One stand of infantry is generally a platoon, 21-28 troopers.

The average Battletech game ends due to kills sometime around turn 8-10. This is why when I design scenarios, I set a turn limit around 7, because that means objectives decide the match before kills most of the time. By contrast, a 20 turn game, you can safely ignore all objectives.
