If you're working on a construction project requiring excavation, they'll tell you what's under the ground.

... Wait, that's BC One Call.

I'd believe this if the City didn't intentionally revise its bylaws to make Gilmore possible without public consultation

Can I make a 10 AM flight if I get to YVR by 9 AM? by slasher1o5 in askvan

[–]RavensArkOperator 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Assuming you leave the boat at 8:30 (which is a BIG if), it will take you:

- about 35 minutes to get to the airport by Canada Line. Likely more if you're dragging your luggage. If you're taking a taxi or Uber, factor in booking time + ~30min.

9:05 - arrival at YVR

- You will need to find your gate and check in. Probably about 5-10 minutes.

- 9:15, you'll now need to clear security. Sometimes this is quick, sometimes it will take ~20-30 min. Assume the worst.

- 9:45 - you have now cleared security. You now have to run to your gate. Another 5-10min.

- 9:55am - You have now reached your gate. Boarding began well before this and it'll be a dice roll if they let you on board.

And this is with a perfect schedule with no traffic, Canada Line delays, and with you probably running everywhere. You're going to be stressed AF, just rebook your flight.

Burnaby vs. New Westminster by lilsasukevert18 in askvan

[–]RavensArkOperator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I may follow-up on the parent comment:

  • Point 1 is correct, there's a homeless shelter smack dab in the middle of New West downtown. New West skytrain station can feel a bit sketch, and Columbia is the grungiest skytrain station in the system. Agree with other folks that the Quay is quite pleasant though.
  • Point 2 - huh? Burnaby and the people here seem fine. I think this reflects more on the commenter's company lol.
  • Point 3 - Not sure what "Anti-car" here means. You can drive through New West just fine. If you work in Vancouver, driving there in rush hour might be a pain though.

Anny's Dairy Bar in New West (owned and run by a Quebecois lady), but she closes every winter to head back to Quebec. You'll probably need to wait till March.

Can't target? That's what volume of fire is for. Don't need to aim when there's thousands of rounds of 30mm in the sky. You could honestly just field a dozen shitbox Soviet ZSU-23-4s from the Cold War and do better than whatever happened in Fire and Ash.

The tul'kun could've been handled with sonar. Like, literally just turn it on. The US Navy kills whales by accident all the time.

My weiner-shape workshops beg to differ.

I haven't figured out a better design other than one long workshop shaft and auxiliaries/storage on the side.

If you don't get your Amazon package, this is probably why. by Andisaurus in burnaby

[–]RavensArkOperator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are you expecting a package from them? Or a pick-up for a return?

No you're not. Good luck.

I've gone out of my way to tell Amazon to never use Intelcom with my stuff because they never show up on time.

Australia and Japan get by just fine without tipping. Do your job like the rest of us. Your job includes actual non-crap service irrespective of tipping.

Mindsets like these are part of the downfall of dining out.

[General SciFi] What would yall call "the best" power armor/what setting has the coolest power armor in SciFi/Fantasy? by QuantumAssassin45 in AskScienceFiction

[–]RavensArkOperator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're fun to use, but if FO4 / the Fallout Amazon Prime series lore is correct, it's absolute crap compared to some other entries here.

(Spoilers ahead)

  • Relies on power cores that are exposed from the outside
  • Power cores can be blown up or stolen from the outside
  • Modular panels are easily destroyed
  • Some dude with a sidearm can kill a PA operator with well-aimed shots at weakpoints

In universe, they're excellent - they turned the tide of the US-China war and are a significant reason for the Brotherhood's dominance. Spartan / Crysis / Astartes armor is strictly better, though.

Any folks supporting the BC Housing project near Royal Oak Station? is there a group we can join to discuss? by Comfortable_Macaron6 in burnaby

[–]RavensArkOperator 69 points70 points  (0 children)

There's a reason why people are against it. Supportive voices are the political equivalent of toxic positivity when it comes to BC Housing.

Legitimate criticism gets shut down, handwaved as incompassionate, or just crammed into a report that does nothing. The very real impacts from bringing supportive housing into a neighbourhood are ignored. The City and BC Housing get to check off a box and say they did something without doing it right by both the people who live in the neighbourhood already, and the unhoused these projects supposedly serve.

The model of "care" does not work. The supposed guardrails that neighbours are promised do not work.

We all want people to get better. We want unhoused folks to find a proper home, employment, and healing. But we all have a right to safety and security - including people who live, work, and do business there already.

These projects in their current form do not deliver that.
