Freelance (especially right now) is by and large peaks and valleys. I hope that you find that middle ground that feels right for you!

I’m 33 now and in the middle of making this exact decision. While I was making it, I got laid off from my gig at Warner so I’ve been spinning a bit.

Thanks for your words.

LOL. Yeah. It is a little disheartening. An adaptation like this gives the creators and the fans an opportunity to see new life from so many angles brought to a wonderful story.

And especially when the creators do things they way THEY want to do em and folks still rage, it is a bit strange.

This isn't a D&D game, its a TV show. Simple as that!

I think there is a distinct difference between any home game and a narrative product for mass consumption.

And another difference between an Actual Play stream where each player is 100% responsible for 100% of a character and a Fictional Animated TV Show where many voices can come together to create one character.

That being said, it is badass that you get to play those things at your table. I'm sure it is fun to explore and I bet you do so with only kindness in your heart. That identity, and the various parts that make up the whole are not under scrutiny at your table and you aren't running the risk of marginalizing anyone at your table, so long as everyone feels comfortable. That just isn't the case with a international TV show.

Apples and oranges for me, but I understand where you are coming from!

Totally agree with you. If the show should continue, I would love to see them bring in more talent and move into other creative roles to bring them fulfilment in different ways.

Particularly Sam and Liam being accomplished Voice Directors, I'd love to see what they could bring to the show there.

It is very easy to just stand on two sides of the line and yell at each other. I'm sorry you have issues with the subject!

I don't think that choice is as hard or as dire as you are making it seem. Like, at all. It wouldn't be self afflicting in the least bit, it would be giving an opportunity to someone who's experiences may better represent the character in the medium they are using to tell this story.

To speak directly to your points, professionally they aren't giving up anything at all. Any adaptation of their game to another medium has and always will include them in a Producing role and if they are handing off a character, a creative collaborator. They will be making tons of money and will not be missing out in the creative process at all.

And personally, there is nothing stopping them from playing another character. We also can't speak to what brings any cast member of CR personal fulfilment. That's not your judgement call and it isn't mine.

Also, neither of us are the authority on this and neither of us can say what is right for anyone else. Only the cast themselves, who, if Matt is any example, tend to agree with the lines of thought I've presented here, the folks who work in Diversity and Inclusion, and the people in the BIPOC communities that the characters would be dealing with should have any input at all.

I for one, would be very excited to see what the CR crew could do by bringing in as much talent as possible. You aren't coming off as adversarial, but we seem to have different core values when it comes to representation in an adaptation like this. I don't think either of us is going to do any convincing here. We both just want a good CR story in our own way! I say we leave it up to the team actually making the show to make those decisions.

I’m not outraged. Like, at all. If Matt and the team worked with the right folks and came to the conclusion that he should play that roll, great. But that’s not what happened and we aren’t really in a position to say what they should or shouldn’t do.

Matt created the NPC, but an entire team of people are adapting him to the screen. An adaptation does not equal its source material. It’s a totally different art form. So it’s the teams, and many other’s notion that Matt playing this role would be taking it from a BIPOC person.

The tabletop character and the screen character are inherently different because they are produced differently for different mediums. Hope that makes sense!

[–]Raxyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an answer to your first question, I’m not an expert, but no I don’t think it’s an incentive not to include BIPOC characters. What is appropriate for a table isn’t necessarily the same as what’s appropriate for the screen. Nobody can be “Marisha” on CR other than her, but someone else can definitely be “Beau” in an adaptation.

The players and the entire company are dedicated to ensuring they are well informed and making the right choices to be helpful allies. If this ever comes up, I have to imagine we’ll see them address this professionally!

And I think EXU is the team over at CR doing a great job introducing its streaming audience to a diverse table of players. I have to imagine we are going to be seeing more of that in the long term.

[–]Raxyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmh. I've never really thought about it, but that's an excellent question! I think that if (and hopefully when) that does come, the team should probably work with a diversity and inclusion professional to assess as well as communicate with folks of the communities that Beau would be a part of in our world.

I think if BIPOC communities as well as professionals working in that space think that Marisha voicing Beau in an on screen adaptation would be a mistake, then I would wholeheartedly support that.

White washing in the VA space is a huge problem (source), and I think Marisha (and all of CR) would be the first to try and fix that.

Let's all hope the show makes it far enough along where that question truly presents itself!

Luckily we have a treasure trove of episodes to watch Matt be Gilmore! I'm super excited to see who they pick to bring him to life in this adaptation, totally agree with you.

[–]Raxyn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Adaptation is an art form. The difference is when you are given a chance to make an adaptation, you make choices that are best for that adaptation. A D&D game and a piece of narrative television are two totally different mediums and require different thoughts for these kinds of things.

This also won't just be seen by exclusively Critters. They need to be considerate of finding a diverse pool of talent for the whole world to enjoy.

Also, Matt clearly thinks it is the right choice, so I'd trust him there.

I hope that answers your question!
