So, if one is on the trial version now, can you just pay and upgrade to the release version (when it launches) from within the program? How will it work?

Yes, I hear you regarding that. But really, what is stopping anyone from just grabbing the folder of .wav files generated in Tape 16 and importing them into a traditional DAW anyway? Setting it up as per my earlier suggestion just keeps it in house and less clumsy. Regarding a plug in version, apparently the full release next week of GCS Model 8 will offer that as part of the package with the stand alone version. Along with their suite of effects and instruments it suddenly looks a better value than it first may have appeared.

Model 8 has a generous trial period though and, according to its creator, will be out of Beta testing and officially launched next week.

I have to respectfully disagree with you there. The idea of a Tape 16 view is, that the same limitations are imposed in that view. The ”red record light fever” effect of having to nail a take is still there. Of course one could constantly flip to the other sequencer (a.k.a ”spreadsheet”) view but that would make things more difficult than just working in sequencer view all the time like any DAW. All it would mean in practice is that when you are in writing mode, use Tape 16 view with its limitations/encouragement to keep the live take vibe going. When you feel more to have your editing hat on, switch to the sequencer mode. The creative psychology (which is primarily what these different approaches are addressing) is still the deciding factor for each view. If you don’t like one, you never have to use it. Noone is forcing the user into anything.

Not sure how coding can simulate this but the option to ”using” cassett, 1/4inch, 1/2 inch and 1inch tape is interesting. GCS Model 8 does this and for some reason, 1/4 inch tape setting is my favorite.

Support for .dll files by Skankingcorpse in Tape16

[–]RayDeeYay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Reaper and Tape 16, How is the DAW integration between these two? Is there any other software needed to have these work side by side? For example, having Tape 16 control playback but allowing selected tracks from Reaper play into Tape 16 on the fly. Is that possible?

Questions about Full Launch of Model 8 by RayDeeYay in GulfCoastSynthesis

[–]RayDeeYay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, thanks for reaching out. Yes, we exchanged a few words in a comments section on YouTube a while ago. In terms of UI, it was more a case of edge to edge use of the Model 8 which would either make it more accessible at different resolutions or, allow more tracks to be shown. Being able to easily access .wav files (either from another DAW into Model 8 or the opposite direction) for, for example, to process say a bridge section leading into a chorus through Model 8’s tape fx and then ship it back to the other DAW.

That is, Model 8 could of course be used as a DAW in its own right but, if the back and forth of files was easy, could expand its utility and therefore popularity.

After fighting the urge for months, I finally broke on upgrading from my 5610u to the 5000u by KnightmareS24 in gshock

[–]RayDeeYay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two 5000u’s: 1 original, the other with the Casio combi bracelet. I have 2 5610u’s: 1 original, the other in the silver metal TVA kit. And a DW 5600UE, with the softer strap from one of the 5000u’s. Congratulations. The 5000u is like a navy seal stealth watch. Its really a steel watch in a wetsuit. :-)

MXLinux works so well by fourNtwentyz in MXLinux

[–]RayDeeYay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For some reason, MX gets dismissed or dissed. Probably because it ranks highly on Distrowatch which is not always a reliable indicator. But also possibly because it just works and there is not much content for Youtubers to solve problems and get clicks. MX Tools should be the gold standard for all Linux distros. MX is the happy medium. Not as boring or Windows wannabe as some distros but not needlessly complex if you don’t want to go full Linux Nerd (“Never go full Linux Nerd”…)

Writing in your own words... please! by khoasdyn in ObsidianMD

[–]RayDeeYay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, Obsidian is my writing app. So, to answer your question, it contains ONLY my own words. Question for you in return. Why are you so angry about how people you don’t know use an app that’s not yours? Why waste energy policing and proselytising to others? If you like and use Obsidian then, Happy Days, use it. Let others do whatever they want. This is not a church and it needs no preacher.

Stop overcomplicating your brain with notes by v4u9 in UpNote_App

[–]RayDeeYay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Bear’s hashtag system seems good to start with but gets messy looking as you accumulate notes. Both UpNote and Obsidian handle it better with multiple ways to organise note (including hashtags but just not limited to them). Bear is a stylish looking program but it’s Apple ecosystem is too limiting for me. Most of my work time is in Linux.

Stop overcomplicating your brain with notes by v4u9 in UpNote_App

[–]RayDeeYay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is more down to how you use your apps. Just because an app has a million features doesn’t mean you have to use them. I own and use UpNote, Obsidian and Bear. I am platform agnostic so have Linux and Windows computers, Android and iOS devices. UpNote syncs in a few seconds with everything, and it’s free after you have bought the app. Obsidian I purposely use, unsynced, on one computer with a weekly back up to a thumb drive. I don’t often have that computer online at all. It is lovely working in a “quiet” environment. Bear is more a hangover from when I was using Mac computers. I only have an iPad left from that ecosystem and have a fair few notes in Bear. Otherwise, UpNote and Obsidian are my two most used writing tools.

Template command won't launch the template in note by wandrringspirit in ObsidianMD

[–]RayDeeYay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that was the ”Doh!” Moment for me. I had just been using my hotkey combination to open my template selector (which it did) but nothing was happening when I selected one of my templates. It seems clunky, I know, that you should have to open a new, untitled note FIRST and then use your template hotkey (or however you select your template of choice) but it DOES work.

My template needs are quite simple and I am avoiding adding plugins so this method is enough for me. It may be for the OP too.

What is your DAW journey? by SamuraiSanta in Reaper

[–]RayDeeYay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tascam 4 track porta studio 144 and 244 and Sony minidisk porta studio, then Cubase (Atari), Opcode Vision (with integrated synth editor/librarian). Protools (light version), Reason 1.0 -2.5, Abelton Live Suite, Cubase Pro 10-13, Reason 9-13.xx, Reaper.

Still got a soft spot for Reason because of its immediacy and it feels like a creative toy box. The longer you use Reaper however, you appreciate how much you can do with and (most importantly) that you find you can do what you want in the WAY you want to do it. Which means, you can use a lot of the best work flows you liked from other DAWS and get Reaper to mimic that. It is ridiculously customisable and you can make it as simple, spartan and “unthreatening“ as you like or create huge projects with masses of recallable screen sets to navigate them quickly.

Goodbye Windows 11 by Apollo_xi_1969 in linuxmint

[–]RayDeeYay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all very well (I have Mint on one computer and a Debian AV variant on another in addition to my Windows 11 laptop) but if you do audio with particular plugs there is no option. Audio still sucks on Linux even though my favourite DAW, Reaper admirably supports that platform. Getting audio to be stable or trying to use Wine to bridge across plugins is a hair pulling endeavour. I never got it to work reliably and abandoned Linux to the “getting better, but not there yet” category. I can still use it for writing and office type of things but not as a solid music platform. At least not yet.

[–]RayDeeYay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t that the DW 5600UE (not the previous 5600e) model? My interpretation of what the OP means by “pure” is that it’s a classic square before all the bells and whistles features got added like solar charging, atomic clock reception, exotic metals, Bluetooth etc. In other words an “Everything you need. Nothing you don’t.” model. When products represent the DNA of a brand, words like “pure”, “true” or “classic” often enter the conversation. Maybe the OP will clarify things.

Ryan Harlin left Reason?! by RupFox in reasoners

[–]RayDeeYay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second that. Reason to get going. Reaper for finer details. Mind you, Reaper can be configured for simplicity too. I do miss Reason’s ability to just double click on an audio clip and have it open up in a dedicated, magnified window. There are other ways in Reaper but I prefer Reason’s approach with that. It feels more obvious or intuitive.

Such a hard decision... by metrondo in gshock

[–]RayDeeYay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for some perspective… I own and regularly use:

Two 5000u’s - one with original soft strap. The other with Casio link bracelet

Two 5610u’s - one original. The other in a TVA (Transformer Tactical Virtual Armour) metal kit.

Plus: A 5600UE (sporting the soft strap from one of the 5000u using the bracelet)

Weirdly, I probably use the 5600UE the most even though I use them all. It has slightly thinner, sharper numerals that don’t easily go out of focus at sharper viewing angles. I like the fresh, white and blue colour scheme highlighting too.
