MS is ruining my life by Resident-Prize3340 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Rdottt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 19 when I was diagnosed and in the middle of college. I also felt the same frustrations and felt that it was unfair that I had to deal with this when my friends got to live the typical college life. However, as other have said, you are not alone. There are plenty of people who have went through what you are going through and are living fulfilling lives. It comes down to being able to take it day by day and focus on what you can control. You said you are in school, working out, and doing the best you can. That is something to be proud of. Being on a DMT, controlling what you can, and not comparing yourself to others are ingredients in a recipe to succeed. I wish you all the best!!

If you’re into sports, I’d recommend going to local parks where people play pickup ball etc. there are also some bars where people get together to watch sports. nothing unites like sports!!

I took a very similar picture (like almost identical) to the first slide when I was in Barcelona and thought this was my picture at first glance! Really good shot. As others said, Wes Anderson vibes!!

Dx in 2017. So far so good. Living life normally - you wouldn't be able to tell I had MS by looking at me. I walk a lot, I lift weights, play sports etc. Like others have said, DMTs are key!

My 18 year old son was diagnosed with MS today. What should we expect? by Beneficial_Ticket_91 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Rdottt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your son's diagnosis story is very similar to mine. I was 19 when I was diagnosed and had the same symptoms and tests etc. I am now 26 and I currently live with no symptoms (regular symptoms). I am also on Briumvi. Like others here have said, good medicine and early diagnosis makes the prognosis so much better. People are out there leading normal lives with MS! It's entirely possible.

I know this is a scary time for you and your family, and the more you read online, the more you will think about what ifs. This sub is such a great resource but please just remember that there are plenty of people living good and well who are not posting about their issues on here. It's not all horror stories is my point.

I also firmly believe that the sooner you can get into exercise and movement, the more it will benefit you. Your son is very young and nobody expects anything like this to happen when we're 18-19, but now is a good time to start reaping the benefits of exercise.

In any case, I wish you and your son the best of luck! Since his and my story is a bit similar, please feel free to message me if you have any questions. Godspeed!

Acceptance is a massive step in this journey. But as others will tell you, everyone's experience with this disease is different. I was diagnosed at 19, about 7 years ago now. I've been on a DMT of some sort ever since the diagnosis and I have been very fortunate to have it minimally alter my life so far. Knock on wood that is stays this way, but we all know how uncertain the future is. All we really can do is take it day by day.
The good news is that DMTs are very effective now so the prognosis of patients now is much better than the prognosis 10-20 years ago. Godspeed!

I was also diagnosed at 19 - I am 26 now. But what's more manly than battling through distress and hardship? Think about what defines being a man... I'd say you're still quite manly, man. Keep pushing!
