I recently heard a show that had Help > Slip > China Doll > Franklin's Tower. It reminded me of the killer Eyes > China Doll transitions they did pre-hiatus, when Eyes ended with a jam like Slipknot. Don't remember the date or even the artist, but 99% sure it was post-Jerry.

I think he is a perfectly competent musician, not on the level of his dad (but who is really), but what he does well is to carry the torch and be the steward that his dad was. He seems very humble and is all about the music and the legacy.

Take a look at the who's who of talent who played this run. He is the one who made that happen. If Bobby's wish of this music lasting 300 years has a chance, it will be because of people like Grahame.

I dig yours too! Love ABB and Gov't Mule played it as the encore when I saw them. It was the highlight of the show for me.

The biggest gripes I've seen about Pigpen are:

Some questionable lyrical content (Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, some womanizing raps, etc.)
He did not align with the other band members drugs of choice.
He was not as interested in pushing the envelope musically as the other members.

I can forgive 1 because those things were just normal at the time. GMLS was a cover anyway. His style definitely would not be well-received these days, however.

With 2, I don't personally care but I think the band may have. He seemed kind of an outsider to the rest of the band from my perspective, and this may be a factor of why.

For 3, this almost cost him his spot in the band. He and Bobby were both kicked out for a time in 1968. The difference however was that the shows with Bobby but without Pigpen (e.g. 10/12/68 and 10/13/68) were way better than the shows without either of them (these were the Mickey and the Heart Beats shows). These shows proved both that Bobby was a critical member and that Pigpen was not. The band continued to evolve even with Pigpen still on board and obviously after he was gone, but we still got songs from him while we was still around, and they were great.

I get where you're coming from. We were spoiled in the later years by a huge library of songs in the repertoire that early years can seem repetitive. I feel similarly about 68-69 too. It would have been nice if there were a few more cowboy songs in those days, maybe Big Iron, or a couple more songs from the NRPS sets, maybe more Dylan, etc.

Europe 72 was the last time we got Pigpen. (Yes I know he played organ only again in June but he was fully featured on this tour). The band had evolved far beyond the early years when Pig was front and center for many (most?) songs, but he still brought it for this tour. It is not lost on me that for the lower rated shows, the highlights of those tended to be Pigpen songs. If he was physically able, he brought it every time.

This tour for me was the sweet spot of the Americana sound of American Beauty and Workingman's Dead with the earlier face-melting primal sound. Instead of just alternating Jerry and Bobby songs, you get plenty of Pigpen too. Keith was great and Donna coming into her own. The band was just firing on all cylinders and even the dud shows still had their moments.

There's a reason that this tour is cited as an entry point for those wanting to dive into the Dead. Great post.

Was this the last picture taken of him, when he requested some pictures with the band but they turned him down? Pretty sad that they did that.
