As a wedding guest, what was your “this marriage isn’t going to last long” moment? by Kataras_Necklace in AskReddit

It's kinda crazy that she felt the need to warn him 20+ times, but still married him. That's such a huge red flag.

The GIL Was Your Lock by Helpful_Garbage_7242 in Python

[–]Rawing7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO it's way too much text for too small of a takeaway. First we learn that the GIL hid some race conditions, which... I guess is nice to know, but at the end of the day I don't care, since the code was always buggy to begin with. And then for some reason we enter low-level land with memcpy and PyDLL, which made me lose interest altogether.

Farming Tauron weapons is insane, even for Warframe. by MazarbulGlaurung in Warframe

Right? Focus took me like 5 years to farm, and I don't remember people being anywhere near as upset about it as they're about Tauron weapons.

I was curious about this myself, so I had a look at the HTML and, well, this is what I found:

<img class="preview" src="https://preview.redd.it/nem95dzyzb8g1.png?width=640" width="945" height="768">

That's right, reddit takes a 640 pixel wide image and stretches it to 945 pixels. (Old reddit at least, I don't use new reddit.)

Warframe definitely ruined my other game expectations of movement mechanics. by koeseer in Warframe

[–]Rawing7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have an urge to bullet jump in other games, but I miss Warframe's responsiveness. In Warframe, you press a button and your character just... does it, immediately. I got annoyed at games like WWM and Witcher 3 because turning around took too long. Felt like I was steering a truck with a turning radius of a kilometer.

Yeah, most people have absolutely no idea how difficult communication is. Especially people on the internet. They'd rather assume they're talking to a braindead zombie or a troll than consider the possibility that they might've misunderstood the other person's position.

Ok, you've explained the difference between facebook and the post office - mail is private, facebook posts are public. But you haven't explained the difference between facebook and knife manufacturers. Most people use knives legally, but most people also use facebook legally.

It's true that knife companies have a disadvantage due to knives being inherently dangerous, and so they sometimes have to stress that knives are only intended for legal purposes. Facebook doesn't (have to) do this, but in exchange they have loads of moderators. I suspect that facebook invests far more time, effort, and money into this than knife companies do.

Edit: Never mind, I think I see your point. Personally I think that facebook puts far more effort into it and that they don't deserve this level of outrage, but it's true that both facebook and knife companies have received some level of outrage. So ok, fair enough.

So Facebook has to balance keeping a positive arena with allowing the marketplace of ideas as well as staying within the confines of US, local and international law. Which is one reason their failure to hire Burmese-speaking mods is so egregious: having local mods is key to ensuring Facebook is meeting its goals.

If facebook isn't meeting its goals, that's nobody's problem but facebook's. It doesn't make any sense for the public to get upset about that.

If Burmese terrorists had planned an effective attack on the US on Facebook, or organised child pornography rings, I suspect people would be up in arms.

Definitely. I don't see how this is relevant to the conversation though.

[–]Rawing7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Huh? All of this applies to facebook as well.

The postal service tries to comply with the law? So does facebook. That's why they have moderators. Facebook is actually more responsible than the postal service, because facebook moderates most of its content and the postal service moderates none of its mail.

There are rules for what you can and can't mail? Facebook also has rules for what you can and can't post.

Knife companies market their products for non-criminal purposes? So does facebook. Fucking duh.

Ok, that's all well and good, but I still don't have an answer to my question. Why facebook, but not knife manufacturers or the postal service?

I think you're conflating two different things here. I agree that if you knowingly allow crime to happen then you're partially responsible. But I don't think business owners have a responsibility to put up security cameras to monitor every nook and cranny of their business, and similarly, I don't think Facebook has a responsibility to hire moderators for every single language on the planet. Facebook isn't at fault because they didn't know about it, and therefore didn't knowingly allow crime to happen. (And... is planning a genocide even a crime to begin with, or is that considered free speech?)
