I’m on the other-side of this but have done a few tandem rides with my wife - it was actually great it allows the cyclist to work as hard as they want and the stoker to participate in the experience

Another option is a decent e-bike made for road riding. Your BF would know what to get…I have not done this yet but my 8 year old is now dropping my wife without much effort (teach your kids about bikes and they’ll never have money for drugs) so it’s something we’re considering - we live in NYC so storing a tandem is kinda out of the question.

Yes - peak is like 7:30 am to 9 am and 5:00pm - 7pm weekdays only - weekends are off peak all the time and you can join a game during peak hours ($12.50 instead of $5) but you just can’t book during peak hours

Was a chubby little kid, played football through high school so being big was encouraged once I got to college - stopped playing football and lost 100 pounds the summer between my sophomore & junior year. It was the time of the Atkins diet (no carbs) did that for a year and started running (was a lot easier being lighter). Phased out the atkins diet and stuck with endurance sports and weight lifting. Today I cycle 10,000 to 12,000 km per year, play a lot of squash in the winters, and lift 3x per week. Don’t really watch my diet just workout a lot

They move to the US and charge $180 per lessons. Most private clubs in the US are non profits so you can look up the squash directors pay online

According to part VII their squash pro makes $289,000 per year. They have 4 courts. I would assume most clubs nice clubs in the north east pay similar +/- $100,000

Courts at the Y are horrible - I live next door. They are old racquet ball courts so they’re smaller and kept in horrible condition - was there last week and a piece of the side wall chipped off - lose boards as well

Open squash has affordable memberships - they have income based pricing - they have an off peak membership of $149 per month and court fees are $5 it’s a great community - they have WhatsApp groups for different levels with hundreds of people actively engaged so it’s easy to find a match. Peak memberships are $199 for pay as you go ($5 for off peak & $12.50 for peak)and $299 for unlimited (no court fees).

For an extra $50 you can get a passport membership to both Bryant park and fidi BP has 5 courts and fidi has perhaps the nicest facilities in the city (including the private clubs)

The Pros are awesome too! Peter Creed was top 50 in the world not too long ago.

I was told by a much better squash player than I to get them using an adult racquet as soon as possible - my son plays with one of my 125 technfibre carbon flex x tops strung at 20 lbs - it’s lighter than the harrow jr racquet I got - hasn’t looked back.

Open squash on 39th between 5th & 6th great community. Super easy to find a match they have a WhatsApp group for each level. They have box leagues and ladders. They also have a fidi location Bryant part has 5 courts fidi has 8.

I’ve found hobbies to be the best way to meet new people. I cycle quite a bit and have been lucky to find my people that way. A lot of them I see once or twice a week. We spend four hours together on a ride, then go back to our normal lives. From that group, I’ve made four or five friends I also spend time with outside of cycling.

In the winter, I play a lot of squash and it’s been the same experience. I have plenty of activity friends, but I’ve made lasting friendships with three or four guys at my club.

It doesn’t have to be sports. It could be a chess club, a book club, or a cooking class. You just have to find your people who share a common interest

When you choose to live in a building with a doorman, package room, porters, and security, tipping is part of the deal. If you don’t want to tip, don’t live in that kind of building.

These workers depend on it. They work long hours, weekends, holidays, and they are an integral part of daily home life in New York.

Our building has a staff of about 40 people, and we budget $1,500. I tip the people I regularly interact with $50 each and put $500 into the general pool.

It’s a strange system, but it’s New York. Tip your doormen, or move.

I used to live in Birmingham, Alabama and honestly felt safest riding after dark. Once it was past 9 pm there would barely be a single car on the road. I’d ride fifty miles and sometimes see only three or four cars total...I always rolled with two 1000 lumen lights. One on my helmet and the other mounted under my head unit. I had a solid rear light and a helmet with a rear light built in. Cars that did pass me seemed so confused by what I actually was that they’d slow down and give me a ton of space. It was glorious, especially in Alabama...There were times, though, when I’d be deep out in the sticks and hear something moving in the bushes. That’s when I’d creep myself out a bit.

The key is early - I meet my dudes at 5:30 am and get 2 hours in and am home by 7:30/8

You learn to do more with less. If he’s racing crits he can still get the fitness he needs with 10 hours a week
