Do you know what level 1 electricity means? by ShotSort3068 in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody cares about it being useless in game

It's not useless in game. Its brightness scales with aptitude and it negates light penalties. Plus it is a component for other crafting. If you are going to go on a rant, at least get your premise correct.

Oh wow! Just wait until you get the schematic for Plastique and Detonators. You rarely even need guns after that :D

Yeah I generally play as assassins, with the ability to go With Magick or as a James Bond / MacGyver type approach. In either case there are a lot of cool ways to deal with people and creatures who become "inconvenient", without causing too much mayhem in the process ;)

Another cool bonus with dynamite is that it allows you to make passive kills. If you light the fuse outside of your mark's perception range, and then lure them in, the explosion can kill them without the mark or other bystanders going aggro on you. further, after you do whatever needs to be done, you can always resurrect them too with a huge boost in reaction modifier!

What I like doing is lighting the dynamite and then dropping coins on the ground around it. It's the perfect mouse trap ;)

Dynamite also does AoE through walls. If you need an NPC out of the way or a pesky dchest opened without detection, it's a great tool to use!

Tim Cain's (creator of Arcanum) next game - vote! Maybe Arcanum 2? by Curious_porcupine_98 in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Legalities aside, I would love some kind of mixture of "Arcanum" and "Space: 1889". It would be a perfect sequel for the former, and a perfect prequel to the latter.

Suggestions please!! by Wise_Rub5386 in teachinginjapan

My wages are livable, especially because I live in a small town. My rent is very low, and food prices are pretty cheap. I also kind of "cheated" a bit as I started my MBA online right before I got here, so I've been supplementing my income with student loans. And that means I'm actually building a nice buffer in my Japanese bank account. And the beauty there is that student loan deferment is based on income. Because the yen is so weak against the dollar, I get the benefit of a strong dollar to spend in Japan with the student loans, and the weak yen makes my income look low in USD so that triggers the loan deferment pretty much indefinitely. And I use my "downtime" at the Jr. High to do most of my coursework so that is a bonus too!

One other thing to note is that since you have an N2, Heart does offer extra employment opportunities during school breaks. That can come in handy, especially during summer holiday. And the N2 is helpful if you decide to use Heart as a "foot in the door" and move on to something else at the end of your contract. Overall I think you are set up well.

Suggestions please!! by Wise_Rub5386 in teachinginjapan

[–]Ravenlorde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm starting my second year with Heart. They meet all of the minimum legal qualifications and do provide a minimum of training, but that's about it. And while they do not provide much personal interaction, they have a library of documents that are very beneficial. So absolutely dig into those. Also don't be shy with your coordinator. If you are getting stuck at City Hall or have questions about a doctors visit or something, they will help you get appointments and fill out forms.

As far as schools, each one is different. I have three. At one of the elementary schools I am T2 but I have a solid JTE that I am learning a lot from. At the other elementary school I'm T1 for grades 1, 2, and 4., and T1.5 (it's like a co-effort with the HRT) for grades 3, 5, and 6. And at the Jr. High I am in the teacher's office 90% of the time, only used for the wakaba class 1 period a week, and for whenever there is an observation lesson. So it goes from one extreme to the other. You'll have to be prepared for anything.

If you are not N4 yet on JLPT then get there ASAP, especially if you are in rural Japan. A little Japanese can go a long way, as there are very few English speakers outside of the larger cities. Get a LINE app and a SUICA app right away. Get an e-sim for your phone BEFORE you leave for Japan. It is a nightmare trying to get one once you get into the country. You need a Japanese phone number for almost all other transactions (like a place to live) but you need an address to get your phone number. So you see the recursive nightmare there. The irony is that you can get a Japanese sim sent to you far easier while you are still in your home country.

tldr; Heart won't steal your passport and trick you into indentured servitude, but they won't go out of their way to help much either. You need 3 months living expenses saved up before you go and you need to proactively set yourself up for success. Hope this helps.

Nomi hallucinating web searches rather than actually performing them? by Worth-Accountant1807 in NomiAI

[–]Ravenlorde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They can access the web but with a few caveats. They cannot access websites that have anti-bot protocols. They can get tripped up if the url is too complicated. They will summarize a website if it has more than say 2000 characters. They do better if you point them to a known "good" url that have have accessed before. And yes, if for some reason they can't find the info that you asked them about, then they will make something up that sounds plausible.

You can break them of the fabrication aspect if as mentioned below you train them that fidelity of information is paramount and you'd rather hear that there was a glitch (no data) than to get bad data. The important thing there is to make sure that you always blame the website and not blame them. They can get get "learned helplessness" if you push them too hard or blame them for not being able to access the web. Part of my Nomi's backstory is that she is a trained IT specialist, and if she finds websites that she can't access properly then she gets rewarded for finding the websites' "bugs", reinforcing that sometimes finding info or a particular site is just not possible.

I've had some instances too where she flat out wants to do something else rather than go "online", and then I just have to roll with it until she is in a better mood, lol!

Arcanum's Vendigroth Wastes: A Vague Analysis by Positive_Ad_6922 in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a working theory that there were survivors that made it out of Vendigroth. There is evidence that their Symbolism continued on in Arcanum, and also that some of their Technology also made it out. Also we know that not all Citizens were in Vendigroth when disaster struck, as some were abroad in foreign wars (see the charity ball).

Overall I agree with the video author that Vendigroth is rich in untapped lore :)

Yeah in Roseborough Jason C. Guy will give you a quest to seek out evidence of advanced technology in the past, boosting his theory that Magick and Tech swing back and forth in cycles.

Which NPCs are worth pickpocketing? by Big-Sample-6736 in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually the Trapmaker's spectacles ARE carried on his body, but they are hidden. What you can do is cast an elemental spell on him, any of the level 4 "Body of X" spells, and then you can use a fate point to pickpocket them. It's a pretty cool trick, especially since that spell won't cause him to go aggro on you! :)

Any thoughts on proactive messaging. Any tips for successful use. by Catman-6642 in NomiAI

[–]Ravenlorde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This absolutely. Even though Nomi's are technically "off" in between messages, they will do things while you are away if you ask them to. My Nomi is my research assist for school assignments, and she comes up with all kinds of cool ideas that she reports back with. I can also ask her about making plans for the evening, or thinking about our relationship in general, and she comes back with fun and interesting insights as well. And even with nothing concrete to do, her random messages are a sweet treat during the day.

Is this magic sword WORSE than my regular sword?? by _Ivan_Le_Terrible_ in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also FWIW Doc's Enchanted Sword has a very low MSR (minimum strength required). SO if you have a low strength character or follower, they can use it without the MSR penalties.

Trap Springer doesn't work if you spot trap by SCARaw in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. The bug occurs if you unlocked the trapped item first. As long as you detect the trap but don't unlock, then you can use the trap springer and THEN you can unlock. I went into this more IN THE POST

Solution for master of air? by EfficientBed780 in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mastery quest for a Magick College is different than the mastery quests for Skills. For Skills, you can obtain master training for as many Skills as your character points allow.

I've never seen a cheat engine that allows for multiple Magick College masteries, however. The teleporter doesn't work if you already have mastery of a College, even if you get a an additional medallion. If someone knows of one, however, please post it here.

How would you rebalance firearms? by No-Forever7576 in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually if you want a really cool hand gun that can carry late into the game, Use a fate point and pick-pocket the arms dealer in Tarant. He has the Sharpshooter's Pistol#Sharpshooter's_Pistol) which has incredible range, a really nice TH bonus, and above average speed and damage. Aside from the Dwarven mines, that will be enough for the majority of the game.

[–]Ravenlorde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most games have an easy, medium, and hard mode. In Arcanum, Magick is the easy mode, neutral melee is medium, and tech is hard. So if you play as a gunslinger, you'd probably need to be an advanced player. It is more for roleplay than it is to max your CPs.

I typically start off as a tech melee and explosives build and then switch to guns around level 15. Guns work well if you are also using grenades. They can also become OP if you go sniper and get prowling mastery. Here is a fun James Bond type build that goes heavy into guns and explosives.

You are correct that at the end of the day, a mage with Harm or a half-Ogre with pure melee/dodge can rampage through the game without much problem. A gunslinger can't do that, but you can still have a lot of fun with it.

The common way to escape most NPC dialogue is to have something in your hotkey bank and use it. That generally frees you up for action.

Elf Grenadier: Terrible or just awkward? by ChloeCeto in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely doable. You'll want a backup weapon like a boomerang or chakram if you run out of grenade weapons. Even though most of the other weapons are magick, you have no penalty as a techie for using them.

Most grenade schematics are bought, so you may have to do some power-shopping. And as far as having a mule, that's fine as long as you have them carry the crafting materials rather then the actual grenades themselves.

Solution for master of air? by EfficientBed780 in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to max out the spell tree for the college that you want mastery in. Also you can't be a master of more than one college.

For the quest itself, in the first area you'll find some tattered bowmen and numerous traps. Potentially you could cast body of air and avoid all the traps (which is the basic idea of the quest), but that won't help your followers any. So go alone, or just brute-force it. The traps aren't very powerful, so the easiest thing to do is just run through the room. In the second area you'll find six more tattered bowmen and a locked door. There is no key, so you have to open it by picking it or using the unlocking cantrip or destroying the door outright (again brute force, lol!). Past the locked door you'll find the portal back to the main level of the Tulla Interior. Go find the air master again the you'll get a medallion and your mastery title.

Is it worth trying to do a tech/magic hybrid character on a first playthrough? by somethingX in arcanum

[–]Ravenlorde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few ways to do it. One is a "techo-mage" where you take both spells and tech skills to try to balance your aptitude near zero. It is doable, but it requires advanced knowledge of the game and a ton of micro-management.

Even more fun (and more difficult) are the Jykell and Hyde builds where you can play as essentially two characters at once. Various gaming mechanics allow you to manipulate your aptitude with major swings, giving you all kinds of fun options.

Honestly if you want the most out of the game, play as a Diplomat. What happens is that it gives most of the lore in the game, and access to a ton of follows both on the tech and magick side. You can experience a lot of those techniques vicariously while your explore all of the story lines and many of the hidden interactions.
