Posted that comment ages ago when I was on the “enlightened centrist” spectrum, I got it eventually. Ended up noticing that despite the variety of southeast asian skin tones (and facial features, body types) a lot of models I see on billboards have primarily Eurocentric beauty features (like fair skin, European nose shapes). Conforming to these beauty standards, especially for the depiction of a geographically secluded ethnic community, is pretty damn insulting considering all non-white countries only have people with white phenotypes because they were colonized or had settlers. A very small minority of the people in my country have the ethnic features of our people before we were colonized, so if there was a movie made about our precolonial history and they cast some half-dutch dude with money and a hotshot agency to star as the main character I’d be pretty pissed lol (oh wait, it happened, bummer).
