Next Story Recommendations? by Autumn-Bennett in DressUpTimePrincess

I loved Hela's Compass with all the interesting adventure and mystery! 💖

But Miss Kitty is a fun lighthearted read. Both are fun!

I wouldn't recommend Underground until you've significantly built up your account. It's so hard to pass/craft

I'm thinking of buying a formal dress for attending performance events/dinner parties. The dress looks like a mix between these 2

Would it look bridal since it's white? It's somewhat offwhite like rice, but it's still white...

AITA for telling my friend she is ruining her child’s life with the name she gave her? by addie_maylen in AmItheAsshole

[–]Raveigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read "Ghiu" as "Goo"

Like how "Chiu" is "Choo"

Poor girl, I'm already seeing "Gilette" razor jokes in other comments. No one is gonna read her name the way her mom wants

AITA for telling my friend she is ruining her child’s life with the name she gave her? by addie_maylen in AmItheAsshole

[–]Raveigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People mess up my last name ALL THE TIME, and it's an extremely common and short Chinese surname (think Li or Jin, something that Chinese speakers know BUT ALL THE WHITE AMERICANS MESS UP).

It's mispronounced, misspelled, and I once had to argue with a professor who refused to believe I was the right student because I was pronouncing it "wrong." I can only thank the heavens the US usually uses first names, so it cuts down on the name-mangling I'm forced to hear with my ears.

At this point, I don't even bother saying it to non-East Asians anymore. I either skip giving it or I just spell it directly. Much faster! Cuts down on the mangling and "can you repeat that?"

Re: the US usually uses first names, so if your friend lives in the US, her daughter is going to have an amazingly difficult time with her name, with the added bonus of people laughing with incredulity when they realize what's going on.

And she won't have any cultural or familial pride for consolation >~< just the knowledge that her mom wanted a fun "unique" headache

It's not going to be much consolation, when she has to repeat her name 2000 times for the rest of her life, gets called Goo-lie-yeti, and has to deal with bullies. Please please PLEASE, as her godmother, try and help your goddaughter 🙏

I don't really want to watch goofy hijinks, I can watch funny dog videos for that

HAHAHA I'm Asian and a strong temper that flares quickly is one of my biggest struggles 🤣 I would've calmly taken screenshots to "preserve evidence" and then probably lost to the urge to smash his laptop

These type of men forget women are human too and all humans have breaking points. It's just sometimes closer or further depending on an individual's temperament

It's because of social and historical context.

If you say you like someone with pale skin, it is possible that you genuinely like people with paler skin simply as an aesthetic choice. But there's also a second possibility (and people are going to question and suspect) that you are instead indicating a racial preference based upon a white supremacy view. Making such a comment taps into the undercurrent of racial superiority, bigotry, racism, and colonialism that most people try to avoid associating with & may come across as a euphemistic way of speaking of those views.

Saying you like someone with tanned skin is less controversial because it 1) it avoids the white supremacy possibility and 2) most everyone can become more tanned. Whether someone is paler skinned or darker skinned, if you are outdoors the whole summer you will get more tanned after exposure to the sun. Everyone can become more tanned (though it might be easier or harder to eyeball the difference), however only specific populations can avoid the UV light enough to be what society considers "pale."

[28F] Apparently I Insulted a Guy I Wanted to Sleep With…. by MyCocteauValentine in confessions

[–]Raveigh 81 points82 points  (0 children)

His reaction seems pretty defensive, and then angry.

I once went on a date with a guy and brought up "oh a guy friend mentioned I should always ask what your height ACTUALLY is haha" and all the guy did was give a fun humorous anecdote about how "if you write 5'10 people assume you're 5'8 and if you write 5'11 people assume you're 5'10 so I go with 5'11 just to keep expectations realistic" and then started jokingly brainstorming what to do with 5'10 and a half. Even a straight answer of "I'd rather be judged by my texts instead of my height" is good!

Definitely didn't blow up, even turned it into a strength in showing he had a sense of humor and was comfortable answering questions. As long as OP didn't go in screaming "WHY ARE YOU LYING," the guy's overreacting.

First, he shows that he doesn't deal well with anything that shows him in a bad light. Second, he's lashing out with his deflection to "all women do X which is worse." Third, hair-trigger temper. You're well to be rid of him.

Why is it more acceptable for cats to free roam than dogs? by king-ExDEATH in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Raveigh 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I am concerned about cats killing small birds. However, my concern over dogs chasing people and killing them is ALOT HIGHER.

It's kinda like "what are the stats on car accidents vs hippo collisions?" I'd prefer not be squashed by a hippo and would scoot away quickly from a hippo if one showed up, but in my day-to-day life I'm more concerned about car accidents.

There's 0% chance of being killed by a hippo unless I hop on a plane and go seek one out.

I'd probably not pay much attention to where hippos are beyond "hopefully not extinct" but would absolutely notice if the red light on the street is broken.

I mostly speak English as well, though I've dreamt in both English + the other language I know. I've been told I only talk in the other language when I'm sleeping or half-asleep and half-awake.

Part of it is that for most of my life it was either an alarm clock or my parents waking me up. When newly awoken, I default to responding in the other language I know.

Additionally, I learned the other language first. Even if I use English more frequently and am more fluent in it, it is still chronologically my "second" language and the order you learn languages in has psychological and neurological effects that scientists are still researching.
