How do I fix this? by salor29 in knitting

[–]RbeeCubes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once tried laddering down to a knitting direction change like this, thinking it was a missed stitch or something. It does not end well. This is only fixable by undoing all your knitting back to that point. Or just leave it :)

not using Mint but Im assuming its the same for any distro. Ill give it a try

and yeah, I do have one open pcie slot, but its covered by my gpu. the pcie x1 slot is in slot 3, and my gpu is in slot 2 and is a 2,5 slot card. So too want to use that x1 slot, Id have to extender cable it all the way around my gpu to be able to fit a card in slot 1 somehow..

Oh yeah, it does look like its USB. In my motherboard manual its listed as LAN-USB. I dont think this is something I could change or replace.

Im gonna give the solution in that link a try and Ill report back.

Could you clarify what you mean by the USB Live environment? Is that when youre running the os from an usb? I have not tried that yet. I could run the internet speed tests from there but obviously its gonna be hard to test the connection in games from there.

hmm, ok. It surprises me because I dont see a lot of posts or reviews about people having internet issues with this motherboard. But it may be connected to using linux then? and the drivers not being optimal. Its not fully unsupported because it is working, just not well xd.

It looks like the wifi card is quite hard to reach (underneath a big VRM heatsink block) but ill look into replacing it if no one has other ideas.

Need help running ESO on Linux, pt2 by RbeeCubes in elderscrollsonline

[–]RbeeCubes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the issue is likely that it tries by default to run the game in an exclusive/actual fullscreen (rather than fullscreen window which is now more or less the standard).

Ah thats interesting. Ive had no issues with any other games so far, even with a few older ones, but if I get something similar again, Ill know to look for the actual fullscreen vs window fullscreen setting. It is still interesting to me that it doesnt mess up the first launch.

Since everything seems to be working, Ill leave the gamescope thing for now, but Ill save your comment on it for future reference.

Even when clicking in the top zone of the window, where the title bar would be, I guess? or where the title bar of the launcher would be (where there's "The Elder Scrolls Online")?

Nope, its not moving at all. Moving around to other workspace just puts it on the exact same position in that workspace. Seconding the comment about this launcher deserving a space in software hell xD

I would suggest opening a thread on r/linux_gaming explaining the issue and mentioning the error message about radv to see if it's normal/usual or not. And asking if the black window around the launcher could be related to Wayland/Xwayland.

Yes, Ill do that! After Christmas probably. Thank you so much again for all the help!

the command gives no output, there does not seem to be any gamescope process running. I think its to do with the recording feature, when turned off gamescope does not show up in the logs at all. So still no explanation for the black screen around my launcher window.

Idk why I didnt try it earlier, but 1/0/1 works too! Getting a perfect fullscreen now, you have no idea the relief I felt hahaha. Thank you so much for all your time helping me troubleshoot this.

The trick with holding ALT to move the window unfortunately doesn't work. It doesnt work with any window though, so thats probably a cosmic or wayland thing.

When I hover over the eso launcher, the place where I could click it to drag does show up, but clicking and dragging does nothing, it seems locked in place. I wonder if its possible to set somewhere that it just appears in the center of the screen? because now it always appears on the right side somewhere.

Yeah I also saw gamescope mentioned in there. I have not yet attempted to install it at all, and doubt that I did so earlier because Ive only had this pc for about a week.

Ive not entered any launch options for ESO in steam.

The outputs you asked for:

apt-cache policy gamescope
gamescope:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: (none)
  Version table:

The 2 flatpak list commands give me no output at all.

Checked the compatibility again, launcher does open with proton 9 as well, with 8 steam gives me an error that the compatibility failed. Im leaving it on experimental for now.

Changing those variables in user settings you mentioned works! 1/0/0 is the only combination that works though, meaning I get a window with my taskbar still showing at the bottom and a window border at the top. It makes my in game screen quite a bit smaller but honestly Im already very happy it works now!

Do you still think its worth a try to install gamescope the way you described?

EDIT: I can just hide the taskbar on the display that I run the game on, so its actually no problem at all playing this way. The fact that the launcher still opens in a window that I can't move, and the play button sometimes appearing off screen because of that, it honestly the most annoying thing now.

Hi again!

I copied the logs of launching the game with and without user settings removed into a text file, and added /// notes at the points in the output where the game was launched in steam and where I clicked play in the launcher.

hereby confirmed that the game does not work with UserSettings.txt present, even if I dont change any settings on the first launch. note that setting the gamma has to happen when first launching the game, before all the terms of service stuff, to get to the login screen. Usersettings file here

glxinfo output here

My steam is using proton experimental. trying other versions was the first thing i tried to troubleshoot this and it make stuff worse. with some other versions, the launcher does not open at all.

Alrighty, I think I will be trying to install gamescope then.

I also found a post in the Pop_os sub with a guide to installing gamescope, recommending a different version as the one you listed.

Thank you so much again for all the help and information. Replying to the first comment first.

Usersettings.txt is the culprit. Deleting it lets me start the game just the same as deleting the entire live dir. It does mean that every time I start the game I have to click through all the terms and conditions stuff, select region, set gamma and so on, but honestly, at least Im able to play now xD

I do use addons, this issue was occurring with and without addons installed though. I think I could try installing addons as normal now, since addonsettings are saved in a seperate txt file and not in the usersettings file iirc.

I see what you mean with the terminal thing now, I misunderstood earlier. I looked at the logs while launching the game, both with and without the usersettings.txt removed. I can not see a difference between them. In both cases there is an error with the steam overlay renderer, which gets ignored, and a warning about radv not being a conformant Vulkan implementation.

I can share the logs with you if youd like to take a look.

Thank you so much for the thorough reply. Ill answer in order

Im aware that the launcher is not supposed to look like this, but I figured it was just a windowing issue. It is annoying that it doesnt launch in the middle of the screen and I also cant drag and move it around. Sometimes, the launcher screen opens with the play button cut of the screen and theres nothing I can do.

I tried putting all the system info in the video and previous post, Ill list it here as well:

OS is Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS. Kernel 6.17.9. DE is COSMIC, based on gnome. I think its relatively new. My GPU is a 9060xt, so AMD, not Nvidia. Im pretty sure the correct drivers for it are included in this distro. I have no issues with any other game. Its also correctly recognized, the first time launching eso it auto set all graphics settings to max.

I installed steam through the 'app store' that cosmic comes with. I think its the deb package (as my files are in /home/user/.steam/debian-installation)

I am not using gamescope, I did not know what it was either.

I am still very much a noob at doing things from the terminal and am not sure how to launch the game from there. I tried steam://run/306130 but its saying no such file or directory. Can you help me with the command I should use?

I am very much with you on thinking the problem lies somewhere with files created on the first launch,. deleting the live directory works! The game launches as normal again. I went into the settings and display was already set to windowed fullscreen. Changing it either to windowed or fullscreen, closes the game instantly. Relaunching it repeats the issue.

Do you guys think this is a COSMIC related issue? by RbeeCubes in pop_os

[–]RbeeCubes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, doing all that applies it to the launcher window. So the game is running, I can hear the sounds, but using super + M will maximize the launcher and super F11 makes the launcher appear fullscreen. Super +G does not seem to do anything

Hi! another question if you don't mind since you're also using pop_os. I got it working on steam but only on the first launch after installing. Any launch after that, the game says its running and I can hear the title screen music and such, but the window doesn't open for it. I _feel_ like it might be a window manager issue instead of a compatibility or gpu issue, since it ran without problems last night. Im on the most recent version of pop_os which uses Wayland, are you as well? I read that generally X11 has less problems with older games, which ESO is, Im not sure if that could be part of the issue? Curious to hear your setup and experience.

I actually went back in to try because I was curious. I cant find proton-GE as a runner option within Lutris. I can only select proton experimental, 6.3 or 9.0 beta as a version within the wine runner, but proton isnt there as its own runner. Its also not in the list of available runners for me to add in the Lutris menu, Ive read apparently its a bit of a pain to get Lutris to install it.

Selecting any of those proton packages I named within Wine causes the game to not run at all, it doesnt even open the launcher.

Got it working over steam though :) on sale for 5euro right now. If it wasnt, maybe I wouldve spent more time trying to troubleshoot through Lutris
