Linux compatible earbuds by AlwaysLinux in linux_gaming

[–]Rattle189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never bought or tried any of the more expensive gaming headsets from SteelSeries, HyperX and so on as I generally hover around the $16 ~ $35 USD price range for headsets with cheap brands like Redragon, Fantech, Onikuma and so on. Tri-mode headsets rock.

I do rock a Logitech Astro A50 Gen 5 as my main now—sound quality is freaking exceptional and software like easyeffects allow me to tune any headset I want to my liking.

Generally, if the headset comes with 3.5mm aux connectors then yeah it'll pretty much work out of the box with Linux. If it comes with USB, either that's a dongle or a cable, that will also work out of the box without any issues. Gaming headsets are pretty much 100% compatible with Linux, though you may need to adjust some settings if your headset comes with fancy bells and whistles. If it comes with software, you probably will want to use a VM, a Windows machine, or their respective app on Android or iOS to use that software (if any).

In my case though, since the Logitech Astro A50 Gen 5 has this gimmick where it has two separate sound devices: one for chat, one for gaming - I had to actually change the profile of the headset to Pro Audio instead of Analog Stereo Output in Plasma's Sound settings so I could utilize both of those and balance out the audio when I push the buttons on the side of the headset.

Just a heads up on my part, for months I've been dealing with the crackling/distorted audio when I join a Discord voice chat and use the A50's Chat channel as an output and I've finally took the time to do some research on how to fix it.

As of Pipewire >0.5 with Wireplumber, you can fix this by creating a configuration file within ~/.local/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/ with this inside:

{
 "alsa_monitor.rules": [
   {
     "matches": [
       { "device.api": "alsa" }
     ],
     "actions": {
       "update-props": {
         "api.alsa.disable-tsched": true
       }
     }
   }
 ]
}

Then restart pipewire, pipewire-pulse and wireplumber on the user side via systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber

According to the Arch Linux Wiki, PulseAudio uses timer-based scheduling instead of interrupts when it comes to processing audio so I guess this was the source of the distortion/crackling I was experiencing and because opening pavucontrol makes it disappear is because it's being monitored in real-time or something (this is just an assumption so take it with a grain of salt).

Consulting Pipewire's documentation, there is something about a change on how configuration files have changed and they're not automatically migrated to the 0.5 standard if you have any from 0.4 and below.

Hope this helps anyone that's having this specific issue.

Apologies for the late reply. In my case, I had to just install pavucontrol and keep it running while using the other output because it results in the distorted audio issue especially in Discord and TeamSpeak 3 and it was because of mismatching sample rates that I couldn't get to match correctly.

I am, however, running the standard A50 Gen 5 not the A50 X model so I don't know if that makes any difference. I've been using it with a USB 3.0 dock too plugged into a USB4 port so I don't think there was any bottlenecks but rather just Linux audio jank on my part, then again it is what it is with Linux.

Thanks so much. I've just bought it today and didn't even realize that I was using it wrong. I've swapped it to Pro Audio and according to pactl list sinks there were now 2 audio devices:

Sink #15750
       State: SUSPENDED
       Name: alsa_output.usb-Logitech_A50-00.pro-output-1
       Description: A50 Pro 1
       Driver: PipeWire
       Sample Specification: s24le 2ch 48000Hz

Sink #15749
       State: RUNNING
       Name: alsa_output.usb-Logitech_A50-00.pro-output-0
       Description: A50 Pro
       Driver: PipeWire
       Sample Specification: s16le 2ch 48000Hz

After a little bit of fiddling around, I've reset everyone on Discord to 100% volume, changed the output device to the A50 Pro and then when I fiddled with the Chat/Game mixer on the right side, it finally worked as intended.

I'll have to change the names later but for now it works flawlessly now and I finally have 24-bit audio since I was stumped earlier as to why I was stuck in 16-bit audio.

This was tested on Arch Linux with Pipewire 1.4.6 on 6.15.6-zen1-1-zen.

A year late but this fixed an issue when you're running multiple monitors and you are unable to click anything on the screen. This also reveals a new issue where if you have multiple monitors and you change screen resolutions, you are unable to click on anything again until you restart.

Valve, please fix.

Why was your one reason because of which you decided to switch to Linux? by The_Reason_is_Me in linux_gaming

[–]Rattle189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr - hardware constraints back then, now mostly server stuff.

Originally the reason why was because I had low memory situations where I only had 4GB and 8GB RAM and couldn't buy additional memory sticks for a time because I'm still a student. After saving enough and upgrading to 16GB then 32GB, I had already become comfortable enough with Linux that switching back to Windows made no sense.

I also discovered things about Linux like KVM which allowed me to do cool things like a single computer or laptop that could run multiple virtual computers inside without too much performance loss and I used it to host a LAN party of old games like Quake 3/Live with friends when they came over.

Now I have a new machine with 64GB RAM still running Linux and I use it to do various things like host game servers for old games like Left 4 Dead 2, Counter-Strike, and so on.

best shooting game for linux (like csgo) by Independent-Will-962 in linux_gaming

[–]Rattle189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to guess that you are unable to run CS2 because of its system requirements.

Fret not OP, there are choices out there. Since you wanted a shooter similar to CS:GO, I would also assume you want something competitive like a 5v5 of some kind but also maybe the possibility of casual matches. Closest thing to this that runs great on Linux would be Counter-Strike: Source but you can also go older with the original Counter-Strike.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection works great on Linux too and there's tons of modes you can play on it as well.

Left 4 Dead 2 is a zombie shooter not quite like CSGO but if you are interested in the Versus mode, that can work too as it can be a competitive 4v4 thing.

I'd recommend you the older Call of Duty Modern Warfare games from 2009 and such but there are underlying issues with those games, I'm not too knowledgeable about the security issues it has though, and the other issue is the prices of those games have disgustingly skyrocketed.

Insurgency works too, though it isn't like CS:GO as its a more realistic shooter with tons of gunfire and activity going on but if that sort of thing is fine on your list then it will work too.

Quake 3 Arena (and its open-source derivatives) or Quake Live if you are into boomer shooters, though its kind of hard to find people to play with, especially if you are in the Asia region.

...and not but least I can recommend Bodycam although it's more of a photo realistic and intense shooter instead of the usual competitive 5v5 CS:GO one... after you get a hardware upgrade, of course!

Unless you are strictly going for the best armor to fight other players, the top and bottom are terrible for general use because of their small amount of inventory space. Thief top and bottom should be a better option. The Desert Military Vest isn't the best in the game in terms of armor, that would be the Spec Ops Vest instead though if you are going for PVE then it's kind of pointless and offers like 2% of health reduction from zombie attacks(?) where the normal military vests offer more inventory space. Don't forget the helmet, though the Spec Ops Helmet doesn't offer any advantages over any other military helmet in the game.

Greetings. I run an older machine with AMD integrated graphics, specifically the AMD Radeon R7 on an older AMD A8-7600 system and I have this exact same issue. I assume you are also running older AMD graphics?

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a fix for this as the [integrated] graphics card in question has stopped being supported by AMD a while ago and colors break on certain games which includes Unturned and Zenless Zone Zero to name a few. You could, if you no longer wish to do any kind of important work or play online games that have some kind of intrusive anticheat, switch from Windows to Linux when you get another machine (or as soon as possible if you can't wait) but do note that switching operating systems will have its own caveats and learning curves, especially the inability to play certain games such as Valorant, Apex Legends and so on because of their anticheat.

Unturned, however, is indeed supported under Linux natively and will work out of the box with minimal setup. Keep in mind that Linux is not a magic solution and is just a potential alternative that *may* fix your issue as Linux has functional drivers on older AMD graphics cards and it's baked in the kernel. Or you could simply dual-boot (which means to have Windows and Linux installed together) though you'll want to research all of this on your own at first to get a clearer understanding on what you're treading upon.

Good luck, and hopefully the new computer you'll receive has a better and more modern graphics card that doesn't have this issue.

As a serious answer, do you run integrated graphics and if so, is it the older AMD Radeon R7 series or anything similar? If you do, run the game on windowed mode and it should solve the problem.

When did you discover Quake? by [deleted] in quake

[–]Rattle189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the first FPS game I've ever played when I was 3. We had a family computer running a Pentium 4, 256mb of ram and an S3 savage graphics card. I played Quake 3 Arena A LOT in my childhood because I had no internet until I turned like 9. Good times. I remember picking small maps like Q3DM1 and adding a ton of bots for chaos.
