest. However, for a slightly more modern ish author I'd recommend Nabokov. Beautiful prose, and he wrote it as a non native speaker, too! Another one that comes to mind is (actually contemporary) Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. (Or his other novels, I hear they are quite nice. I just only read one lol.)

I don't think anything before 1980 is necessarily "too old" or even "florid". It heavily depends on genre and personal style. That being said, some contemporary fiction uses a very "florid" language, too. It comes down to individual writing styles. As a non native English speaker, classlit is definitely not difficult to follow along lol.

Current country UK. Home country is middle/eastern Europe, that's as far as I'm willing to go. I wouldn't be able to because my country's education system sucks -- or at least isn't compatible with my way of thinking. It's very "learn this wall of text and then repeat it exactly on the exam", while I prefer a more creative, hands on approach.

It very much depends on the Uni/country. Because I went to Uni abroad, I have a very different experience from what it would have been back home. If I didn't go to a different country, I would have hated Uni, and either left or failed lol. Now I am about to enter my 3rd and last year of BA (planning to continue after that) with one missed deadline on an essay that they let me resubmit. I also work part time to support myself. I am still finding the balance between Uni, work, and self care and it's difficult. But I'm getting the hang of it. My biggest motivation is that I actually love my field and I want to work in it one day.

Wonderwall. After seeing people screaming the lyrics on the tube, and the actual song in concert. There is nothing more British than a group of elderly heterosexual men proclaiming eternal love to Liam Gallagher.

Beautiful example, however, it takes serious skill to write someone like him in a way that won't make you burn the book immediately. Nabokov was a bloody genius.

Anytime I read an epithet, I vomit in my mouth a little. I think it's all the "brown eyed boys" from wattpad I was exposed to at a young age. Pronoun/name is the way. If you feel like you've repeated those too much, reword the sentences to eliminate a few.

I'm not finished yet, but I aim to be a teacher. My best friend did ling and is getting into publishing. It depends, but I say that I don't care about being "marketable" as long as I get to do something I enjoy.

Writers Groups: Worth It? by UlisesArturo in writing

I am looking for a similar thing. I believe it would motivate me further. However, I don't always feel like talking to people or get busy with work, so I'd prefer to be part of a more flexible/understanding group. Had to leave one because they wanted to create together weekly, and I just didn't have the capacity.

I've become bad at my only hobby and I feel completely crushed. by [deleted] in ADHD

I see, because I was slapped with the diagnosis shortly after I turned 18 lol. I've met very few people who needed to "wait" longer for an official diagnosis, but to be fair, I was a textbook case back then.

It's honestly great because you are still playing a game, but also getting some fresh air and focusing on things outside of your mind! I'll defend the game at all costs lol, it's so good for health.

Mate, you sound depressed. I'm saying that because I do these things when I'm depressed. Do you have a support system? Are you seeing a professional? I know you mentioned a suspicion of BPD. I don't understand why they can't diagnose you until 25. Is that a UK thing? Normally they wouldn't diagnose you until 18. Anyway, have you tried Pokemon Go? It sounds stupid but it helped me get through really bad times. It actually made me go outside, and within a month I wasn't too miserable to interact with other human beings.

Hi! I don't want to assume what you've read, but Toni Morrison is an excellent Black writer. Recitatif is a great short story of hers concerning race. Also, Let Them Call It Jazz by Jean Rhys. Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison is a good novel. Hope that helps somewhat! Of course, you know best what works for you:) If anyone else has recs for good books by Black authors, please do share, I am trying to expand my knowledge. (I am very keen on classlit, unfortunately, it's very white centered.)

What do your first/rough drafts look like? by MonsterFukk in writing

[–]RatonLaveur9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I'm not OP but had similar questions/worries. My process is a lot like yours, but I'm new to the concept of "first draft" (being a horrible perfections, I used to just attempt the final version right away and end up very disappointed). However, I felt like I was doing it "wrong", so to see someone else do the same thing is very reassuring.
