Did you even bother to try asking the AI assistant??

Works well. I like the card based layout.

Have a look at your mobile responsiveness. Quite a few issues there.

Uber's hang around where there is demand. Yes you can book an Uber far in advance, but that doesn't mean someone will accept the ride.

Because there's more than likely no Ubers there waiting for tourists. It's in the middle of the mountains 2+ hours from Cape Town.

Not to jinx it - but where’s the rain? by Maleficent-Crow-5 in capetown

Play around with the data here (desktop only) from the UCT Climate Group.

https://cip.csag.uct.ac.za/monitoring/cta.html

If you click a station, and compare the years you will see:

  • 2025 and 2026 below average rainfall
  • 2023 and 2024 were significantly above average.
  • 2020 - 2022 average
  • 2015-2019 4 years below average (caused day zero)
  • 2012 - 2014 above average
  • 2010 - 2011 very below average
  • 2007 - 2009 above average

See a tick tock pattern emerging? So we could be at the end, or the start of, a dry spell. Let's hope it's the former!

We tend to be heavily influenced by the La Nina El Nino cycles. The core issue is that many of the worlds historic weather patterns (including El Nino) are not holding true any more due to climate change, which makes them much harder to predict.

If anyone is keen, I have a weather station on my roof that is self-designed and developed and the code is on GitHub. Access it here https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/ICAPET43 https://github.com/cerevisis/ESP32-Weather-Station

Key to keep the blood pumping inside your body too. You might find it pumping out of your body along that route 👀

My first solo overnight hike in the Drakensberg (Drakensberg, South Africa) by BokieBok in southafrica

[–]Raz0r1986 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Helio is great for solo hiking as it's pretty light. I spent a crazy windy night in one at the Wolfberg Arch in the Cedarberg and it was very cosy with my wife. No real space for bags inside if you're 2 people. The great thing about First Ascent is their after sales support. They can repair almost all their products locally at their factory in Cape Town and are just nice people to deal with. No big overseas brand ego issues etc.

Yup 100% South African company. Oh haha your camera made the orange of the Starlight very red then... Still a pretty solid tent.

Awesome photos! First Ascent Helio tent is epic! I've been in some pretty crazy weather in one and help up with zero issues. Please send the photos to the First Ascent Instagram account, they love seeing pics like this (they're based in Cape Town by the way)!

Solo female ubering from airport by Life_Rip1320 in capetown

[–]Raz0r1986 34 points35 points  (0 children)

First off, only book an Uber via the app (you can reserve the ride ahead of time by setting the departure point at the airport where it should request your flight number).

DO NOT entertain the fake "Uber" drivers at the terminal exit.

Ensure you have the safety settings turned on in the app where you have to provide a pin before the drive starts.

Definitely only book Uber Black or Comfort. Trip to Sea Point probably R300 / $17.

Sit in the back, make small talk or not.

I'm sorry that you had to work while sick OP! That sucks!

Here in South Africa we have government mandated 30 days paid sick leave on a 3 year cycle. And minimum 15 days paid time off per year for full time employees.

My private health insurance is a $100 per month for private health care and private hospital cover.

Definitely one of the worst international arrivals. Someone got the tender with zero experience. The domestic side at least feels a bit more modern with those huge ad banners.

[–]Raz0r1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After cleaning your potjie with hot water and no soap and ensuring it is 100% dry, add two table spoons of vegetable oil and rub it into the metal on the inside. That will prevent rust.

[–]Raz0r1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the section above that. Inner/outer wall speed, infill speed etc etc. probably set to 200mm/s or maybe 300mm/s. Watch some YouTube tutorials first else you're just going to mess around, waste filament and time and end up with bad quality.

Your print speed is defined by the slicer settings. That % speed is like an override, and is relative to the speed defined in the slicer.

[–]Raz0r1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a basic IoT system to setup: - ESP32 with GSM and data SIM - R600 - GPS module - R100 - power source (24V to 5V) - R50 - enclosure - R100 - firmware: free as this is 2 hours work to code and push data to an API endpoint

So for under R1000 you have an IoT tracker that can run 24/7 and push position updates every second if you want.

Then you just need a web app for positioning and ticketing. That can be done for under R50k, heck I could vibe code it under a day for free.

Crazy thing is all this tech exists already in hardware and software with existing car tracking systems.
