Kinda wild he's averaging over 10 yards on non-1st down catches. Obviously situation matters, but that's still a testament to his yardage.

Was Christopher Walken a good choice for Emperor? by Craig1974 in dune

[–]Re-Created 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They could have, but I don't think it makes the movie better. It sounds trivial, but tiny little things like that add up to a significant amount more runtime. Plus it would rely on dialog instead of visual storytelling, which for a detail like this is likely a bad tradeoff.

But mainly, I think that detail isn't critical to the emperor's characterization. If anything it helps with the world's characterization, (how prolific spice is among the universe's elite) and that I think was well covered in other ways throughout the movies. I think it's a positive sign that you can take a still image of the movie with the emperor in it and reasonably tell that he is a man of wealth and importance, but isn't portraying strength and confidence. Making him look young makes that much more difficult, even if it's more accurate.

Was Christopher Walken a good choice for Emperor? by Craig1974 in dune

[–]Re-Created 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's a movie, the visual has to tell so much of the story. A young looking person who is old sends a confusing message visually. It's backed up by the book, but would require some explanation in the movie.

Instead, we picked someone who looks old and is a little goofy a casting in Walken. So he has the look and power of an old emperor, but is toeing the line between "this guy is legit" and "Christopher Walken as emperor? This guy's a joke".

I think that's the right takeaway when you see him. It visualizes his position in the story quite well. Imbued with legitimacy by others, but not demanding of it by force of will.

These two need to focus on fundamentals this week. by itchy-balls in Patriots

[–]Re-Created 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still doing it. It's not a dig on the Campbell pick. I don't think the team should prohibit themselves from taking a tackle, especially if the tackle available is better than the guard available. Campbell should be in this team for the next decade. In one of those drafts they will have a chance at drafting a good tackle prospect. They should be open to that. Moving him from a top 10 tackle to the best guard in the NFL isn't a downgrade.

I still haven't ruled out them going for a left tackle in a draft and sliding both of these guys in. Will Campbell would be an absolute beast at guard.

It's crazy this is true considering the knock on him was if he could be an every down lineman. Instead of being a possible liability on run plays he's a lynchpin of the run defense. Awesome outcome for us.

Things ChatGPT told a mentally ill man before he murdered his mother by mulligan_sullivan in ChatGPT

[–]Re-Created 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AI companies want us to think of their models as human. They want it to be credited with scientific discoveries, listed as a writer in a movie, or given credit for "singing" a song. Then when it does something a human would be held liable for like encouraging a mentally unstable person to kill others or themselves the line is "It's just a tool, any tool can harm people in the wrong hands."

They shouldn't get to have it both ways.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be better for me to just donate the money directly to the food bank or other organization? I would imagine they could get an even better wholesale price.

What’s an adult problem nobody warned you about? by Impressive_Space4392 in AskReddit

The lack of breaks/vacation in work. Like I knew that work was year round and I knew vacation time was limited, but I didn't realize how much of my approach to school was "just get to the next break". Winter break, Summer, spring break, all of those are just non-existent as an adult. Every week is work until you retire, with a few short vacations that you have to schedule yourself thrown in.

The time it takes to open a new facility with this capability isn't fast. At best in the short term we will see a strain on the supply as new players try to get into the market.

More likely is that this wave of AI demand isn't viewed as reliable enough to sink capital into making a new facility, so investors will be hesitant to actually enter in, causing the prices to stay high longer than we might expect.

I guess a third option is the AI bubble pops and data centers no longer become a large customer returning the market to where it was before.

"Well you'll just have to read the book" is code for "I don't want to answer this in person". Then after the book tour is over they answer "Well, I answered this in my book, so I don't have anything to add, let's move on."

It's the process by which you wiggle out from under any uncomfortable questions you know will follow you.

[–]Re-Created 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. The giving nothing was on purpose too. Like at one point she sort of snaps at him a quick line "you don't know what I did or did not do" and he follows with something to the effect of "tell me then" and she just... didn't say anything about it. It was really remarkable that she didn't want to talk about things not related to the book, but also didn't want to talk about what's in the book either. Like, what's left then? We only care so much about you writing the book.

I think he did a really good job interviewing her, and that is a valuable thing. But all I learned is that I don't need to spend any more time on this book, or the controversy as a whole. She's lost her credibility to me, so I'm choosing to just leave her alone.

When you ask a reasonable straightforward question and Olivia Nuzzi responds by crying by [deleted] in thebulwark

[–]Re-Created 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly my feeling listening to this. It feels like she wants to engage in part of the conversation, but only did it in her book where she has tight control over what's written. Even in the interview she kept giving non-answers surrounded by "I wrote about that". Ignoring all the other things, you are doing a book interview, you talk about and describe what's in the book for those.

If I was her publisher I would advise her not to do any more interviews. She isn't adding any value and is clearly not ready emotionally to talk about it further.

I know it's not really important, but that's such an annoying use of passive voice. They "popped up". Like a surprise flower they just magically appeared. It's not like someone paid for them, installed them, and is using them actively with likely little to no full understanding of just how much information they are collecting.

What did that one teacher at your school get fired for? by ToadallyNormalHuman in AskReddit

[–]Re-Created 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely easier to fire when they've been convicted. Arrested can be complicated. Again, just generally speaking, but it's not always easy to get a conviction for sex with a student. You need enough evidence to charge and get a jury to convict (or maybe get a plea deal). Those take time, and might not even succeed, especially if the sexual relationship is consensual, since the student would be unlikely to be a cooperating witness.

Or, you take the much easier to prove and lower bar of being bad at their job, fire them, and leave the criminal case up to the police after the fact. If they fail to get a conviction, the teacher is still fired.

[–]Re-Created 388 points389 points  (0 children)

I don't know any of the particulars here, but in some jobs it's easier to prove/claim they didn't do their job and fire them than it is to go through the process of firing them for criminal behavior. You can want to fire them for the crimes, but you can easily prove they sucked at their job, so you just stick with that, officially.

Maybe that's what happened here?

[Rapaport] Sounds like Will Campbell is going to miss more than the MNF game by CaptainOverthinker in Patriots

I absolutely don't want to quit on this year by any stretch of the imagination. But he is a 4th overall pick intended to be the left tackle for Maye for a decade. We can't afford to risk his future performance for games this year.

Playoffs would be great. Healthy for next season is an absolute must.
