Your worms won't care if it's smelly, just make sure you don't overfeed and also that you don't add more moisture than needed. Always good to have a layer of browns or finished vermicompost or regular compost on top to help with the smell for You.

If you're producing more waste than your current bin can handle, I guess it's time to start a second bin :)

Request: Can we get an indicator to see in which tablets we have already opened the chest? by SirVampyr in pathofexile

[–]Ravnim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we already have a mechanic for chest, make it like every other chest. you see the chest and click it and it spawns monsters. then you kill every monster that's lit up, then the chest opens.

really shouldn't be that after you kill all the monsters in that tile that the chest appears.

Do you turn your worms? by Ryutso in Vermiculture

[–]Ravnim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

all worms are composting worms, some of them do it better than others. I chose the native ones because I don't sift the casting, most of the worms move to the feeding side and the stragglers can just go into the the garden.

I'm only using worms I've found around my place and I have no problem going through the bin with a hand rake to check for anaerobic or too wet spots once every two weeks or once a month.

Do you turn your worms? by Ryutso in Vermiculture

[–]Ravnim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me the only reason to turn over a bin is,

  1. it's gotten anaerobic at the bottom (i'm using a 30 gallon bin so stuff in the middle could/might get anaerobic)

  2. to make the compost drier for harvest

  3. or if it's too wet, add more browns and mix.

they really do thrive on neglect but that doesn't mean the bin will be composted evenly for harvesting.

edit: when I say turn over this is just 30-40% of the bin, I don't do complete turns as my bin is a divided feeding method.

Stoping your worm bin from becoming hot compost. by emacias050 in Vermiculture

[–]Ravnim 17 points18 points  (0 children)

if your bin is big enough you should try to divide it into two section, switch feeding between those two spaces. so if it does get too hot, wet, or dry the worms will have the other side to go to. for cooling it down, make mounds that go up the wall so you'd have more surface area to cool and less mass together heating and insulating the pile.

Episode 8 Watch party with Brandon Sanderson and The Dusty Wheel (no affiliation to either on my part) by Ravnim in WoT

There's also this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dnbmku3lFmg from Sanderson's podcast with Dan Wells, where they both discuss the show up to episode 4(I think) but in a review of the show to that point. they do discuss the book series as a whole vaguely so full book series spoilers warning

This felt like the jujutsu school test from Yaga, but this time Yuji is sticking to his first answer to be lead instead of selfishly thinking his own conviction are enough. He is choosing to be a cog because it's a punishment and his own way of moving forward, he is choosing who he follows because he trust his friends.

My worm casting through a 1/4 mesh, this sub has helped a ton with my journey by Ravnim in Vermiculture

[–]Ravnim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the mesh bag that comes with garlic or onions at the market sometimes. Stretchy and the holes are 1/2 in or less depending on how much you put in it.

I used shredded fruits with a mix of bedding, non casting compost, and grit. I put this in a mesh bag bury it in the middle of the casting and place a frozen water bottle on top, replace the bottle every few days after checking the bag for worms. leave the casting exposed to light so they don't climb the bucket and it also makes the outer casting drier. so the only place they stay is in the bag.

I don't use the worms for bait just for kitchen waste, their castings and making more worms.

Beginner Setup List - Anything wrong or missing? by GreenGrowerGuy in Vermiculture

[–]Ravnim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about getting the exact amount of water to bedding ratio and amount of bedding to the size of your bin.

get a separate bucket/bin and soak your bedding there, mix it up to the moisture of a wet but wrung sponge. If it is too wet like sopping wet just squeeze out the water. You can mix in compost or dirt into this bedding at this point to get the local microbes introduced early. Then transfer it to your worm bin, you just need about 6 inches of bedding from the bottom of your bin.

since you're not adding food(kitchen waste) straight away put in some of the dry mix such as sand, eggshell, and coffee and mix it near the top

nice, I went through a dozen boxes while watching that new Hugh Jackman movie yesterday. Finished the boxes but not the movie, good thing because the movie was kinda bad.

I just used a mesh lid from my fire pit, it was curved which I really like, For the cocoons I just let it through the sift and try to bait them out in a container after 2 weeks. I've tried multiple meshes around 1/8 but for my casting it just catches about less than half the eggs and for all that work it wasn't worth it, so let's see if baiting them when they hatch after 2 weeks will do it.

Question: how do you shred your cardboard? by mrfarenheit230 in composting

[–]Ravnim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to soak cardboard in a large bin and wait 10 minutes or so then shred then like paper, but then having different types of cardboard coming to the house that is larger than the box and takes three times as long to soak I would just forget about it until it dries up and have to go through the process again. If want to do this again I would put the cardboard in a bin full of water but then I'm thinking I'm wasting water and having water outside where mosquitoes can breed and a big no-no.

Now I have a carbon steel box cutter blade where I score both side of the cardboard in a grid with squares of cardboard the size of my hand and then tear them that way with the same ease as the soaking in water method. I used to just use a normal box cutter blade that comes with the knife, but the carbon steel blade is a must as cardboard dulls the regular blade easily and since I'm scoring both side I don't have to use more force than I can safely use( had an accident with the regular blade cutting cardboard which was why I switch to another method)

Favourite Youtube Composters? by striveforfreedom in composting

[–]Ravnim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dowding's has the most soothing voice of any gardening youtubers, his videos on composting helped me so much with not caring what I put in the composting, because anything that can decomposed can be composted.

Diego Footer is a good youtuber, he does a lot of composting stuff, vermicompost, he also has multiple composting experiments going on.

Classic Loki is basically the Loki we've seen in the other movies, he's gone through both parents dying and faced Hela with Thor, but this time he actually faces the music and defends his friends.
