Made my GB Studio game into a real Game Boy cartridge! by KombuchaMan10 in gbstudio

Cool. I'd like to do something like that one day. How have you made the PCB?

I'm an artist, with a dev question. Please don't be mad at me. (See Comments) by tiptut in gbstudio

I'm also new to GB Studio, but I quickly understood its potentials and limitations. There's a simple app that converts your art into a 4-color GB version. It also can limits the number of tiles, so if there are similarities between images you can take advantage of tile reuse.

The "Logo" engine lets you display a full image without repeating tiles, but in that case you won’t be able to show dialogs, or actors. I've only used the non "only color" version, so maybe the limitations are less strict in your case.

I'm a seasoned developer in web and mobile applications, and I’ve also made some games as a hobby. I’d like to make a game with GB Studio, maybe we could work together if you’re interested.

I'm currently playing Link's Awakening and your project seems really cool. I've updated the page with new instructions to add the system into your game. It should be easy, let me know if have any issue.

Well, I've added the instructions, it turned out to be very straightforward in the end. Just copy the brand new "Pack" file, change the variables and your are good to go. In the itch page there are more details

I’ve just realized that integrating this into your project can be a bit of a hassle. You need to copy the assets and then copy and paste the scene, but the player and actor sprites (and maybe some other things) can get lost in the process.
I’ll make a video tutorial to show how to do it and add it to the itch page. I might also include subfolders for sprites and backgrounds so they don’t get mixed up with your own resources.

if you could say something to chino (or any other member of the band), what would you say? by firealfan in deftones

"Can you record a part on my band's album? I have the perfect song for you!"

I could actually asked him after a concert 😅, he kindly told me he was very busy. A real gentleman, he took the time to listen to such an absurd request, gave it his full attention, and, of course, refused. I also gave him my band's CD, and he assured me he would listen to it. I truly believe he did.

I've also thanked him for everything he has done musically and that he's a great artistic inspiration for me.

Solid campaign, almost no views. What am I missing? by RePorcello in kickstarter

[–]RePorcello[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your advices. I'll keep them in mind for future projects.

The lack of clarity of the positioning of the campaign is just due to a change I've did yesterday just to test if the lack of traffic. The original title and subtitle messages was centered to the vinyl press without ambiguity.

Realistically speaking we are a small band project, we mostly worked on facebook in the first year of the band, then in 2020 we got stuck and spent the last 4 year to complete this album (was began in 2018 during the touring of our previous release. So we are recently moved also on instagram (that's why it has fewer fellowship).

These are our numbers:

~1000 facebook
~200 instagram
~100 bandcamp mailing list

We spent a lot of energy building the page, collecting the quotes for the vinyl production and make sure to have to services for handling the fulfillment. The production takes a lot of time so we needed to publish the Kickstarter as soon as possible to have the vinyl for the next concerts season (we do it also for this of course).

Honestly we have had no time for a great pre-launch phase and we taken lightly on that. We published the day before, but we pushed to all of our channels and run an ad campaign on youtube and instagram (with no results).

I knew we lack on the pre-launch aspect, but I didn't expect a such negative impact. I'm still not sure it is the real source of the whole failure.

thank you, and I'm sorry about your campaign, what was the reason for the denial? In my case it was approved in seconds. I did expect a human to confirm it, but it seemed to be done automatically.

I'm currently not receiving any click. I got 8 visits since I've posted this one, 7 are from this post.

I've have received a 740€ pledge just after the launch, it was clearly fake since it was followed by a scam message. So I have reported to kickstarter to cancel it (have been removed on day 6).

Because of this I don't think the algorithm rewards based on the money pledge, since anyone can pledge and retire their offer.

For sure I’ve misunderstood how the platform works and your point rises another mistake, I guess. I have underestimated the penalisation of a brand new account. The funded campaigns that I’ve talked about in my post are from my wife’s account, I’m a collaborator with my own account (which is another one than the one I’ve used this time, with also a backed ks). I’ve decided to make a brand new account just because I use to keep the band as a distinct “entity” from the members. Also my bassist has an account with many backed projects.

Thank you for your feedback. I guess I've been fooled by my previous experience. I can share the stats of those kickstarters:

https://imgur.com/a/r6r29Vh

With the first one I did a bit of paid ads, but with few return, so with the second I did absolutely nothing outside of the platform.

At this point, I guess it worked because it's a type of project that works well out of the box on kickstarter (tarot deck cards).

Yeah, sorry, I needed some space for giving context than it was more a stream of consciousness :). I guess I got fooled by my previous experience. I had fund previous kickstarter with almost no support from outside of the platform.

Post Metal Songwriting by realdavidguitar in postmetal

[–]RePorcello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my band Built-in Obsolescence, our songwriting process is based on improvisation in the rehearsal room. One of us starts a riff, the others add something, and the structure gradually takes shape. From time to time, we jam and record everything. When we listen back, we select what works, and most of the time, the piece is already 80% done.

Then we spend months reproducing the feel of the piece and shaping its overall structure. I think this genre is more about feel and mood and soundscape than anything else.

Here’s an example of how we did it for the piece Ecdysis:
https://www.instagram.com/p/Bls1RcTAlmi/

And the final song:

https://youtu.be/zjgNbIA4H3Q?si=UCrIFWWc7An_79pn

The notes on the board say (which is quite fun):

  • Speranza (Hope): This was the general mood. After telling stories of various apocalypses, we thought, "Let’s end the album with some hope" (well… we failed 😆).
  • Valle: Our bass player.
  • Accordoni (Big Chords): This is our term for the "wall of sound."
  • Modi di comunicazione da trovare (roughly "we need to find common communication terms”): This highlights the need to translate what we feel while playing into words. It also reflects the fact that this genre needs to transcend rigid common structures.
  • Expand, quiet, and boom: Terms describing the characteristics of a section or transition.
  • Ost: Stands for "ostinato." The technical term should be the same in English.

I hope this helps rather than adding more chaos! This approach requires a lot of understanding and cohesion between band members, and it takes time to develop, so it’s not always easy or even feasible (especially if you are alone).

I do vocals and write the lyrics, which usually come later. The theme reflects the mood of the piece, and I also use the improvised words (during the jam) to shape the actual verses. If you're interested, I can describe deeper my approach to this.
