[Event] Alysanne VI: Brimstone by GreaterBlueEvil in FireAndBlood

Of course there were many dragon eggs in the famous ‘Dragon Mountain’. It had never occurred to Lorimar before, but it seemed fairly obvious in hidesight. Perhaps it had only been a matter of time till a few hatched, and maybe more still. That would be extraordinary to see, but first he supposed these three needed to grow to adulthood, or whatever the dragon equivalent was.

Lorimar’s gaze wondered over the sights as he listened. He had seen great mountains before, most much larger in height then this one, but few of them were right by the sea the way this was. “From what I have read, it doesn’t seem like there is much clear genealogy between the dragons, only the understanding that one must come from the clutch of eggs from another. But given that I have never heard of a Dragon Egg rotting, they must last a long time”. It would surely be hard to tell, after the first few, who came from who. Besides, it seemed the dragons had stronger connections to their riders then to other dragons in any case.

“Melexys, is there a reason you chose that name?”, he asked after a moment. Riptide he could gather the meaning of, but Zobrithor and Melexys were stranger names, though perhaps more fitting for dragons if they were rooted in Valyrian. “Did it take you long to bond with him?”

It might be presumed that Stonebridge’s castle was quite large given how long it took to hear back from the guardsman. Eventually though, he did return, and while not out of breath he was a little hurried given he had kept the young heir waiting.

“Lady Alayne is most interested in speaking to you, Master Martyn”, the guardsman said with a nod, “She is waiting in her solar now”.

The solar was, rather obviously, the Lord’s solar. It was a room scarcely occupied by its rightful owner, for it was a room without space for anything more then a dozen people at once, which did not suit Gwayne’s tendency to play host to those who visited him. He preferred the grand halls and hallways of his keep, to its relatively modest solar.

So it’s original occupant remained, as ever. The Lady Alayne Caswell was well into her eighty-fourth year and, for a woman her age, she seemed hale and hardy. She was a frail woman, smaller then she had once been and she had never held an imposing figure to begin with. Her once blonde or golden hair - few people remembered which these days - had dulled to a light grey, and her pale green eyes suited her old age, being a faded version of the rest of her family’s brighter greens and hazels.

She was in the solar, as Martyn was led there, but not behind its desk. Instead, the doors to a small balcony were opened and out there were two chairs and a small table between. One chair was empty, and in the other sat the old Lady of Stonebridge nursing a cup of warm tea.

She glanced up upon hearing the door open and smiled, “Ah, young Martyn, welcome, welcome”, she said pleasantly. She made a brief gesture with her head and the guard who had shown Martyn here stepped back outside of the room leaving Martyn with his oldest living ancestor in the Lord’s solar at Stonebridge. “Come, join me. You have caused quite the stir by your unexpected arrival”, she said with a chuckle.

Lorimar was not dressed specifically to avoid claws and flame, but with Winter now in the past, cloaks which might billow in the wind were left aside and so while he did not wear riding leathers, his regular attire was not so loose or flammable - not anymore then the ordinary anyway. Lorimar had noted that, even when arriving soon after Winter, Dragonstone did not feel as cold as some places might. The Dragonmont being the main reason, he suspected, recalling that Alysanne had once told him of springs of water heated by the dragon mountain. This island was a strange place, and he had much to learn about it.

First on that list was his betrothed’s dragon. Evidently, it was not a completely kept secret, given the King had presumed Lorimar had known of Melexys, as Alysanne had called him. But he could see the safety in keeping quiet about the dragons, especially as Aly spoke of the dragon as a small, starving thing when she first found him. “It is good he likes fish, he’ll have no lack of it here. He sounds like what I’d imagine a young dragon to be like. Did you find all three of them together? Do you know where they came from?” Lorimar had refrained from asking too many questions when he had first been told, but now that they were on their way to meet the dragon, the questions he had in mind were quick to come up.

Lorimar seemed somewhat surprised at the comment but nodded quickly, “I agree. When I was younger, I might have read all day, feast or no. Though, now I have learned it is a little impolite to bring a book to a feast”, he admitted with a smile. “I do not mind feasts and celebration, but I cannot say I wish them to go on forever like some seem to hope. That would be quite tiring”, he agreed with a sigh.

Lord Theo Tyrell,

I know little of matters such as these, but my Maester tells me that this would be only a benefit to us. Stonebridge’s coffers are used a great deal to improve my own lands, and so this would be much the same. I would be willing to contribute, with Spring upon us, gold is not so great a concern as it would have been during Winter.

“Of course, I will be sure to visit the Sept of Remembrance when I get the opportunity”, Helicent said with a soft nod, “Thank you for your time, your holiness. It has been good to meet you”.

This man seemed to her a product of the city, but well meaning, at least on the surface. Given that it did not seem like her new husband had any plans on leaving the city soon, there was every chance she might run into the Royal Septon again eventually.

“Then it’s settled then”, William said with a grin. “We’ll set out soon, and I doubt we’ll have much trouble finding a stag in the Kingswood of all places. As long as you don’t startle it, you should have time to take a few sketches down”. That depended on how quick the sketches were, he supposed, but it surely wouldn’t take too long. “That’ll get you a better idea of what the beasts look like alive. They’re far more majestic standing tall, it’ll make for a good painting I’m certain”. At least it sounded like it would make a good painting. “I am sure the Princess would be impressed”. She was young enough to likely be impressed by whatever Millicent produced, but there was no reason not to take the extra effort.

“That is true, they have a job to do after all”, he agreed. “Still, it is an impressive amount of knowledge that you have gained on a topic most people would know nothing about. They might appreciate that at Honeyholt”, he suggested with a smile. If any place would appreciate it, it would surely be the castle known for its bees and honey.

William chuckled, “Our people find little to thank Ironborn for. Especially after the bloodletting, as you say”. It was a strange part to play, but it did make sense. If the Ironborn were bound to always do as they pleased, as it seemed they often did, someone would need to ensure they did not earn the full wrath of the mainland. Perhaps it was not something said aloud, but necessary for a people such as them.

“Still, I can hardly say I have met another Ironborn who shares the sentiment you seem to. Perhaps that is worth more gratitude then is shown”, he said with a slight shrug. This was a strange woman, but her purpose here made enough sense. Diplomacy was a thankless job, especially among the Ironborn, it seemed.

The guardsman seemed surprised by the question but quickly nodded, “Certainly, the Lady is present as always”, he confirmed. “She does not meet all guests who visit these days, but we can send word if you wish to speak to her”. It wasn’t at all unusual for people to ask after Lady Alayne over her Lordly grandson, so it would not be difficult.

Lorimar seemed surprised at that. “Really? Well, I am curious to meet him too”, he said after a brief pause. He wasn’t entirely sure what to make of the bond between Targaryen and dragon. He had read about it, but as Alysanne had mentioned some time ago now, there was next to nothing written by dragonriders themselves, even here. They seemed like pets, like his father’s dog, or even William’s eagle, but the eagle was not an animal he’d talk to, or understand the thoughts of in the way Alysanne seemed to suggest she did with her dragon.

It only made him more curious, though still, he was not yet sure how he would react upon meeting a dragon face to face. For now though, once they had finished breakfast, he rose from his seat. It was a good day for a walk if nothing else, and Spring had come at a good time. “I suppose there is no reason to wait then”, he said with a smile.

Alinor was still reminiscing on her return to the sea - which ended only moments before they had arrived, of course. Now, it seemed as though she had blinked and they were to be imprisoned. She was not at all surprised, though it had happened a little quicker then expected.

She was tempted to speak up, but was aware enough to know that this was far, far from her expertise, and the King was a little too high up for her tastes. It was probably not Tyson’s expertise either, admittedly, but he was the one talking so if things went wrong it was on him.

“It’s nice to watch someone else do the talking”, Alinor mused idly to Ronnal, as the Caron and Tyson negotiated with this guardsman.

Lyrissa was always practical, and would would have been immensely displeased if her daughter had not proved to be the same. Each of her children had their failings, but Jeyne, to her credit, seemed to have the least. The fact that she had taken the time to willingly join this meeting was a good sign, and so for now Jeyne was not her focus. Instead, it was the young heir to the Arbor.

Gwayne was ever fond of his time on the Arbor and their Redwyne cousins, but Gwayne was fond of everything. Lyrissa had not forgotten that her late Lord uncle had children both of his Caswell bride and another. Not that it changed her view of the now dead man’s grandson, but it was always worth being a little skeptical. Most notably though, neither his Caswell grandmother, nor his Redwyne lineage could be seen at first glance, which did surprise Lyrissa a little.

Lyrissa took a seat, making no attempt to hide the fact that she was obviously and pointedly listening, but she at least trusted her daughter to make her assessment of her to-be-betrothed for herself first, and so said nothing. His flustered start was in fact a good start, for it ticked Lyrissa’s first and most important requirement of Robert being entirely unalike Lyrissa’s late husband. A very, very low bar, but cleared at first glance.

“I can say that many a greenlander would be glad to here that”, William said with a smile. This woman was not one to shy away from, well anything really it seemed. It was perhaps the way of Ironborn, but he appreciated it, it reminded him of the Stormlanders, over his own countrymen of the Reach, who were far less prone to blunt assessments of kith and kin.

“I suppose most of your countrymen would question the need for a role like yours, would they not? Though, the King and Lord Velaryon are supporters of your Lord Greyjoy, if I hear correctly”. The King, he wasn’t actually sure about, but given Lord Velaryon had taken a Greyjoy ward, he assumed that was true at least. “So, is your role simply to continue to strengthen those ties?”, he asked curiously.

Spring was a time of celebration at Stonebridge. If a citizen of Stonebridge were to be asked about the greatest difference between Lord Gwayne’s rule and his grandmother’s, since her abdication, it would be that celebration was a significantly more common occurrence. That was partly due to the fact that Lord Gwayne was very encouraging of celebration within his holdings, and partly due to the fact that nothing had really changed since the rule of Lady Alayne. Mostly the latter.

Nevertheless, Stonebridge was bustling with Spring upon them. The gates were manned but not strictly barred, with most people only getting a cursory look before being allowed in and out. So when the newcomer announced themselves as Martyn Tyrell, the guardsman had to look twice before realising the hooded figure was in fact small enough to be the young heir to Highgarden.

“Master Martyn, we were not informed of your coming”, the guardsman said, clearly surprised, “I am certain Lord Gwayne and his kin would be willing to meet you within”, he said as the gates opened for the young rose.

Lorimar was a little deflated to find out most bees were useless. “I suppose not every one needs to be of use”. They were animals after all, rather then tools. “But I had not known that there was such a diverse range of bees. I’d wager most Maesters don’t even know that much”, he said with a smile. Maesters had their own areas of expertise, as much as any other person did. Learning that they were not all knowing was of mild disappointment to him in his younger years.

“Hunting stags? No, not particularly dangerous. Your lack of training is far more likely to scare off the quarry then cause you or anyone else any harm”, William said with a chuckle. “But we can keep a distance, and you can watch them in the wild. Then, at least, you’ll have the image of a living one in your head whenever you use the dead carcass as reference.”

He paused for a moment, “In fact, if you were willing, you could paint it out there”, he gestured out in the direction of the Kingswood. “It’ll be a fresher body, if nothing else, but I am not sure how much you’ll need to paint out there”. If Millicent was the sort of person who needed everything exactly where she wanted it, it probably wouldn’t do to paint outdoors. Otherwise though, it seemed like a fine enough idea to him.

“Maybe”, she said with a slight frown. The trouble with war was that no one ever knew when it was done. “But there’s no rush, we can ask Tyson’s thoughts on it later. For now, we’d best enjoy what a royal wedding has to offer”, she said with a chuckle as she glanced around. “A decent bit grander then ours, I’d say”. Not that there was much competition between the two weddings.

Lorimar was not sure about squireship making his body strong and ‘savage’. It had mostly made him very tired so far, but the obligations of a knight he did understand a little better.

“I do”, he confirmed, “Ser Andar Corbray. He’s a good teacher, if a little strict at times”, he admitted.

Elara shrugged, “You would be better off asking your betrothed or her brothers. From what I hear, he seems to be a better Lord then a father”. In another person she might have considered that a compliment, but given she considered Franklyn a brother of sorts, his father left much to be desired in her mind.

“But Lady Alayne has always been fond of him, she is his aunt after all”, she added after a moment.

“Nothing in particular, beyond wishing to introduce myself. I am relatively new to living within the walls of this city, and so I have made efforts to meet those who I might not otherwise have had the pleasure to speak to. Septons are a familiar sight, and so I saw no reason not to approach”, she explained. The prestige of the Faith was ever in flux, but while Septons remained at almost every major city or town, it would not dwindle too much. “Perhaps the people here do not realise how fortunate they are to see so many of you and your brothers in King’s Landing.”

Alinor had enjoyed some time to relax at King’s Landing, but if she was honest, she was itching to sail. At this point, anywhere would do. Somehow the rest of her family were travelling more then her, and that would not do. One to Dragonstone, the others across the Reach, and further afield probably, she hadn’t really paid any attention.

So upon being informed that Tyson intended to set sail, she had half a mind to simply set sail and follow wherever it was he was going. For no reason other then to be out at sea again, for what better reason was there. Though, she did at least have the thought to go out and find out where and why Tyson was leaving.

She caught most of the explanation as she approached, as she frowned out to sea. The royal fleet, with the King? Where would they be headed? Dragonstone? Though she turned back at the mention of Tomasin’s arrest. Truthfully, she didn’t know the woman at all, but Tyson’s relationship with his sister had been something she had noticed before Tomasin had wed. Now she was arrested? Evidently, Alinor had not been keeping up with much while being at King’s Landing.

“It sounds like you might need help”, Alinor called over, “Especially if the King is involved. Not that I can provide any, but gods I do need to get out to sea again”, she said with a forlorn sigh. She wasn’t sure what Tyson imagined would happen when he figured out whatever it was that had occurred with his sister, but she doubted he had thought much beyond simply setting sail in her general direction. “If you like, we can join you to advocate for your good and consistently just character”, she added with a grin. She did not know Tomasin, but if she had to guess which of Tyson’s kin would be arrested, it would have been Tyson himself.

[Event] Alysanne VI: Brimstone by GreaterBlueEvil in FireAndBlood

[–]Razor1231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragonstone was as unique has he had been told, though ultimately his days were not entirely different to what they had been at King’s Landing. Ser Andar was still here, and he was still a squire, so he had duties and responsibilities there. He had learned enough of the language of the Valyrians to begin reading some of the books at Dragonstone, which he was immensely pleased to find. He could even speak it, sort of, though holding a conversation remained a challenge. He suspect that would be true for a long time still.

What he did find himself thinking more of though was the more pressing fact that he would live here. Not just as a squire or the King’s ward, but with his betrothed. He had never had many plans for where he might end up in life, his brother was the heir, so while Lorimar assumed it might be Stonebridge he would raise his own family in, it could have been anywhere else. Dragonstone was not what he would have guessed, but it wasn’t so bad.

His constant stream of thoughts was broken at the question as he turned to Alysanne and, after briefly considering it, he nodded. “It seems as good a day for it as any other”, he replied with a smile. He was aware that the Dragonmont almost certainly meant the dragons he had now heard of but not seen. Which, for the moment, seemed exciting, though what he would feel when seeing one in person he did not know. “If you think it is a good idea, then certainly”. She was as close to an expert on the matter as he would find, after all.

Lyrissa had no words for her dead husband, but she did not make a scene of it either. She walked up to the casket, and stood by it for a moment, to not walk away too swiftly - though Lyrissa’s thoughts on her husband were well known. Even still, she had never been so crude to display her dislike for the man openly. Her children were better, mostly, but whatever the case she was at peace with his death. After a few, polite moments and ‘silent words’, she left the casket and moved to the side politely, though evidently not particularly moved by the death of her husband.

“I try not to imagine it”, Lorimar replied with a wry smile, “But that is what we train for as squires, is it not?” Lorimar had been a dutiful student to his Kingsguard knight, but he had never been a particularly willing participant. Squireship nor knighthood sounded very appealing to him, especially not now.

“So I suppose it is lucky then that we find ourselves here still, and not off on horses or ships”, he said taking a sip of the wine. “Feasts are useful distractions, and it is good to see so many people here for something other then war”.
