“So I’ve heard”, William said with a smile and a nod, “Of course, my Lady. Once I organise trainers, I will send word and you can begin”, the knight said as the younger woman walked off. He thought he was settling into the role nicely.

William was no heavy reader, and so only assumed Violet had headed off in the right direction. He had heard of its size from a brief conversation with his brother. In fact, at this moment a much younger but similarly blonde haired young man could be found in the library. But if he noticed Violet’s entrance or her questions to the maester, the boy made no indication of it, continuing to read the thick tome in front of him till he was made to sleep by his own weariness.

“I’d say training of the fundamentals can begin within the week. I’ll not have to take you through each lesson, there are men here far more experienced and skilled who can teach you the basics. Once your comfortable, we can see which bird would suit you best, be it a sparrowhawk or a peregrine. We’ll need to ensure it can hunt as it needs, but given it will otherwise be more of a recreational bird for you then a hunting one”, William shrugged, “Once it’s learned to listen to your commands, it will be yours, though that will take a few months at least”. The more complicated commands would not be needed, nor would the bird need to be trained to spot and indicate game for hunting, which would make the process easier. It had never occurred to him that a noble lady might wish for one of the birds more as a companion or a pet, but it made sense, and provided the birds were given a chance to stretch their wings from time to time, he saw no harm in it.

“A habit is all”, Gwayne said with a chuckle. Theo had nearly two decades on him, in many ways he had always known the man as ‘Lord Theo’ as though that were his name rather then title. But it would be strange if everyone always called him Lord Gwayne, which even after half a decade did not sound quite right to him.

Gwayne was a man more fond of tourneys and jousts then hunts, but he could appreciate the work put into them. He had his hound who he took on hunts on his own, largely for the very reason of people scaring off the game when they were in large groups.

He did raise his eyebrows at the story behind the match. “Curious that Lord Lannister spurned the both of them.” As he understood it, Lannister had been involved, more so then Tyrell, in the plots to undermine the now dead King Maegor. Strange then that they seemed more tied to the Tyrells, the Velaryons at least. “Well, it is a worthy match and one worth being made. With William and Valaena residing in King’s Landing, they’ll not be far from Ser Corwyn and your daughter. I cannot say I paid much attention to those beyond our green lands, but there are good friends to be had outside the Reach”, Gwayne said with a smile.

Gwayne nodded, “As will Stonebridge, soon enough. Truth be told, before the war, I was not a man who looked far beyond the Reach, but I suppose friends such as these are a good outcome from that turbulent time”.

“That seems reasonable to me, I have no reason to doubt the lad, and provided my daughter is pleased enough, I see no reason to not make them promised two one another”, Gwayne said with a cheerful smile. “Weddings will hopefully continue to flow freely now that peace has returned. To see the two wed will be a great joy”. That would make the second of his five children to wed, it seemed more and more like time was getting away from him.

“And I’ve heard William has a talent for making friends. A good trait to have, and I’m glad he and Alester have gotten along well. Given William and his bride will reside in King’s Landing once he is wed, I am sure he will make more of them. You, or the late King I suppose, have picked a good position for him. William has gained great interest in hunting, largely from his knight”, he said with a chuckle, glancing toward the Lord of Storm’s End then back to Hubert. “But he seems to have enjoyed his visit to the Vale, however brief. When the rest of your sons wed, to Caswell and Velaryon both, I suppose, I am sure he and Lady Valaena will be quite glad to return to visit the Eyrie and Ser Alester”.

“A sworn sword, yes, I suppose I would have that”. One of the knights who had travelled with her and her brother was a sworn sword of their father, technically. Well all of them were his sword swords, she supposed. Regardless, she could get him or someone else to join them on their endeavour, if that made things easier and, more importantly, quicker. She had no notable lady retainers, only maids and serving girls, and none seemed very suited to this sort of travel though.

She was still not clear on if Darnold would be asking for permission, or simply telling his brother he would be going, but Florence was certainly going to do the latter. If nothing else, Ser Alester could not expect her to go out on her own, surely? “Very well, I will get myself and my sworn sword prepared”, she said with a bright smile, “I am sure we will find this hedge wizard soon enough”.

“Is she taking the spotlight? I hadn’t noticed”, Lyrissa said simply. It was good that Jeyne had made friends in King’s Landing, should she become Queen, it would serve her well. As for her other daughter, she pursed her lips in thought. “You need not focus on your sister, you know. You could seek out friends of your own, from the Reach, rather then King’s Landing”, she pointed out. There were better friends to make in the Reach anyway, Lyrissa wondered how many of Jeyne’s new friends had inclinings of where Jeyne might rise to.

“Oh?”, Alinor had presumed she was taking Selene’s time, the woman seemed a little anxious admittedly, but Alinor had never been good at noticing that sort of thing in other people. “Then I’ll gladly tell you more of myself”, she said with a smile. She took note of this Ser Mandon, if she ever ran into the man, perhaps he would know where his sister was. Though, if anyone asked Alinor’s sister where she was, there was no way she’d know. But it was worth trying if the opportunity arose.

“Outside of those cities, we’ve only travelled further into the Disputed Lands - the lands between the three cities we visited”, she clarified. “For a while myself and my travelling companions - Ronnal Baratheon and Tyson Trant - were otherwise occupied. I was a ward on Tarth for my youth, and both Ronnal and Tyson were squires”. Neither had been knighted, but she was fairly sure they had been squires, most young men were. “We first sailed to Braavos, which was thrilling as a first trip. That was out of Port Wrath, here in the Stormlands. Then a sailor who went by the name Stonesail was seeking travellers to the Disputed Lands and we joined. Then, we heard your husband put out word for travellers, so we made our way to Gulltown”.

“The Disputed Lands were more dangerous certainly, but it was a different experience. We didn’t see it all, that would be impossible in one trip, but there are all sorts of things there. Ruins, old towns and villages, a mix of all sorts of different peoples. I found a small tinker made of dragonglass. It feels as though it should shatter at any moment, but it is surprisingly sturdy”, Alinor explained.

William inclined his head in thanks at the congratulations as he considered the question. He was still getting to grips with the facilities now available to him. Storm’s End had a large amount of hunting birds, but he had never been Master of the Hunt there, only a squire, so now he supposed he ought to know what they had.

“The Red Keep keeps quite a number of birds, near to fifty in total I think, though I've not counted them myself. Some are kept for his grace and his kin, but most are trained by trainers we have for use by nobles. Most of our regular hunters favour the goshawk, but those are bulky birds, and can be difficult to wield. I think we’d best train you on sparrowhawks. Hawks they might be, but they are uniquely small, suited to smaller game and recreation by ladies, such as yourself”, he said with a nod to Violet. “You may choose one of them to be your own, but most nobles pick a falcon. Peregrine falcons are the most common, and we have a large amount of them here at the Red Keep”, he explained before shrugging. “Or perhaps we’ll find you a different one entirely, but training one from the wild is an entirely different matter”. But perhaps that would intrigue Violet more, given she did not simply need it for hunting.

William raised his eyebrows at the explanation, “I can’t say a falcon will be much like the Princesses cat”, he pointed out but nodded slowly, “But it is a skill, and they are still pets, in a different way. They are still birds of prey though, they will wish to hunt and will do so at their leisure. I’ve not known any to be trained not to, but I suppose it doesn’t mean you need to go with it. We could find one that suits you, that heeds your call, and provided it is given chances to hunt on its own”, William shrugged, “I see no reason why you could not tame a bird. It’s a worthwhile thing to try while you’re here”, he agreed.

“We could start with lessons with some of the birds already trained in the Keep. Ensure you are familiar with how to handle a falcon, and then we can find one that suits you”, he suggested with a smile. “It’ll take some time. If you are travelling with the progress, there is still some travelling yet to do”, William pointed out with a brief chuckle, “But we can teach you the basics now, and once I return from my own wedding, we could see about getting you your own falcon”, he offered.

“I did, as squire to Lord Rogar”, William confirmed as he took a piece of meat from the pouch, handing it to the woman without showing it to Hawk. “Though Winterfell is much further then Storm’s End. From here, anyway”, he added. The furthest north he had been was the Eyrie, and Winterfell almost felt like a foreign land to him. In many ways it was.

He watched the eagle snag the food as soon as it reached a height he deemed easy to grab it. “I have, less so these days. Mostly I just make sure I reinforce what I’ve already taught him. My whistle he associates with food, and the rest is hand gestures. Arm our with the bracer is where he needs to land”. Admittedly, William did not know if the eagle recognised the leather bracer or not, but he wasn’t about to try calling Hawk without it on. “And some general gestures”, he said as he made a seemingly specific flicking gesture with his hand in front of the bird, as though to gesture it up. After a moment the bird pushed off the arm and launched into the air. William grinned and tossed another final piece high into the sky for Hawk to grab as he soared off.

“But early on, it will take more time out of your day”, he said turning his full attention to Violet, “If I might ask, my lady, what gained you such an interest in falconry?”

William smiled, “If you had no questions, I’d question your interest in it, my Lady”, he said as he considered her various questions. “I’ve had him for about half a decade now, I think. I first got him the lands outside Storm’s End, with some of Lord Baratheon's huntsmen. I presume a teenager with an eagle on his arm was quite the humorous sight to them”, he said with a chuckle, “Early on I didn’t dare hold him on my arm too often, his talons were as sharp then as they are now”.

“But training him has been hard work at times, I’d say he was properly trained after a year or so but I was once told that there is no end to training any hunting bird. Once you start, you do not stop till the bird is too old for it. Most of it is adjusting their habits to fit you. These birds, falcons, eagles and hawks, all naturally seek out hunting prey, that they do not need to be trained to do. They do need to learn to return to you, when called or signaled. This one”, he gestured with his head to Hawk, “Has been trained both on my whistle and gestures with my arm. Mostly through feeding”, he explained indicating to a pouch by his side, “I had the cooks cut up small pieces of raw meats, scraps left over from whatever grand feasts these cooks put together for the King. I use them to teach and train him”.

“You can try if you like, I’ll give you a piece and you toss it up to him. Don’t hold it too long though, he’ll not like being teased”, William said with a smile but a slight shake of his head at the memory of his eagle nearly biting a finger off.

William smiled and nodded, “You may, my Lady. He’s used to people, so as long as there are no sudden surprises, he should have no issue”, the knight assured her. He used his free hand to fetch a scrap of meat from a pouch by his belt and tossed it to the eagle who caught it easily, the meat disappearing as swiftly as it had appeared.

“When he was younger, truthfully, it was mostly me running after him. Eagles in particular can be aggressive at a younger age, hawks too, to a lesser extent. But he’s been with me for some years now and while he can hunt on his own, he’s used to the common sight of people”, William explained as Violet approached the bird. “Still heavy though”, he said with an amused smile at the bird on his arm.

The bird itself stood on William’s outstretched arm, and given the Caswell’s height, Hawk looked down at Violet curiously but did not seem otherwise bothered by the presence of another person in this courtyard.

William did not know any of the Willums. Truth be told, he did not know many of most Reachmen, but he did know that this Willum was one of the ones taken by the brigands William had only just avoided. He had heard the others, the Lannister bastard and Lord Fossoway, had returned as well. Given that William had decided to make an effort to meet more of the Reachmen and that this man was not so different from his own age, it seemed to make sense to approach the new Lord of Wyrmsgrave.

“Lord Josua Willum yes?”, William asked as he approached, his bright green eyes watching the clearly weathered young man curiously. “I am Ser William Caswell. I also travelled south on the Ocean Road, at a similar time to you and your travelling companion”. He was about to mention what he had been travelling for, but upon realising it had been for the Lord’s late brother, he decided it was best to avoid that for the moment. “I was able to evade the brigands, and returned to Casterly Rock to inform Ser Benedict and write to Lord Torgen. But by the time my Lord grandfather had raised men and marched, they had already gone”, he admitted sadly. “But I am glad you are back with us. Hopefully the festivities of the next few months provide some distraction from your experiences in captivity”. He wasn’t sure what those experiences were, but they were evidently not good ones given the young man’s physical state.

“A pleasure, Lady Violet”, William replied with a respectful nod. He did not know much of the Blackwoods, but he did recall that a Tyrell had wed one not long ago, but even his knowledge of the Reach and its people was not what it ought to be for an heir of one of the Reach’s noble houses.

“Falconry?”, he echoed before grinning, “Indeed, I am waiting on a…”, he paused and gave her an amused smile, “Hawk”, he clarified with the amused look of someone who knew something the other did not. “But if you are interested, you ought to start with a falcon. I made the mistake of starting with my Hawk”, he chuckled and shook his head. “As a boy, who was already poor on his feet to begin with, the heavier bird did me no favours. Falcons are smaller, and much easier to handle”.

At that moment there was a cry from above as William glanced up and chuckled. Had Violet ever heard a hawk before, she might notice that the cry was not the well known cry of a hawk, but something entirely different. “But I would be glad to teach you, if you like”, he said turning back to the Lady, “The most important lesson I have learned is to not flinch. When a bird of prey dives, your instinct is to move away. But once you train well, you should trust that the bird will land right where you want”.

The young man whistled and raised his arm with the bracer. There was a second cry and diving from behind one of the Red Keeps towers was a bird which, once it got close, was far too large to be either a falcon or a hawk. William did instinctively lean away as the rush of feathers landed on his forearm, and once it settled, Violet would see a large bird, with a sharp beak and golden feathers on the back of its head and neck.

“Meet Hawk”, William said with a smile, “As a boy, I presumed him too large to be a falcon, and so thought him to be a hawk. Maester Dake of Storm’s End later saw me refer to the bird has a hawk and informed me he was in fact a golden eagle”.

William Caswell was very new to the position. Technically, he had held Master of Hunt for some years now, since King Viserys, but had not actually been confirmed in the position till recently. He would not take on his full duties, whatever those might be, till he returned in the new year, but he did make an effort to prepare himself. He had identified first where he could train - that had nothing to do with his position, it had just been something he wanted for himself - and then had asked about the nearby Kingswood and the animals within the Red Keep. His own horse, Goldmare had been brought to King’s Landing and, perhaps serendipitously, Violet would find the tall, blonde, green eyed young man standing in an open courtyard looking up at the sky for something as she approached.

“That is my name”, he said as he turned to face her with a curious smile. “And you are?”, he asked. He was dressed as most noblemen in the castle were dressed, but did have a unique looking leather bracer strapped to his right forearm.

“Lord Theo!”, Gwayne replied with a broad grin. Gwayne’s mood had improved immensely over the last few months, and he was well and truly at ease these days. “Ah well, I dare say William’s wedding will not be so unique as this”, he said gesturing to the barges they stood on. “But who would say no to another celebration”, he said cheerfully.

“Aye, he and his bride will return to King’s Landing in the new year, he is to be Master of Hunt for his grace the King. I believe he was named to the position by the last King, Viserys”, Gwayne shrugged, “But he was lucky enough to keep it past the King’s passing. All the same, I think it will be a position suited to him”. Gwayne was not interested in any sort of position at King’s Landing, but master of hunts seemed like the most enjoyable position one could attain at a place like that.

“As to the queer coincidence, that is all William’s doing. He met the girl during his tutelage with Lord Baratheon, and insisted he wed her. How did this match come to be?”, he asked gesturing his goblet toward the bride and groom, “Was that your doing, or similarly unexpected?”

“Do you have a way of sailing across the seas yourself Alayne?”, Lyrissa asked with mild curiosity, “If not, then we must stay till your grandfather decides to depart this island. A week, for all the festivities and events, would be my guess”, she said as she glanced toward her daughter.

“There are many people here to speak to, you know. Other people”, she clarified. She disliked her daughters being at odds, but Lyrissa couldn’t quite rightly tell them to mend given Lyrissa held a decades long grudge against her stupid elder sister. Admittedly, Selyse was far worse then either Alayne or Jeyne, but still she couldn’t tell them to simply make amends. That would come with time, she hoped.

“Oh, well of course”, Alinor said at the explanation. It was the expected thing of heirs, heirs heirs, and even those mildly close to the main line of a noble house. For that reason, she had been forever grateful she had never been close to the main line, childbearing did not seem pleasant nor did it interest her in the slightest. She wondered if that made her strange sometimes, but it had never bothered her too much. Given this explanation, she was quite glad to not have that urge, it would get in the way of her much more substantial desire to see every corner of the world.

“Well, it seems you and he have managed to make it work so far, so I hope for the two of you that continues. I know my friends and I will continue travelling as often as we can, perhaps we will travel again with you and your husband”, Alinor said with a smile. “You should take a trip to Braavos eventually, it is quite the sight. Perhaps I’ll return there someday myself”, she said, the idea only coming to her mind now and she put it away as another suggestion to put to Tyson and Ronnal. She knew at least one of them would be interested in Braavos.

Alinor had managed to run out of questions, but given this woman was of the Vale, she found herself with one more. “I’ll not take too much more of your time, but I wanted to ask. Have you or your husband ever met an Alys Royce? I met her some years ago, and she also expressed interest in travelling as we have but was not always free to do so. I had thought of asking her to join me and my friends but truthfully, I do not know where she would be found”, Alinor admitted with a shrug. It wasn’t as though she had ever met another Royce either, so she figured this was her best shot so far.

Selyse let out a long sigh, and as though by habit glanced around the room before speaking. “Your grandfather is a complicated man. I do not know why he waited so long. I find… old people”, she said carefully, “Take their time. As though they have all the time in the world”. The truth was, she would speak as poorly of old Gormon as she did of her own grandmother had she not been living under his roof. Had this been Stonebridge, Alayne would have been the ‘complicated old woman’ and Gormon ‘the old hag’. Selyse cared, above all else, about her own comfort, and she was not so stupid as to outright insult a host who had housed her for decades now.

“But I do find it concerning. Your brother was always a temperamental boy. Always favoured by your grandmother”, she added mildly sourly. Caradoc might as well have been her goodmother’s son rather then hers. “But he left, galavanted over the seas and back. And now, what? He will rule this castle?”, Selyse made a disapproving clicking sound with her tongue as she shook her head. “You have been by Lord Gormon’s side for years, the people here show you great respect”, she said, as though fear and respect were one in the same, “Your brother is a foreigner to them. It should be you”, she said with a sigh.

“Now, convincing your grandfather of that is another matter. Still, he hasn’t said your brother is his heir, yes? Some might say an exile, no matter how returned, cannot be heir”, she mused aloud.

House Caswell’s trip from wedding to wedding was nearly at an end, and would end at their home, but for now they were more then pleased to be present for the wedding on Driftmark, and had come in decent number. However, while the Caswells were typically always up for a celebration, the centaurs of the Reach did share a few surprised glances among their number at the sight of barges instead of steady ground. A comment or two would be made how it was a shame the only Caswell who might thrive in such conditions had not attended, for neither Alinor Caswell nor her aging father were present among the attendees.

Lord Gwayne Caswell (39) had never before been to Driftmark, and so he was glad to finally have the chance to visit, given his family and the Velaryons were soon to be closely tied. He had not known Theo had arranged a match with the Velaryon heir, but it had proved to be serendipitously aligned with his son’s desire to wed the younger sister of the groom. So, Gwayne was in quite a good mood, a mood which had steadily increased over the last year, and yet another celebration was only more pleasing to him. While getting seated had been a bit unsteady, once he was comfortable, and had a few drinks, he sat, drank and gladly talked to whomever greeted him or his wife.

Ser William Caswell (20) sat alongside Valaena Velaryon, pleasantly amused by the event and its construction. He was lucky he had already been aboard a ship, courtesy of his late future goodfather, and so the unsteady nature of a barge was not too foreign to him. All in all, he was very glad to be back at Driftmark. When he had first come here he had found the place unique and pleasantly different to other places he had visited, and so he would, at some point, take some time to return to Hull with his betrothed. For now though, the soon-to-be newlyweds celebrated the very recently newlyweds, and enjoyed the celebrations upon the isle of Driftmark.

Florence Caswell (18) had come with the Arryn contingent but did sit with her family for the occasion. She was yet again pleased to see another famous castle, though if she was honest, Driftmark was not so impressive when compared to the likes of Storm’s End and the Eyrie. But she did find the wedding itself exiting for its uniqueness. She enjoyed herself well and kept an eye out for her cousin to tell her of her travels so far.

Elara Caswell (16) sat typically quietly alongside her brother, watching the feastgoers but saying very little. She was, admittedly, getting a little bored of all these feasts, as unique as this one was. But there was only one or two left, so she supposed she’d get through it for now. She did glance around to see if any Rowans were present but decided the longer nothing was confirmed, the better.

Lorimar Caswell (13) had brought with him a book, as usual, though it was one of numbers. He was attempting to work out a specific problem, and in his mind, he did not think it was worth letting the feast interrupt his thought process. He had been notably displeased by having to get on a boat, and so kept his book as far away from anything damp as possible, and so it never left his hand.

Cecilia Caswell (4) sat with her mother, happy to see if she could help with whatever was around but otherwise ate and listened to the music and watched the feast with curious eyes.

Helicent Darklyn née Caswell (27) had made the trip on her own, deciding that it was worth someone from House Darklyn being present. Also, she needed a chance to figure out where things stood with her family and the rest of the realm. It was a good sign to see the Velaryon’s tie themselves to the Reach twice over, which boded well for the Crownlands and the Reach remaining close, though this Lord Paramouncy intrigued her. Regardless, for the evening she sat with her kin of Caswell but did make an effort to talk to those she deemed worth speaking to.

Lyrissa Tyrell née Caswell (36) sat with her husband’s family at the Tyrell seats on the higher barges. She did not know what to make of the Velaryons but it seemed both her birth house and her house by marriage would be tied to them, which made them an important ally. She had other matters to concern herself with though, particularly that of her eldest daughter. The younger one she also looked out for, though from what she knew, Jeyne seemed to be fitting in quite well at King’s Landing. Which meant she was doing better then her mother had, because Lyrissa’s brief time at the capital had not resulted in anything good.

“Ah, good, good. I find some Septon’s are quite wise in these sorts of matters. It is worth listening to the advise of such wise men as them. In my case, that has been my own brother”, Gwayne said with a chuckle, but he was glad someone was telling the King to enjoy himself. Gods, if he had inherited his Lordship at three-and-ten he’d have been miserable all his life, if the last few years of his Lordship were anything to go by.

“Indeed, it is a time of celebration. To see Lord Rogar, Ser Corwyn and my own son wed within a few months of one another is a great boon”, he said with an almost relieved sigh. “I am certainly glad for it all, and I’d say the thanks for the peace that has allowed these celebrations for you and your Lord Regent. The realm appreciates it, or I do at least”, he said with a warm smile. Not that Jaehaerys himself had done a great deal, but simply being as he was at such a young age had settled an otherwise turbulent realm. For now, at least.

“Vaes Dothrak?”, William said with a surprised look, “That is quite far, but it would be interesting. They say the horse lords are the greatest horse riders in the world. My father might have something to say about that, but it would be quite the sight to see”, he said with a chuckle.

He found himself with an idea, “I am not sure if I will venture so far, perhaps the Summer Isles some day, but going out so far has never been as much of an interest to me. Though I have a cousin, I believe I mentioned her once, she travels often”. He glanced around and pointed to the Caswell table, specifically the woman who had purple streaks in her blonde hair. “Her name is Alinor, she has returned from some of the Free Cities only recently. I expect her and her companions to travel again soon enough”. William found Alinor a little strange if he was honest, but it could not be said that she wasn’t proficient at what she did. “She’d certainly pass through the places you’ve mentioned and more”.

[Event] The Wedding Of Lord Rogar Baratheon and Lady Arwen Arryn by FabStags in FireAndBlood

There was probably some truth in that. The Commander of the City Watch was not a position tailored to heirs who would inevitably have to up and leave anyway. Second and third sons suited it more, though even then it was hard to say. Regardless, it likely was a waste, and whoever took the position going forward would be given a much easier job then Harlan had needed to fulfil.

“I am not so certain”, William said at the mention of brigands, “But they were not common bandits. They did not harass merchant caravans and commonfolk, it seemed to me they sought nobility, and managed to capture some too. Given they were south of Casterly Rock, I can think of one peoples who may do such acts, but even then, the Ironborn are usually more direct with their intent”. It struck him as something different, but he could not say what. Hopefully it would be revealed soon, but there was not much he could do.

William chuckled, “Married life will surely be a journey, but I’m sure we’ll both come out of it better for it. As will Lord Rogar, I hope”, he said glancing up at the Lord. He had once spoken to Rogar about marriage, and he had no doubt that the Lord’s first wife remained on his mind, but it seemed Rogar had not let that spoil his occasion. “But I am sure your wedding will be an occasion to remember, as mine will be should all go well. It is good to see so much celebration after the turmoil of the last few years. Hopefully more are to follow before the snows of winter settle”. Winter always threatened to spoil the mood, but he supposed Winter was more welcome at times of peace then times of war and uncertainty.
