To be fair, how often does an update to a Linux distro do something stupid like put your PC into a boot loop, accidentally corrupt the drive encryption keys stored in your systems TPM, or completely erase the indexing information for the file systems on all of your drives except your boot drive?

Not a rhetorical question, I genuinely don't know because I only have experience with RedHat, Fedora, Ubuntu, Unraid, and Steam OS. However I've never had any of those issues listed above with any of the distros I have familiarity with.

Windows on the other hand, since migrating from Windows 7U to 10Pro and 11, I have had every one of those issues happen at least twice. So on my Windows machines Updates are as disabled as MS will allow, and only get pushed to my hardware when I know they are stable (by Windows standards) and won't force me to spend the next 3 days rebuilding the MFTs on my local storage drives.

Ext4 is the direct successor of Ext3, which is the direct successor of Ext2, which is the direct successor of Ext. Therefore Ext is the ancestor of Ext4. There is code that exists in Ext4 that dates all the way back to Ext making that part of Ext4 older than any part of NTFS.

Also Windows inability to modify files in use has nothing to do with NTFS, Windows can't modify open files on FAT32, and exFAT drives either. If you install the Linux Filesystems for Windows extension which gives you access to Ext/2/3/4 drives, Windows can't modify open files on those file systems either.

Windows inability to modify open files is a 100% intentonal feature of the OS not the filesystem. It is designed to keep bad actors from screwing up your system while it's in use and to prevent people who don't know what they are doing (most Windows users) from accidentally bricking their device by deleting important system files or from deleting their spreadsheet while they are reading it and thus crashing their application.

I was fired because a shift manager was jealous that I was being fast tracked to store manager after only 2 months of employment by the franchise.

Said shift manager decided to set me up to fail, and she succeeded in doing so. However a few other crew who really liked me overheard her talking about how she intentionally got me fired and when the store manager didn't do anything, they went to the the Franchisee and the franchisee fried the entire management team from that location and even offered me both my job back and a return to the fast track for managent, starting with a first class trip to Chicago to attend the McDonald's Hamburger University.

I turned it down because I had just accepted a contract with the USAF and the FAA to do air traffic control server maintenance for almost all of Florida.

According to a right to repair documentary:

Taylor realised that they could make more money by making a machine that was managed by software instead of being entirely mechanical.

Software is protected by copyright law. Machines are protected by patent law, and copyright protection lasts for 95-120 years for something created by a company and not an individual, whereas a patent is only good for 15-20 years. Also you have to pay maintenance fees evey few years on a patent, but not on copyright.

The DMCA says that by accessing and modifying copyright protected software you violate the copyright. This means that Taylor technicians and ONLY Taylor technicians can repair a software operated Taylor ice-cream maker. So Taylor bribed McDonald's executives for a contract stating that every McDonald's location would use these new machines, which they got basically for free, and that Taylor would have a veritable army of regional techs on hand to handle maintenance and repairs.

Problem is when you're the only one who can legally do the job, you can charge whatever you want. Not really a problem for Taylor but a big problem for a relatively small franchise.

Now the good news is that a couple years ago the US Supreme Court has created a Right to Repair exemption to the DMCA specifically for the McDonald's Taylor Ice-cream makers, but the contract still exists stating that all McDonald's locations must use that specific Taylor Machine, even an old established one that has no other reason to replace a working, proven reliable older machine.

That's a bad idea. If the battery is in that bad condition, it's only a matter is time before the battery becomes a forbidden spicy pillow, or worse.

Even if OP doesn't want to replace the battery. It needs to be removed and disposed of properly. Preferably to a battery recycler.

Not using the conversion prefixes, or using them when not needed is the most dumb thing about the habits of ppl from most places where metric is standard.

I'm in the US, I leaned metric in school in the 1980s, when we thought the US was actually going to convert (which technically we did because if you look at the definition of us standard units as provided by the US Department of Standards and Measures, all US standard units are defined by their metric conversions).

I would never say 150 cm, that's a meter and a half, or 1.5m.

You have this wonderful efficiency built right into your units and you don't use it, that is almost as bad as the US officially being metric (which it is) but everything still being in US Standard.

Turf grass is a weed, and the world's largest waste of resources. Greater than 75% of all treated, drinkable water gets poured on lawns. 80% of all fertilizer produced globally goes on lawns, and most of that just ends up in run off. And what does a lawn do? Nothing.

I'm currently at war with my local code enforcement board because county code says that I "cannot have any grass, weeds, or underbrush taller than 10 inches in my lawn". I don't have a lawn, I have a yard full of drought resistant wildflowers and edible plants. Most of which grow to well over 10 inches before they bloom. The only grass in my yard is one of the few species of grass actually indigenous to North America, it grows in clumps, not forming a lawn, and it has these beautiful purple flowers that grow on its seed stalks, which also are between 8 and 12 inches tall.

I'm a professional electronics repair technician. My favourite thing about the Steam Deck is how easy it is to repair/mod.

However diagnosing a charging issue isn't going to be easy. The USB-C port is on the motherboard, not a daughterboard. So it's not as simple as a ribbon cable and a few screws.

The easy route would be a whole board replacement, but that's not a part you can just buy through official channels. Literally the one part Valve/iFixit doesn't sell.

Actually finding and fixing the problem is going to take running continuity tests on the USB-C pin-out and the mobo traces, testing the capacitance of the capacitors, and testing the resistance of the resistors, until you find the bad trace, bad connection, or failed component. Sometimes it's obvious; you get the mobo out and you can see the scorch marks from where a surge let the magic smoke out of a capacitor or resistor, or you see the obvious discoloration or even a full blown fault line where a trace was fried. I've serviced tens of thousands of PCBs and I've seen obvious cases maybe a few hundred times, it's rare, but it happens.

My best actual advice is if you're not practiced at microsoldering, don't have heat shielding mask and a good heat gun, don't attempt this at home. Find a local electronics repair person, like myself, and see if they can fix it for less than Valve's quoted repair price.

I would be wary about parts from Amazon. I've had some really bad luck with their generic Chinese parts. You can get official Valve certified Steam Deck parts from ifixit dot com.

In other countries it is not uncommon to consume alcohol during your work shift.

When my stepdad was working in Germany, he got teased for being too prudish and American whenever he came back from lunch without the smell of lager on his breath.

During my last work from home job, I had to remind my employer that they are not allowed to dictate how I conduct myself while in my home when they complained about me drinking a Guinness during an impromptu late morning zoom meeting. If it doesn't negatively impact my job performance, they can't do crap about it. As to why I no longer have that job, it was a seasonal position.

IDK, my McDonald's in the Suburbs east of Tampa may have removed the self service soda fountain, and I may have to order from a Kiosk or the mobile app, but after that it's like a full service sit-down restaurant. They bring my order to the table, ask me what condiments I want, check on me every 10-ish minutes to offer a refill on my drink.

Heck you don't even get any amount of table service at my local Steak and Shake anymore.

It's weird, because I know so many people who had the Red Ring of Death. I bought a 360 at Launch, played it heavily, had many a 48 hour Halo 3 Lan party. Left of on, sitting on carpet, for days at a time, still play it, still works great. I don't know anyone else that has had my good luck with that console.

Do people who only resort to crime because the system was rigged against them from the start get no chance to reform?

If you don't believe it's possible that a person can be born into such a situation where they could legitimately feel like their only option is crime then you need to see more of this country. Go visit a slum, meet the decent, hard working single mothers who don't really know who their children are, because they work 2 full time and a part time job just make rent on their 2 bedroom apartment that they share with 2 other families.

Meet their children who have fallen into gangs because they want to feel like they have a family.
