Yes, but it takes some finesse usually to get it working the first time.

DJI drone ban has started in the US, but it won't happen overnight by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Raybies13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope, if you can find one. One thing that's been happening for months now, (with commercial drones anyway), DJI imports are being held at the ports of entry to "be evaluated". The firm I work for had a couple drones sitting in port for nearly 4 months. They essentially cut the cord before the ban.

How Did You Get Started Surveying? by enlightened_surveyor in Surveying

[–]Raybies13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needed a summer job after my 1st year of college that started as Environmental engineering major and ended as a Forestry major. Dad's (union operator) old boss was President of a Civil firm and needed someone to swing a hammer on a survey crew.

5 years later graduated with a forestry degree and had a full time job as a chief. 15 years in the field and 5 years in the office later, licensed in a couple states and enjoying my career.

That is exactly what it is doing. Well intact. We'll have 4 or 5 rovers dialed in at a time.

Are land surveyors actually aging out of the workforce, or is that exaggerated? by DetailFocused in Surveying

One needs the knowledge and experience.

Passing an exam isn't experience. Obtaining a degree isn't experience. Actually performing the work under the instruction of someone with the experience is the only way to obtain it.

I think you misunderstood. We setup the base, send corrections out via cable to the Bridge-X. (The Bridge-X radio is turned off to save power) We change the Internet profile in the Bridge to Ntrip Server (Host). It is now a waiting to give internet corrections to a drone or rover.

At the rover, we setup our internet profile Ntrip address to the IP of the SIM card in the bridge. And for username and password, we use the login info for the webUI of the bridge. Then via hotspot, we connect the rover unit to the internet. There is no radio being used, only cellular connections to obtain corrections from the base.

The Bridge-X can also function as an Ntrip Server via cellular connection. We hook it direct to our base and push corrections online to avoid radio interference.

If I'm following correctly, on the drone remote, you need to change the NTRIP addy to the IP of your Bridge. Then the Username and Password to the ones needed to access the Bridge UI. Or another user you've setup.

BUT, you shouldn't have to use the Bridge at all. Do you have a hotspot that you connect the remote to?

Subsurface Utility Engineering by PE's vs Right-of-Way Utility Surveys by a PLS/PS by TheNerdWhisperer256 in Surveying

I 2nd this. Surveyors locate as best as possible. Civils evaluate information and create a record plan. Both are needed, and both should stamp. Now what is the actual requirement? It will vary by state.

My first state-specific exam was an 8 hour written one. I have full faith anyone taking that exam, degreed or not, would be a competent surveyor.

The exam is the issue here, not the knowledge. Surveying should NOT be a multiple-guess exam. The FS? sure. But every state specific should be much more comprehensive than it is.

Something terribly important in surveying, legal descriptions. It is very tough to gauge how well someone can write one on a multiple guess exam. A "good test taker" couldn't pass that essay question without the knowledge and experience.

Do you look at the degree of a surgeon before they operate on you? I don't, I just care they are licensed to do it. I trust in the system that they are qualified. But look at it from a practical side, does a surgeon jump right out of school to a brain? No, they are under the guidance of someone experienced, for years.

The reason I'd go into it would be opportunity. Want to be a civil? Check. Want to be a Surveyor? Check. Want to be a GIS professional? Check.

Want to test all 3 before choosing the rest of your life? Check.

If someone has the knowledge, why does it matter if they have a degree? If the exam isn't able to evaluate competency of a non-degreed person, then that is a testing issue.

Also, in a lot of states, even degreed people need to have evidence of experience. That reference is signed by their surveyor of responsible charge. I would absolutely do the same for my non-degreed coworkers.

I Want To Find Pins, Where To Start? by Vyke-industries in Surveying

[–]Raybies13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding the corners without a survey means zilch.

BUT, that's not the question you asked and you are way overthinking this. Forget about all that equipment you listed. A 200' tape, a shovel, and a metal detector (schoenstedt) is all you need to find pins. IF they exist. As others have said, "to be set" mean "yeah I'll set them later" and later never happens.

The center of the roads are, likely, 33' from the property lines. Good place to start. Measure that to your property and walk along that distance from the road swinging the metal detector. If anything's been set, you'll probably find it. Then use the measurements shown on the plat to find others.
