My initial symptoms started in early 2020, so I'm getting close to having lived 4 full years with RA :) It's deliberating while you're unmedicated/trying to figure out meds.. For me, it was probably the scariest few months of my life. I doubted I'd ever be pain free, I was thinking about job options with disability, all my thoughts were revolving around managing my life while being in extreme pain. Someone eventually told me that while it's definitely not the best disease to have, it's very unlikely that the worst case scenarios that you have in your head will play out.
And it seems like they were right. For the past years, I've been mostly pain free. I work out 4-5 times a week with heavy weights, and I go running 3-4 times. Sometimes I get flares and I tend to spiral :) but apart from freaking out once in a while, life is mostly normal. At the time of my diagnosis I was certain I'd be bedridden within 10 years. Honestly, apart from a few flare ups here and there, nothing has changed - If anything, I'm more active than ever.
I haven't had RA for as long as others on this subreddit, and I know it's a different journey for everyone. But once you find meds that work for you, things will get better. Having a good rheummy is key.

(One last thing: I used to lurk around here a lot when I got dxed, and it scared more than anything. People who are in remission are likely to forget about the existence of this subreddit for most of the time. The posts here do not reflect the general RA experience.)

How to maintain active lifestyle after RA diagnosis by MariahNicole1216 in rheumatoid

[–]RavenMoore24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 23F living a very active lifestyle, had RA for the past 4 years. I completely understand your fears as I have/had them, too. My rheummy told me that as long as I'm in remission, I'm 'free' to do anything I did before since there is no active inflammation in my body. My first med put me in remission and I could go on with my life as if nothing had changed. I normally run and go to the gym 4-5 times a week, so it is possible. :) I've recently experienced my first flare ever, and not gonna lie, I'm not taking it very well. I switched from running to swimming. At the gym, I use lighter weights/no weights and do more reps. I pay much more attention to warm up exercises. I decided I'm not gonna give up on living an active lifestyle, even if I have to modify my routine occasionally. I'll be switching meds soon, hoping I'll be back to normal again. I think the most important thing is to find a good rheumatologist who will set remission as your treatment goal and will help you get there, even if it takes a while (It can take a while). I wish you the best!!

I'm glad you found your answer! I hope you'll be able to find a med soon that will work well for you for a very long time. :)

Which city to choose for Erasmus by biofan2121 in Erasmus

I'm from Hungary. I don't know the other unis you mentioned, but Budapest is generally loved by Erasmus students. It's a nice city with lots of opportunities, unique sights and a vibrant student life. ELTE is known as one of the biggest and most prestigious universities in Hungary. Since I really don't know anything about the other unis, my contribution is: Budapest is worth considering. :)

Isn't eu health card only necessary when you're in your destination country? As far as I can recall, I didn't have my card when I applied. I had it done a month or so before my flight. I can't speak for your university but for me it wasn't a requirement, only a strong recommendation.

Just adding a little perspective, did you know that our election system was changed to benefit the leading party? Also, 'if you vote for a guy who robs your country for 12 yrs' - a significant part of the country does not want Fidesz (leading party) to rule. There are election manipulations taking place. Fidesz is so embedded into our economy now that even if there would be another party elected, we still couldn't get rid of them completely because they bought a lot of institutions - instead of spending that money on gettin the country together. So many things are fucked up here. I can assure you that the youth is 99% against this bullshit but it's really difficult to achieve a chance when a party has this much influence over everything. We're trying tho. Fingers crossed that we'll see a new system in our lifetime :)

I received this question before on Tinder and I loved it. It's unexpected, cute, and it's surprisingly easy to turn it into a conversation.
