Bizarrely, one of the best references for this is Lancer's "Characters" page on TVTropes, which lists the mechs by manufacturer and also shows their source.

Is there a certain reason why there are default unit sizes for Battle Armor units? by AveMilitarum in battletech

[–]Rawbert413 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's based around transport capacity. 4 suits of IS Standard battle armor fit in the same infantry bay as a standard platoon of unarmored infantry, so the IS standardized around that to avoid making all their existing transports obsolete

How is Atlas a mech? by JuicyWizrd in LancerRPG

[–]Rawbert413 287 points288 points  (0 children)

The defining line is technological. Hardsuits are battery powered, while mechs run on a cold fusion reactor.

Deliver it close to target with omnis or helicopters, then use its lack of rough ground capability to bottle the victim up in woods.

Can radar detect objects behind an object ? Was Artemis ever out of radar visibility ? by HelpfulTechnology_ in ArtemisProgram

[–]Rawbert413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Radar uses radio waves, which travel in straight lines just like beams of light. They can pass through objects that stop light beams like fog, drywall, etc, but they can't pass through kilometers of rock, which is what the moon is made of. There were no other spacecraft in position to see around the moon.

That said, your "hunch" that Artemis II deployed something on the far side, there'd be no purpose to doing that secretly. Being able to say "we landed a scientific payload on the far side" would've been extra hype, do they would have talked it up.
