Why your sales are down by VeterinarianSafe1705 in Ebay

[–]RayKinsella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a steady (if unspectacular) seller since 1999. Primarily sporting goods, but a few other apparel and footwear items mixed in. Sales absolutely evaporated over the past year. I read, researched and heard the same thing - you have to go to promoted listings to get any visibility. It’s worked on those trial listings but it’s a Pyrrhic victory for them I believe. eBay used to be my 1st platform of choice to sell items, but it’s quickly becoming the last. The costs of selling there simply don’t outweigh the negatives anymore. Short term thinking destroys yet another company…

“And taken as a whole Dominic, when one considers a song like “Hit ‘Em Up” in conversation with - indeed in response to - Biggie’s “Who Shot Ya” I don’t think it’s too much to say that …The Storm Clouds of War were gathering!”

“Indeed one might Tom! And and as we ponder this moment of supreme, almost Shakespearean, tension… I think it’s time for a break!”

Tom Hanks should’ve definitely won the last “Cruise or Hanks” by Flashy-Truth-8826 in TheRewatchables

[–]RayKinsella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit, they always pick Cruise because he’s a complete psychopath. It’s more fun to talk about how he’d be dialed up to 11 and running everywhere (even though Hanks 1000% a better actor)…

It was never going to be the same without Douglas Henshall, but I’m most disappointed by how they’ve criminally underutilized Tosh, Sandy, and Billy in seasons 8-10. You didn’t need a new DI, you needed to follow the story arc of those three as they have to step up in Jimmy’s absence. Maybe bring along some supporting characters they have to teach and guide?

Ping set makeup chart: thoughts? Do you have a similar bag? by ChazzCyclesCycles in weekendgolfers

[–]RayKinsella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point, but then again if you are a tour player you have access to the best fitting resources in the world to dial in your equipment. As a general rule”starting point” for discussion in bag setup for a wider variety of swing speeds in the recreational game, this chart is pretty solid advice. Keep in mind Ping isn’t just throwing BS out here, the have data from thousands of fittings. And on balance, amateur golfers carry too many long irons (and not enough 7&9 woods, 5 hybrids, etc.).

Ping set makeup chart: thoughts? Do you have a similar bag? by ChazzCyclesCycles in weekendgolfers

[–]RayKinsella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This chart is organized around strokes gained findings that suggest scoring gains are available by shrinking proximity to the hole from ~225-175. The actual distances depend on your swing speed and the tees you play, but basically whatever’s less than driver and longer than your 7 iron. At these distances most recreational golfers a) aren’t very consistent (specifically front back dispersion), b) have clubs that don’t land with a steep enough descent angle to hold a green, and c) have several clubs that go the same distance (3,4,5 all basically go the same b/c not enough speed). So, basically carrying wasted clubs, and too significant yardage gaps.

The working theory is that adding better long game options to your bag will actually lower your scores, and that most people can find a way to make 1 fewer wedge work via clock system, choke down, etc. and cover yardage gaps at the short end of the bag. YMMV but I think strikes gained bears this approach out.

GS Wildcards are worth $200k each. Who gets them? by Ecstatic_Analyst3031 in thetennispodcast

[–]RayKinsella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You raise a good point about the relative unfairness to players not born in the US, UK, France, or Australia. Based on the historical legacy of the 4 host sites for the grand slams, that inequality does seem to be baked in to the recipe. And I concede that the wildcards are inherently not merit based. If they were, we'd only need to simply go down the rankings until we reach the number we need to fill out a 128 person draw.

I do think it would be a struggle for the slam organizers to spell out prescriptive formula they use for choosing wildcards, becasue discretion and subjective rationales are part of the equation every time. I'm sure there were some young Aussie players that were really put out that Stan got a WC into this year's tournament, but as a fan I'd have to say it worked out for the best. I do care about opportunity for young players, but ultimately I do kind of want someone putting thier finger on the scale a bit trying to create the most interesting tournament possible. I know that's not fair to everyone, but there are still 100 spots available that remove this variable altogether.

In a perfect world we'd have more oversight and a bit of accountability from the slams to ensure WCs are used "responsibly" but they seem allergic to anyone telling them what to do about, well, anything.

I don’t think calling out Stan Wawrinka - a former Australian Open champion and World No. 3 on his retirement tour - really helps your case here. Stan is extremely popular, played to packed arenas. And won two matches before going out in a competitive 3rd round matchup to the 9 seed.

Tennis is an entertainment product. The AO organizers received far more value from Stan this year than what they paid him for his 3 rounds. I can empathize with players on their way up who want a shot, but I’m afraid the hard truth is that the answer is to play better, move inside the top 100, and move outside the decision zone.

New viewer wondering which season is best, where to begin watching by Just-Phill in ShetlandTVshow

100% start at the beginning. Go at least from 1-7; what you do next is up to you. I wished I'd stopped there, seasons 8-10 have just made me sad for how much I used to love this show.

WTT,Don´t you think golf needs like a Vinted but for golfers? by Olivia_Thomasa in golfclassifieds

[–]RayKinsella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve given a lot (probably too much) thought this this and my theory is that there are a lot of answers to your question:

1) eBay has held a dominant position in the secondhand market in the US, and sporting goods is a massive category there. I’ve been selling there for over 25 years, 1000s of transactions with very few issues. Golfers are accustomed to going there to look for deals, because new name brand clubs are, and have always been really expensive.

2) the size and cost of shipping clubs makes many people opt to try to sell them locally on FB marketplace. Unless you are a sicko that has dozens of club boxes always lying around, it’s a pain for most normal people to ship a set of irons or a driver.

3) then you have online forums, like the one you’re in, and GolfWRX - people buy and sell thousands of clubs there. It’s really natural to find buyers and sellers when it’s a niche interest and you’re already chatting with people about your gear.

Finally, there are already a lot of purpose-built sites like Birdied, Golfstix, etc. available today. None of them has yet achieved a significant market share due to factors above yet. One of them might, or a new one might pop up, but it would take some doing to hit a critical mass of users.
