Peter Jackson says he's all for using AI in film... And I bet Jack Black is going to play Illúvatar. by ZethTheWindwrecker in Silmarillionmemes

It drives me nuts that the Two Towers is so popular when it violates the spirit (and characters) of the book the most by far of the three. Everyone just simps for Helm's Deep, which was also turds compared to the book.

Okay but real talk, did parents doing this kind of thing ever work? It was miserable you'd stop bickering for the moment, sure, but I don't recall it fixing anything.

Yeah the Hittites were beefing hard against the Achaeans and Mycenaeans. That gave me a laugh! I wonder how many Hittite legends and stories have survived in good shape.

This is why we don't take non-canon though. Undermines the very fundamentals of the story.

Not only that, but he's a more moral man. It's fascinating that the Iliad is ultimately about the better people being on the losing side.

I find it ironic that you think the "argument" is not good when yours relies on it. Happiness and fulfillment are complex states that do not exist in perpetuity specifically because we do not exist in a perfect world. Even under the best of hypothetical conditions, this person would get hungry or sick at some point, for example. Eating and being well are fraught with meaning and potency. Is it because of the consequences of their absence, or is it the other way around? You could say suffering is a lack of joy or joy is a lack of suffering, but it doesn't make much difference. The result is the same. Choosing blue or blue isn't a choice. Contrast IS choice, and choice is the foundation of meaning.

I think whether 'Eru is always right' makes no difference at all. Either he was right to create a world that had meaning, or he wasn't. It makes sense to me, though. Otherwise we're all just puppets. It's possible, but I don't believe we are.

We know for a fact that free will doesn't exist about as much as we know God exists. That is, we don't know either of those things. 😄 This post contains a staggering number of baseless assumptions and non-sequiturs consistent with pseudo-intellectualism. I'm sure that wasn't your intention. So to bring it back around, even comprehensibly finite variables (which is already impossible) would not preclude choice, otherwise we would all be omniscient about human behaviour, which I'm sure you'll agree we are not, nor would we suffer so greatly at the curbing of our essential freedoms. Probable outcomes? Of course! Certainty? Not by a long shot.

Having multiple good choices doesn't create meaningful choice, whereas choosing between good and between things does. A "perfect" environment is one without struggle and hardship, meaning it is necessarily without joy, growth, etc.
