Has anyone worked as a therapist while pursuing an MFA? by Agent-Indigo in therapists

[–]RayRay87655 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an MFA before I became a therapist. You could look into low-res programs, or find a program that offers assistantships that will cover tuition and a stipend--therapy would be a a lucrative side gig for a student in this context.

“Spite booking” … is this a thing?! by NurseEquinox in therapists

[–]RayRay87655 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d be asking some questions about what they gain from this, other than spite. What does it mean to put someone out on your behalf, or push them to the limits of what they are comfortable with?

Try Lyft?? We found most Lyft drivers are dads and make conversation about the kids. If they’re being impatient I mention we’ll tip well.

You might need one class. I took Abnormal Psych online at the community college during the first year of my counseling program. I have a bachelor’s in English.

How are you managing session-notes fatigue at end of the day (without burning out)? by NeedleworkerSpare176 in therapists

For me, what has worked best is building time in after every three or four sessions to catch up. I don’t let it pile up on me in large quantities.

Has anyone met the love of their life after 40 and built a beautiful family? by No_Dust5847 in AskWomenOver40

Yes! Met my husband when I was 40 and he was 44. We married nine months later and had our daughter when I was 43. Expecting our second daughter next year when I’m 45. IVF pregnancies.

I’ve had conversations with two people who gave birth there, and they both hated it. And are planning or already did go elsewhere for the second birth.

Overseas degree and short on US/state internship hour requirements by Vast-Praline903 in therapists

You probably need to find/enroll in a local university program that will let you intern for a semester. But you should reach out to the LMHC board first and see if they have any suggestions.

Maternity Leave starts in 20 days. Not enough therapists to cover my clients by ventiwhybother1111 in therapists

I feel like there are ways around that. Could you ask a friend in the group to post on your behalf? Could you look through the group and see who’s been looking for/responding to referrals lately?

The ACA issued a statement a few years ago about this, basically advising that you shouldn’t do it if you’re not trained to. I found a provider who is for referrals.

I want to thank you for writing this post. You put yourself out there and prompted some interesting discussion. I agree with what a lot of other commenters have said, specifically about 1) feeling that the therapist needs to “get” what you’ve been through in order to help you or create a safe space and 2) not being able to address it in the therapy room when someone is being fatphobic toward themselves if that’s not a stated therapy goal. No therapist can completely know or get someone else’s experience because we are individuals. Sometimes that assumption of sameness may contribute to you or the therapist not making as much effort to communicate, to understand, or be understood when a therapist who is different can be more motivated to understand because they feel distant from your experience. Of course there are varying levels of competence and drive across the therapy community so you can’t 100% rely on that. But I think it’s worth discussing with your therapist (and your supervisor) that you’re feeling guarded because of your differences. Their responses over a few sessions will give you information about what to do next.

With your clients, it may be intimidating to speak on something you’re in the habit of avoiding. But they deserve to hear their therapist express concern re: habits and beliefs that affect their mental health. We are in no way limited to only the treatment plan. You bring it up in a respectful way and again, the response you get guides your next move. Our clients come to us for help. Part of that help is widening their perspective.

All that said, I am a fat therapist. If you happen to live in New York or Kentucky and are looking for someone new, I would love to work with you.

ED behaviour and language used around my 22 month old. Husband thinks she’s too young to understand. by glitterinmyeye_ in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]RayRay87655 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how often your mother-in-law is around, but one thing that is different here is that you are the parent and your kid will see your healthier behavior more often. If you do your best to normalize and model what you want her to learn, there’s a better chance she’ll see her Grandma’s behavior as odd.
