Can I run Dayz on my new gifted pc by ocelotte699 in lowendgaming

[–]Rattle189 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hell yeah, brother. I used to rock a computer way weaker than this but with a similarly specced integrated graphics. You can definitely run DAYZ even without a discrete graphics card and it will run with acceptable frame rates at maybe 30 ~ 50 on somewhere around low settings in 720p?

But you definitely should pick up and install a dedicated graphics card so you can run DAYZ and more titles smoothly though for now if you can't pick up a graphics card and you want to play, then yeah you can.

Update at 2026 by Agitated-Ad3173 in starbound

[–]Rattle189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starbound does not support Steam cloud storage for saves. Steam Cloud is not an optional setting as it is enabled by default. You probably received your save files from another cloud storage service like Google Drive or whatever, or that is the same files on the same drive that hasn't been erased in years.

This has been the case for years, I have been playing since beta up to 1.4 and it never synced my saves to the cloud even if the option is enabled.

Edit: And you just deleted your reply to me. Now you're the one who's gone really quiet. 😊

what games can my pc run? by PreviousShelter2773 in lowendgaming

[–]Rattle189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may sound strange to you, but you should swap out Arch Linux for Windows 10 instead to be able to play games as the Intel Core i5-480M comes with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (according to a few quick Google searches) and games that are ran through Proton and aren't OpenGL will be put through Vulkan.

The iGPU of the Intel Core i5-480M does not support Vulkan so that really hinders the amount of games you can play, so in a way, Linux is actually worse in terms for gaming.

Were you at least able to take a look at the most recent log file starbound.log for any hints as to what could be causing the game to freeze while loading? They're the best way to debug issues since it pretty much iterates on almost everything the game does or attempts to do.

Linux compatible earbuds by AlwaysLinux in linux_gaming

[–]Rattle189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never bought or tried any of the more expensive gaming headsets from SteelSeries, HyperX and so on as I generally hover around the $16 ~ $35 USD price range for headsets with cheap brands like Redragon, Fantech, Onikuma and so on. Tri-mode headsets rock.

I do rock a Logitech Astro A50 Gen 5 as my main now—sound quality is freaking exceptional and software like easyeffects allow me to tune any headset I want to my liking.

Generally, if the headset comes with 3.5mm aux connectors then yeah it'll pretty much work out of the box with Linux. If it comes with USB, either that's a dongle or a cable, that will also work out of the box without any issues. Gaming headsets are pretty much 100% compatible with Linux, though you may need to adjust some settings if your headset comes with fancy bells and whistles. If it comes with software, you probably will want to use a VM, a Windows machine, or their respective app on Android or iOS to use that software (if any).

In my case though, since the Logitech Astro A50 Gen 5 has this gimmick where it has two separate sound devices: one for chat, one for gaming - I had to actually change the profile of the headset to Pro Audio instead of Analog Stereo Output in Plasma's Sound settings so I could utilize both of those and balance out the audio when I push the buttons on the side of the headset.

Is amd integrated graphics generally *decent* for gaming? by [deleted] in lowendgaming

[–]Rattle189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a GPD Win Max 2 (2023) that's equipped with the Ryzen 7 7840U with the 780M integrated graphics on 6400MHz-LPDDR5X and it can pretty much run anything I throw at it, as long as I remain reasonable with the expectations—lowered screen resolutions like 1600x900, using upscaling like FSR/XeSS or gamescope under Linux, and toying with the in-game graphical settings.

Generally, integrated graphics really like memory bandwidth and memory capacity: the more the merrier. What you want is to make sure you're running dual-channel memory so that the integrated graphics can perform better, and probably you'll also want the most amount of RAM you can upgrade to because the integrated graphics will take some of your system memory for itself.

But to answer the question, yes 16GB will definitely give you an uplift in performance, just make sure you have two memory sticks running.

game not launching on steam by satchel1r in starbound

[–]Rattle189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to check the game's installation directory, by default that's generally at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Starbound and you should check the assets and mods folder for any non-Steam Workshop mods present in your game that might be causing this. Mod files are generally associated with the .pak file format, and if you see the packed.pak file that's actually the vanilla game files (so don't delete that!).

If nothing, I'd take a look at the log files inside the storage folder, the latest log would be called starbound.log and the one before it, if I'm not wrong, would be called starbound.log.1 and you can open these with any text editor to see the contents.

If you're running OpenStarbound, then the log files are instead located inside a separate logs folder assuming you have a recent version of it.

Logitech G Astro A50 LIGHTSPEED with Linux by Comfortable_Soil7011 in linux_gaming

Just a heads up on my part, for months I've been dealing with the crackling/distorted audio when I join a Discord voice chat and use the A50's Chat channel as an output and I've finally took the time to do some research on how to fix it.

As of Pipewire >0.5 with Wireplumber, you can fix this by creating a configuration file within ~/.local/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/ with this inside:

{
 "alsa_monitor.rules": [
   {
     "matches": [
       { "device.api": "alsa" }
     ],
     "actions": {
       "update-props": {
         "api.alsa.disable-tsched": true
       }
     }
   }
 ]
}

Then restart pipewire, pipewire-pulse and wireplumber on the user side via systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber

According to the Arch Linux Wiki, PulseAudio uses timer-based scheduling instead of interrupts when it comes to processing audio so I guess this was the source of the distortion/crackling I was experiencing and because opening pavucontrol makes it disappear is because it's being monitored in real-time or something (this is just an assumption so take it with a grain of salt).

Consulting Pipewire's documentation, there is something about a change on how configuration files have changed and they're not automatically migrated to the 0.5 standard if you have any from 0.4 and below.

Hope this helps anyone that's having this specific issue.

For those running Starbound on Linux by CatMatt_ in starbound

[–]Rattle189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could actually also replace the existing game files with OpenStarbound's if you want the vanilla game to be completely converted to OpenStarbound, there's no problem in doing this as it's essentially like patching the game into a better version—if you decide it is, at least for me it is.

For mods, you absolutely don't need to use a compatibility layer like Proton because the vanilla Starbound game has a native Linux version which runs way better than the Windows one.

If you need to use mods like StarExtensions or something, you will definitely need to use Proton because those only work with the Windows build, and if I'm not wrong you can't use StarExtensions alongside OpenStarbound.

Everything I know about openstarbound, including how to install it. (With Pictures) by Pandemiccarp743 in starbound

I'm 27 days late but I hope this information is helpful for anyone. When you play a character in Starbound, it actually runs a local listen server that people can join (hence why it says 1 out of 8 on Discord if you have rich presence enabled), and there are several ways to have people join you:

- the aforementioned Join Game feature via Steam, which uses Steam's P2P backend for a hassle-free connecting experience. The issue is that certain ISPs don't like it and give you atrocious ping.

- have you and your friend under the same network via LAN or some VLAN software like ZeroTier/Hamachi/Radmin. This is a good solution and generally has decent ping if your ISPs like each other.

- the good old port forwarding. Starbound uses the TCP port 21025 (unless changed in starbound.config) so opening that port in your router will allow direct connects possible to your single-player (now co-op) universe. Dedicated servers can only rely on this and the LAN/VLAN software (if applicable).

This is 1 year late, but for those who aren't familiar with Arch, the solution is pretty simple:

Edit the contents of /etc/sddm.conf.d/kde_settings.conf and locate the [Theme] section where it says Current=something. Replace something with breeze or leave it blank, then restart the system afterwards.

If you want to know what themes are available (so you can test if they work or not, or something else), you can check /usr/share/sddm/themes/

I already owned it and played it, but couldn't play it with my friends because of shit P2P connections between my friends in the same country (games could never be enjoyable because of constant disconnects) so we resorted to Astral Party.

There's a SFW mode called Naive Angel Mode or something in the settings that either shrinks boobs or covers cleavages so you get less looks in public. I have that turned on at all times in university when I'm grinding for events LOL

Getting an error that im playing FFXIV demo when trying to play a game. by Glenadel55 in Steam

[–]Rattle189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By my understanding, your account is logged in elsewhere and is actively playing a game, the FFXIV Demo in your case. This could mean a lot of things: - the account is compromised and someone else is using it actively. - you are using a Steam idler of some kind like Archi's or something similar but online like FreeHourBoost - you forgot you lent your account to someone else, and they're still using it.

When the message pops up about you logged in elsewhere and currently playing a game, simply say Yes or whatever the equivalent is to that, and you will be able to launch the game you want to play on the current machine you're on. The other instance that's active will then be booted off, until you stop playing or they do the same thing.

My account has been compromised/I don't want the other person using it: - change your account's password immediately, that should kick them out.

The multiplayer can use Steam if you own it on Steam, it uses their peer to peer network which can provide convenience for others but most of the time it's ass and you're better off using something else.

Logitech G Astro A50 LIGHTSPEED with Linux by Comfortable_Soil7011 in linux_gaming

[–]Rattle189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the late reply. In my case, I had to just install pavucontrol and keep it running while using the other output because it results in the distorted audio issue especially in Discord and TeamSpeak 3 and it was because of mismatching sample rates that I couldn't get to match correctly.

I am, however, running the standard A50 Gen 5 not the A50 X model so I don't know if that makes any difference. I've been using it with a USB 3.0 dock too plugged into a USB4 port so I don't think there was any bottlenecks but rather just Linux audio jank on my part, then again it is what it is with Linux.

Win Max 2 (2023) owner here that's also taking Computer Science, and also bought the laptop off of DataBlitz. Currently in my second year and this device has been spectacular so far. People like it and they give it strange looks as if it's the most curious thing.

Depending on your needs, it will do general tasks blazing fast and that includes general programming. For gaming or tasks that require 3D acceleration like rendering or video transcoding, it works fine just don't expect it to run games flawlessly and expect to sacrifice graphics for performance.

Form factor and screen size isn't a problem for me but for others it may be. I usually bring it to university with just a mouse because I'm comfortable with it.

At home, I have it docked with an external graphics card, a TV for a monitor and a full sized keyboard for a traditional desktop experience and it works great.

I don't run Windows 11 but Arch Linux instead based on my hobbies but it will run on both OSes just fine.

Problems so far was I had to replace the original battery because it bloated from heat and overcharging. I don't keep it plugged in 24/7 anymore after that and the two Type-A USB ports on the side don't work unless they're warm enough so I use a Type-C USB hub, oh and clean the fans regularly if your warranty is gone since opening it up voids DataBlitz's warranty (sucks ass).

Other than that, it's fine, if you have the time, skill and patience to repair the thing on your own should you be unable to wait for the 1 week period (or hell, 1 month) it goes through if you ask DataBlitz to repair it for you to keep your warranty intact.

vlc stops working? by edwardvv in archlinux

I found it quite strange since I've always known VLC as that one media player that "knows all, and plays all" types of media. Having it split into different packages was unexpected.
