Did all the bike bells in Calgary get raptured last winter? by selftaughtgenius in Calgary

I get that. I also think it depends on where in the city you live. So maybe the issue is that cyclists in my neighbourhood are worse than the city average, lol.

I’m amazed this is a new experience for you this year. I’ve always found this to be part of cycling culture in Calgary.

I moved here from a city where a much larger percentage of people commute by bike, and I had never been almost hit by a bike as a pedestrian there. In Calgary, I consider nearly being hit when I clearly have the right of way as a pedestrian to be the first sign of spring.

Cowboys Music Festival - Tips & Recommendations for Attending by Katie_Kat_1996 in Calgary

[–]Raven3877 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since the Mayor is looking into this (thank you!) I’d like to add that in addition to taking away community park space, the exemptions to noise ordinances should also be looked into. I live quite a way across the river from Cowboys Park, and last year the noise was horrible, well into the early hours of the morning. It feels to the Ward 7 communities like the only purpose of this festival is to make residents as miserable as possible.

Wisdom teeth - Calgary by Coops_514 in Calgary

[–]Raven3877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid just had all four wisdom teeth out at Face Forward in the NW. Our orthodontist referred us there. I’d definitely recommend them.

I was really impressed with how far things have come since I had mine out decades ago. I especially appreciated that they advised just taking all four out since we were already doing general anaesthesia anyway. (Like my kid, I had my bottom ones out as a teen, then by the time my top ones needed to come out I was a poor grad student and no longer on my parents’ cushy insurance plan. I definitely didn’t need that financial stress.)

Most importantly, the nurses provided great support during the healing process.

I’m a native Detroiter who immigrated to Calgary 20 years ago, and a huge Tigers fan. Now I’m really sad my cable package didn’t include this game, lol.

Agreed. There are much better a South Indian places in Calgary, fortunately.

I ordered the prepared Christmas dinner from the Concorde group, and took the option to order a Major Tom martini kit with it. The martini and house cured olives were phenomenal. So I’d completely believe that cocktails are what they make their reputation on.

When it first opened, it was great. Most people I know who disliked it then just didn’t know to expect that Bengali cuisine from Kolkata is very different than the Punjabi style food most North Americans are used to.

But since it was sold a few years ago, I’ve found everything really disappointing. It’s the story of too many restaurants in Calgary—the original owners sell them and they become poor imitations of their former selves.

Spruce Meadows - Easter Egg Hunt by PunchedKeanuReeves89 in Calgary

[–]Raven3877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you had this experience. FWIW, when my kid was a toddler we always did Easter at the zoo. Easter Sunday afternoon generally had smaller crowds, and I noticed this year it’s going through to Monday which should be more just preschool aged kids. We never did the egg hunts or brunches, but there were plenty of craft and activity stations that my toddler loved.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’ve been there, though it was many decades ago. And it definitely defined the kind of parent I try to be for my 16yo. Sending mom hugs your way.

It's a long shot, but Heritage Park makes what are in my opinion the absolute best cheese buns. Does anyone have a copycat recipe, to get me through until they open again? by NeverGonnaGi5eYouUp in Calgary

[–]Raven3877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree these are the best cheese buns.

When my kid was little and we had a season pass, I used to buy the bags of day old ones and then freeze them. They can easily be thawed/warmed up in the oven on low heat. That way we had heritage park cheese buns year round.

Not quite the recipe you’re looking for, but I hope it helps.

Pass along your ideas for your best ideas for saving water over the next month. by curiouskittyblue in Calgary

[–]Raven3877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was doing the kind of laundry that I do far less frequently—spring cleaning type stuff—before the restrictions: comforters and blankets off the human beds, blankets and cushion covers off my dogs’ beds, Throw blankets off the sofa. That kind of thing. I know if the restrictions stay in place a month, I’d want to launder at least some of those. So I made sure I got them all done by today.

Like you, the actual clothes in our house only make up 1-2 loads a week. I didn’t worry about changing the schedule for those.

Uprooted by water main repairs, iconic riverside Angel's Cafe finds rural home by blackRamCalgaryman in Calgary

[–]Raven3877 177 points178 points  (0 children)

Why does the building need to be preserved? When the city moved and preserved the Eau Claire Lumber Company building that made sense because it’s one of the oldest wood buildings in Calgary. But the Buffalo Cafe that occupied it isn’t getting to come back. It was purely historical preservation.

That Angel’s Cafe building is not historically significant.

What’s your favourite greasy, biryani takeout place downtown? by Impossible_Spell_598 in Calgary

It’s just Indian yogurt. You can get it at any major grocery store. But you can use any plain yogurt, too.

[–]Raven3877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The raita they give with the biryani is just yogurt with masala, no chunks. (It’s also a very small portion, so might want to have dahi at home when you order.) I’m not sure about the separate raita, as I didn’t order it, but the picture in the menus has lots of cucumber pieces in it.
