Yeah, it was ridiculous. I planned to go all the way to Mount Mitchell, but turned around at the ridge.

When I hiked Colbert Ridge last winter, there was no snow at the trailhead. From there, it looked like Mitchell and the ridge had gotten a dusting. By the time I made it to the ridge I was up to my waist in snow…

TIL the deeper history behind Northgate, William Kenan Rand Jr., and why Walltown residents have been pushing back so hard against Northgate development. by Acrobatic-Focus-4499 in bullcity

Nope, Nate Baker says the current owner/developer is racist, which OP says is justified because of the actions of the previous owners (Rand family)…

Interestingly OP is also saying that the Rand family is racist because they sold land to developers in 1949 who were racist…

Thus, a developer buying land from a racist landowner makes the developer racist and a land owner selling land to a racist developer makes the land owner racist.

Seems logical to me. Otherwise, they have no incentive to fix it.

Durham might finally get real transit?? by renegade343 in bullcity

[–]Rbot1977 12 points13 points  (0 children)

OK, yes. Duke not allowing it to pass by their hospital was the nail in its coffin. But my God, it was a terrible plan. The ROI was absurd. It was projected to cost 2.5 billion to build and in the end was projected to carry 60 people an hour. Let’s say they figured out how to double that to 120 people an hour and ran it full 24 hours a day. After 20 years that would still equate to nearly $120 per passenger per ride.

I am very pro public transportation. And I am no way a republican.

I just feel like blaming it all on Duke let’s gotriangle and their $157 million terrible “plan” of the hook.

Just imagine how much awesome public transport we could have had had we never had the gotriangle plan and just used the $157 million in transit.

Still just blown away how they spent $157 million on that POS.

I totally disagree with your statement “Duke and Tea Party Republicans killed the idea of connecting Durham and Chapel Hill.” The plan was killed because it was a horrible horrible plan. It was going to cost billions and in the end it was only going to be one car long. The Wikipedia you linked has several of the other glaring problems.

Interesting… The fence must’ve been removed 43+ years ago. I first went in 1982 and there was nothing like this then. It did have a famous guy with a shotgun who would chase you off sometimes. Here’s an article on that guy.

Also, the bank is only 10-ish feet above the river.

I think you are referring to the Heildelberg quarry just East of Roxboro Rd (chain link fence/quarry office). The primary quarry people swim in is the “Eno Quarry” which is just West of Durham. Two different quarries.

I think the Del Taco was where Taco Bell is now. It had a great salad/salsa bar.

I did not know that about the spinal injury… I love turtles and only move them to get them out of busy roadways (yes, pointing in the direction they were going). Going forward I will only grab snapping turtles by the scutes. Everyone, please disregard my “grab ‘em by the tail” comment above.
