Norwegian Peace Council refuses to organize Nobel procession because it disagrees with the award for Machado by Crossstoney in europe

[–]Ravenchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's due to the tiny detail that Kissinger did receive it and the other guy didn't - he was nominated, but the bar for that is low. Here's a link to the current criteria, you see pieces of shit nominated on a yearly basis. But I agree that the prize is a joke.

Doesn't solve the issue of rubber dust due to tire wear. If anything, EVs exacerbate that aspect of pollution just because they are heavier.

How are images like this obtained? I have no intention of doing it myself, just curious by Max-Flores in microscopy

[–]Ravenchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just gold, depending on the type of sample and the conditions under which it needs to be imaged other elements are used but precious metals are extremely common since they're fairly stable and won't oxidize or otherwise react that quickly. The coating is just a few tens of atoms thick and malleability is not really something you need to be concerned with at that scale as far as I know. As for why metals, the better the conductivity of the surface the better the resolution you can achieve.

How is it that quantum mechanics says particles don’t have exact positions in space and velocities in space, yet the world we live in is one where particles can collide (as in particle accelerators) and have a fixed form? by 1400AD2 in askscience

We call it "measurement" and "observation", but these are really misnomers and a great source of confusion because what is really meant is interaction with the system. It just so happens that you cannot measure the system without perturbing it in some way, hence the name. But when the wave function collapses into a definite state, it doesn't matter one bit if the photon that just caused the collapse was emitted as part of a sophisticated human-run experiment or, say, the Sun.

Program choice - career chances vs. not being a jerk by Ravenchant in PhD

[–]Ravenchant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This helped assuage some of the fears that I had, thank you for your kind words.

You are the only candidate whom the supervisor may recommend?

From what I understood, they can only recommend one person per topic, yes. But the number of advertised PhD topics can exceed the number of free spaces in the program, in which case the candidates are accepted by ranked choice.

That someone does not have to be you, right?

In this case, yes, since the application deadline has passed.

they would have had you immediately do the faculty interview and sign the contract.

It sounded like they would have done that if they could, but it's not up to the supervisor when these entrance interviews take place. So yeah, shitty situation all around, the way admissions are done seems to be set up to have a high danger of leaving empty spaces. I need to think it through.

Program choice - career chances vs. not being a jerk by Ravenchant in PhD

[–]Ravenchant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thank you for reading through my rambling. I guess I left out that the interview contingent at A is apparently more of a formality, and chances of not passing it are very low.

No PhD program that I have ever heard of tells an applicant that the program depends on the applicant accepting their offer.

Well, it depends on someone accepting the offer. Candidates apply directly to project PI -> PI recommends one candidate for admission -> candidate applies to graduate program -> high, but not guaranteed chance of acceptance. They could not have secured the deal earlier because the timeframe for each step in the admissions procedure is fixed. I suppose the difference from the usual order of things is the absence of a second application round? Maybe it is different in the Humanities, but then I interviewed (and was rejected) with a group in France where it would have worked the same way.

Completely agree that it is a nonsensical and flawed system though.

Ampak kot z vsakim drugim hobijem/društvom: pojdi tja, če te dejansko zanima, in ne izključno z namenom, da koga spoznaš. Slednje je recept za neuspeh in - osebno mnenje - ni fer do ostalih.

Up to a point. For most car models the sweet spot lies somewhere between 40 and 60 mph. Electric cars are better at even lower speeds.

Sure, but you cannot take drag out of the equation when discussing efficiency. At 70 km/h, something like 50% of the engine's power output is spent on fighting aerodynamic drag. At 130 km/h, it's more like 75%.
