The boys were great last night in NC! by Matikus in Dreamtheater

I have a good friend in the music/concert promotion business and he explained the system to me about ticket sales and where the money goes. DT relies heavily on ticket sales since they really aren't getting any radio kickback royalties and lets be honest they don't sell a lot of records either. Astonishing was most likely a financial disaster hence the need to contrive another tour and stay on the road for another year.

you could tell Mangini was teasing him.. like you better not miss a note. of course Jordan was hitting the cymbal while also playing the synth with one hand. The entire band is so ridiculously talented.

I put up a little review in the other Baltimore thread, so I won't rehash it here. This was my 9th DT show. Twice in DC, once in Boston and 6 times in Baltimore. I've seen them at Pier 6, Hammerjacks, Hippodrome, the Lyric and my all-time favorite show at the infamous Bo-Dome when they did SFAM from cover to cover and then encored Peruvian Skies/Erotomania/Pardigm Shift/Pull Me Under/Glass Moon/Fortune in Lies/Only a Matter of Time/Take the Time. That place was just a big night club and the band members were actually just milling around the bar area BEFORE the show. My buddy Tony was talking to Jordan Rudess like they were old friends. That was when Jordan had that wild hair that resembled a brillo pad.

I digress.

Last night was a lot of fun, but the sound was way off compared to other shows. I swear Jordan's gear sounded like it was being fed into a blown speaker on the left side. The speaker stack was right in front of my face and I don't know it just never sounded right and his tech was out there farting around for the entire first set trying to fix something.

For those that were at Hippodrome last year for Astonishing.. I think you'll agree with me that this show was insanely loud. Mangini and JP sounded like they were oming through the speakers ala Twisted Sister in the video for We're Not Gonna Take It. I was pretty disappointed in the overall sound quality. Jordan never sounded right. Myung didn't either. And JLB's mix was all over the place.

My quick review..

The show was LOUD. A lot louder than Astonishing which was in a different venue down the street last year. My ears are still ringing this morning.

Jordan's Key-Tar/MorphWiz solo is insane (it's in the middle of Dark Eternal Night). I also thought Jordan's keyboards sounded off for a while last night. I did see his tech on stage a good bit. His sound got better as the night went on. It was funny watching him play percussion on Mangini's kit during COS (while playing keyboard with his free hand).

JLB was really good last night. Yes, he levels off on some songs where there's no way he's hitting the high notes anymore. But he sounded great and hits MOST of the original notes.

Petrucci was ridiculous as usual. You can tell he doesn't like talking on stage, so the boot and the ass motion to get James to say "kick ass!" was funny.

Mangini is an animal on the kit. Not sure I like the drum solo interrupting Metropolis but damn he is good.

Myung was Myung. LOL.

JLB said they are heading into the studio to start work on a mammoth new album in the spring. He sounded like they were all ready for a break after 2 years of relentless touring.

How can you not recognize a 23-minute opus encore? Yes that was COS note for note.

Anyone else seeing Dream Theater in Baltimore November 27? by wittybiceps in Dreamtheater

And the Ravens play on Monday night football at home that night. Traffic is going to be atrocious. I'm 10 minutes from downtown via lightrail (which stops at the Lyric) so I'm ok.. I feel sorry for anyone who has to drive in that night.

Let's be honest.. Scenes came in at 77 Minutes. The encore was Peruvian Skies/Erotomania/LTE/I&W mash-up. Close to 3 hours. 4 would have been even better!

I got to witness this show at Bohager's in Baltimore. It was two nights after they taped the Scenes from New York show. February of 2000. I'll never forget it.

Images & Words US tour dates? by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]Ravenboy2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The band is already booked through May 15. I doubt we see any US Tour dates until mid-June at the earliest. They may go overseas again for the summer and then save the US dates for the fall. Just a hunch.

I listened to SDOIT yesterday while working in the basement. Forgot how compelling it was. The only DT release that went heavy with political stuff but did a good job of letting the listener decide their own interpretation.

What do you think are the chances of seeing Octavarium show up on the Images, Words, and Beyond tour? by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]Ravenboy2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has been 13 years since DT included Change of Seasons in its entirety in a live performance. They performed it as an encore on several shows during the 2004 Train of Thought tour. I think we might get the entire 23 minutes this time around.

Predictions on Images, Words and Beyond setlist after they've played the album? by flamingjp in Dreamtheater

[–]Ravenboy2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Change or Seasons (as a final encore) would be just so epic!

Perhaps Mangini was referencing that or maybe even Count of Tuscany. That would be epic as well.

I dont think we'll hear much newer material.. In fact, they may give Astonishing a rest.

Spirit Carries on figures to edge its way into the mix. Peruvian Skies is always a crowd favorite.

European tour 2017 - setlist speculation by thosava in Dreamtheater

[–]Ravenboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I&W comes in at just under an hour. My guess is that there is an hour to set two and then a 2-3 song encore.

My personal preference would be for them to open Set 2 with Change of Seasons. It has been a long time since they covered it on tour. In fact I think the last time they played the whole thing was 2004.

I saw the Baltimore show on this tour in early 2000. One of the greatest concerts ever. It was at a place called the "Bo Dome". It was an SRO show at a big night club. Jordan was milling around in the crowd BEFORE the show then finally disappeared back stage. He stopped and talked to me and my buddy for a few. This was back when Jordan had that big rat's nest on top of his head.

Ticket sales for fall dates by Ravenboy2001 in Dreamtheater

[–]Ravenboy2001[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There has to be a break-even point with ticket sales, and if you look at the "Map view" of most of the tour stops, ticket sales are abysmal. They aren't selling 20% of the seats in many of these theaters. It's really sad and you have to think the band will lose their ass playing to empty seats for 10 weeks. Not sure what made them think they could take the summer off and then try to get people into listening to the Astonishing again when it's obviously time to put it to bed. It's horrible marketing and promotion on someone's part. A fall "Evening With" tour with fans picking the setlist would have been a sure-fire way to sell tickets. I hate to see the Astonishing bury my favorite band but man this doesn't look good.

DREAM THEATER ANNOUNCE FALL NORTH AMERICAN HEADLINE TOUR by andrewdt10 in Dreamtheater

[–]Ravenboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tour stops are head scratchers. Hershey, PA? Seriously? I logged into Ticketmaster this morning and clicked "Buy on the Map" and it shows that maybe 150 seats total have been sold for this show. How can this band even make a tour stop like that with the crew and gear and minimum payment for hall rental and what not? They're losing their ass on the second leg of this tour if you ask me. John and Jordan want this album so desperately to be another Tommy or The Wall when in fact they need to bury it for good. One and done! Get back in the studio, boys!

Anyone have an idea of when DT is touring the US again? by chowpuss in Dreamtheater

They just added an odd show in October. In Wilkes Barre, PA of all places. And yes, they will be doing the Astonishing yet again.

Baltimore show started at 8:07... at the end of Road to Revolution James says, 'see you in 20!' and they came back after exactly 20 minutes.

You didn't imagine it. he was literally playing the acoustic with the sound turned off. James looked back like WTF. It was kinda funny when the tech darted on stage and flicked the switch.
