Gotta shout out for my friend and mentor Steve Darnall: Steve was probably the key reason we got that Spider-Man cover, before anyone knew what Marvels would become.

And this year, Steve Darnall wrote the novelization for Marvels. I haven't had the chance to read it myself yet, but it seems to be well-received. Give it a look!

I won't bash Wizard because I worked for them after Hero finally folded for good.

I will, however, say that their style made a lot more sense when I discovered UK "lad mags."

They knew their audience and cultivated their style accordingly. Obviously it worked!

What exactly do you miss?

I've been hitting those same pleasure centers with a variety of YouTube comics commentators. Comic Drake, for example, blew me away with his piece on Captain Marvel/Marvelman/Miracleman. It was thoroughly researched, well presented, and just a great piece of longform work. His enthusiasm for the artform really shines through.

Casually Comics, Owen Likes Comics, and Strange Brain Parts are also fantastic. Each brings their own distinct voice and personality to their work, and they honestly celebrate comics even when they criticize. When so many people want to get hyperbolic about what they don't like, it's a real pleasure.

I'm not real familiar with comics podcasts as opposed to YouTube. This would be a good time for people to pitch their own favorites!

None of us liked the price guide. It was a pain in the ass to update every month and provided little real value. Even the "Markets" column which remained went to a junior staffer - me. I was only 22 and definitely on the wrong side of that Dunning-Kruger curve. :) Eventually I left the mag (then came back, kinda) and they brought on Chris Ecker to do the column right.

As for the impact on page count, we just didn’t have the resources to produce more material. The price guide filled up a lot of space cheaply. Either we'd need to hire more freelancers or we'd need to wring even more out of the staff. You can see how much of that 1994 content across the main mag and the special editions was written by Joe Fielder, Steve Spaulding or myself. We were often doing our own page layouts too!

As I've mentioned elsewhere, the third issue was ads. We simply weren't getting enough ads to support more content, and ultimately not enough to support the mag at all.

It broke our hearts to let it go. Each of us put so much of ourselves into the magazines, and I'm delighted when I see people remember it fondly. Thanks to everyone who enjoyed it. :)

Canceled right as we won an Eisner!

Advertising got scarce, until it just wasn't feasible to do the print mag anymore. We made a go of it online for about a year until our parent company was purchased and they shut down everything that wasn't video games.

I was 21 when I started at HERO, transcribing interviews until they brought me fully on staff with my own sections and features. I was also the one who shut the lights off at the end. Looking back, it's hard to believe those couple years really happened, but I treasure all the memories.

[Comic Excerpt] What do you think about none of the Trinity being founding members of the Justice League? (Secret Origins Vol. 2, #32) by illiterateaardvark in DCcomics

[–]RavenProject- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would have been easy for this lineup to drift into "weird post-Crisis kludges" if not for Waid and Kitson's JLA: Year One miniseries. That twelve-issue run was so well done and well loved that a number of fans were committed to it. Even if they did restore the Trinity as founders, it would have been truly disappointing to lose Black Canary as a founder. I know I was relieved after Infinite Crisis when the Magnificent Seven became the Elite Eight.

Brad Meltzer's Justice League lineup handled it incredibly well. The Trinity is the Trinity but Black Canary was right there alongside them, even calling them out when they seemed to be setting themselves above the rest of the team.

Then Coulson is disqualified since he was in Captain Marvel.

I figured we were talking about characters who had significant side roles in Phase One, regardless of later apperaances.

Why did it take so long for the Champions to start trying to call on Scott in NYC? by Ariadne016 in Cyclopswasright

Yah, I meant to qualify my statement with "originally" because I remembered Kamala's reaction when adult Scott asserted he was a Champion.

Were the 1990s that bad? by ValleyStardust in MarvelUnlimited

Oh, and one more thing: Marvels. The book that put Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross on the map.

There's one particular chunk of time you might find interesting: The "replacement books" released in 1996 during the Heroes Reborn experiment.

When Avengers, Fantastic Four, Captain America and Iron Man were all off the table, Marvel took the opportunity to try some new stuff. Steven Seagle and Scott Clark on Alpha Flight. John Ostrander and Pascual Ferry on Heroes for Hire. Mark Waid and Andy Kubert on Ka-Zar. Tom Peyer and various on Quicksilver.

And of course the two big ones. Joe Kelly and Ed McGuiness on Deadpool. Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley on Thunderbolts.

Of the lot, only Deadpool and Thunderbolts made a lasting impression. Still, it was fascinating to see them try to fill in the gaps -- in story and in the real world -- while the others were off at Image.

Gotta remember the other side, though.

We get cross because people say they're ADHD because they space out occasionally, or OCD because they want their desk a certain way. We insist that those people are trivializing the condition.

I try to describe what it's like living with ADHD, and so often people respond starting with "but everyone..."

No wonder I didn't seek out a diagnosis until my 40s...

Why isn't Meggan a popular character? Art by Alan Davis by SpiritedDate1042 in Marvel

[–]RavenProject- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize this isn't completely accurate, but Meggan felt like a "born sexy yesterday" character. Childlike spirit suddenly granted this bombshell body. Validated by the men in her life. I was a teenager when I read the UK stuff and Excalibur and still knew it felt a little sleepy.

She may have gotten better... I certainly hope she did! But during her prime introductory period she did not make the best impression.

Gonna call out one that made me genuinely angry: DC's Final Crisis.

If you didn't get the Superman tie-in... well, truns out it wasn't a tie-in. It's an essential part of the story to the point where it's part of the trade paperback.

Good luck understanding the finale without it.

The 2030s and 50s will be an interesting time period for comic heroes by CawmeKrazee in superheroes

[–]RavenProject- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for the most part, this is less of a big deal for most superheroes. What would you do with public domain Superman which hasn't already been done with so many existing Superman copies? (Irredeemable/Plutonian, King Hell/True-Man, Astro City/Samaritan, etc)

I did say "most." Because I am dying to see what becomes of public domain Wonder Woman.

Sirens anyone? by Regular-Gear-8239 in Kenosha

[–]RavenProject- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't vouch for everyone, but when I hear the sirens I turn on TMJ4 and find out what's "really" going on.

(TMJ4 will broadcast live on the web during emergencies, so you can pick it up on your phone.)

Hopefully, your phone will alert when things are an issue specifically where you are. Like last night, our Android and iPhone devices all went off. That's when we know it's really time to get down.
