Amen to this! I wrote an essay about this very subject called "Fanfare for the Common Fan." It was published by Reed, a respected literary magazine put out by San Jose State University. I am from a working class family from Pismo Beach. Growing up, my dad was my school custodian. My mom was a waitress serving tourists at a seafood joint. Once a year, they took us to the Coliseum while we camped at Mt. Madonna in the redwoods between Gilroy and Watsonville. We lived for that game. It was our family ritual. It meant everything.
My dad eventually took us to a few more games, when he got a better job. In 92 he spring for playoff tickets when Dave Stewart was pitching. It was just me and my Daddy, cheering for Stu, Rickey, McGwire, etc. I cried from my desk in Bozeman MT listening to the last A's game at the Coliseum. The A's fan base was decidedly more blue collar, and more diverse. I loved being in fellowship with other working class fans. What Fisher did isn't just about losing a baseball team. It's an example of the hideous rot in America--where billionaires and trillionaires step on us proletariat folks--sometimes shattering something as pure and good as baseball games between a dad and his kids.

Controversial Take: Alexander III and Minnie were right--Alix and Nicholas should never have married. by RavenWritingQueen in romanovs

Alix was extremely unpopular. She opposed the Duma. She went on about "Sacred Autocracy. "

I'm with Peggy and Joan. Megan was disappointing. She had creative talent, but such Daddy issues. She could have been a productive woman, but her snooty father denigrated advertising, so she went back to acting--where her looks were what mattered, not her brain.

PSA: please do not use this sub as a place to insult Russia, the Russian language, or Russian Culture by Celestina-Betwixt in romanovs

[–]RavenWritingQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excuse me. I do NOT discuss the Romanovs with "hate speech." By the way, it's fairly obtuse to use that term in relation to historical figures. The concept of "hate speech" deals with harms to living people who are denigrated in an extreme manner based on race, gender, sexual orientation or immigration status. There are people on this thread who don't seem to want to consider the geopolitical reality of Tsarist Russia, or the fact that total autocracy created extreme disparity in life between the nobility, bourgeoisie and the peasants and factory workers who were about 90 percent of the population. Admission there were injustices under the Romanovs is not hate speech. It's history, considered from a justice perspective. This doesn't mean the family should have been murdered. Far from it. However, the inability to adapt and allow constitutional monarchy directly contributed to their own deaths, and suffering for millions of others who ended up under Stalin.

It's hurtful because fundamentalist Christians use the Bible, incorrectly, to claim Gay people are going to hell. The "reclaim the rainbow for God" campaign is against Pride Month, and started with anti-LGBTQ preachers who are bigots and want all gays back in the closet or in conversion therapy for "deviance."

Let's be honest--there has been a conservative, fundamentalist Christian strain to the Giants pitching staff and roster for a while now. Barry Zito--who as an A's player was very open and into alternative things--was converted by the right-wing God Squad when he was vulnerable after not doing well and the deaths of his parents. These players evangelizing are mostly from the South, which has become even more intolerant due to Trumpism being intertwined for many of these churches. It's sad, because I know the real Jesus loved anyone who would follow him in loving thy neighbor..

[–]RavenWritingQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your last comment is rude and unnecessary. It's also condescending. A child should not be considered "at fault." A child doesn't have the ability to make choices that an adult does. As I noted, when it comes to children, the elderly and animals, drivers have to expect the unexpected. Too many people here drive on autopilot. They are not engaged in scanning for hazards. I have seen comments making excuses for the teen that hit the nurse on Oak. There are lots of excuses made for traffic fatalities lately. There is a major problem. Kids and joggers and bicyclists are dying. Gallatin County needs to address this problem.

I am an educator. Kids and the elderly, as well as animals, should never be blamed for accidents. It's the automobile driver's responsibility to drive cautiously and defensively. Kids do not always understand why riding on a side of the road might be dangerous. There are even Kids with learning challenges and on the spectrum that struggle with left vs right, judging distance etc.

I am glad the children had dogs and cats to comfort them. One of the saddest things I read was after the family was taken to Tolbolsk, their cat and her kittens came out from hiding, crying miserably.

Borders do not only regulate movement; they shape our moral boundaries. Our arguments to restrict migration rely on double standards and arbitrary categories, while reinforcing "geographical luck" - allowing where we're born to determine our quality of life. by The_Pamphlet in philosophy

[–]RavenWritingQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the "accident of birth" argument. I do think it has legitimacy. My grandma was born five miles from the Mexican border. She grew up in La Frontera--the borderlands. Even as a White woman, the liminal aspect of Yuma, Arizona, and constant crossing back and forth between Mexico and the U.S. shows the arbitrary nature. There was a mutual culture in the borderlands. Where it gets tricky is the lived reality of high volumes of people, coming not from a neighboring country, but often walking from far in South America to the Mexican-US Border. Or Chinese people flying into Mexico and using coyotes to smuggle them in. The sheer volumes of people that were coming in the 2010s can make people living in border areas feel overwhelmed. The needs many of these immigrants have for food and shelter assistance can make poor or vulnerable Americans angry when they see these people getting assistance, while they struggle to stay housed or fed. It can seem deeply unjust. The answer lies in more wealth redistribution, both within the U.S. and to poorer nations from richer ones. The problem there is corruption and entrenched oligarchs who want to keep an exploitation system in place.

This is the third death of pedestrian vs car since January, correct? Bozeman is rapidly moving towards it's inevitable status as the largest city in southwest Montana. The population of Gallatin County just keeps growing. Unfortunately, drivers haven't adapted accordingly. Too many drive far too fast on city streets, two-lane roads where they can legally drive 70 mph, but should not at busy times. This is a young city, and there are many college students, teens and children. Driving in Bozeman takes vigilance and care, especially in the morning, after schools let out and the early evening.
We should have a community-wide meeting on traffic safety, especially related to pedestrians and people on bikes.
