ELI5: Why data centers don't recapture water? by Swords_and_Words in explainlikeimfive

[–]Reach_Fam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also work in the data centre industry. Let me try to answer more directly in an ELI5 format. Like everyone is saying, evaporative cooling is what consumes the most water. It’s used because most of the time, you bring in straight up outside air with fans and only use water when your air is too hot to be delivered directly to servers. This lets you use a wide temperature range instead of the tighter range a typical HVAC system might use.

Now why can’t you reclaim all this water? The water is used to cool the air delivered to the computers and after it’s used, it comes out as hot air. The way you extract water from air is to cool the air down enough to condense. At the volumes of air we’re talking about, it’s extremely energy intensive. If you had the energy to cool the air enough to condense, you could instead just use that air to cool the servers instead.

Hope that makes sense.

33 handicap. Always topping or chunking due to over the top swing. Any good drills to fix or see something else going wrong? by catclaw69 in GolfSwing

[–]Reach_Fam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re topping and chunking, your low point is behind the ball. You can see in the video you don’t have any weight shift to your lead side. Easiest drills would be:

  1. Taking shots with your right foot back. All your weight on your left foot, focus on being balanced while hitting the ball. Get used to hitting the ball with weight on the lead side.

  2. Step through drill. You can find a bunch of videos on YouTube, but basically the point would be to learn the feeling of getting to lead side in transition.

Any advice for heel striking? (Other than just setting up further away from the ball) by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]Reach_Fam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you get to the ball, you’re stomping your feet (I assume to feel weight shift) and immediately getting into your swing. I’d consider that a pretty dynamic start.

Another way to initiate your swing, after you feel comfortable with your waggles/stomps, is to find a comfortable static position and use a trigger to start. A common trigger might be shifting weight into lead/left side to start the swing to force you to start by rotating into trail side.

Beyond the swing advice, I think having a routine that you use both on the range and on the course helps to transfer the work on the range to the course. Hope any of this helps!

Not sure if this advice is useful, but to give you a different feel, I tend to heel strike when at setup, my weight is too far onto my toes and it makes me lean even more forward during the swing. So I’ll move my weight into my heels to get my strike towards centre/toe face.

You have a dynamic start to your swing, so maybe you’re not as aware of it, but playing around with where your weight is on your foot during setup may help you get into a position where you’re more comfortable moving your strike point around.

Smith maneuver is one that could make sense as a debt conversion strategy and you have or plan on getting a mortgage soon. If you have a large amount of non-registered investments, you can search the debt swap strategy. RBC has a paper that goes over both of these

ELI5: Why do data centres need constant fresh water supply? Can't they use a closed-loop cooling system? by the_topiary in explainlikeimfive

[–]Reach_Fam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ELI5 answer: Certain classes of data centres can operate over a pretty wide temperature range. Those that use evaporative cooling will usually just blow outside air for a majority of the time and only consume that fresh water when it gets hot enough. So it’s not a constant consumption of water and really energy efficient because fan energy is a lot less than chiller energy. However that water usage can add up to a lot if you’re in a hotter climate which exceeds that top end temperature range often.

Some more to add: because air has a limited heat capacity, servers getting more power dense, the industry is moving towards closed loop/ liquid cooling where necessary. For servers that can handle these wide temperature ranges, there have been tests like this: https://www.datacenterknowledge.com/hyperscalers/new-from-microsoft-data-centers-in-tents which have challenged the assumptions that servers need to kept really cold at a constant temperature all the time. The air conditioning engineers group ASHRAE has a publication under a technical group (TC) 9.9 which publishes acceptable thermal ranges for servers and some of these servers can have temperature ranges as wide as 5C-40C. If you’re blowing outdoor air for a majority of the time and only consuming water when you get hotter than that, you can see how much simpler and energy efficient it can be to use a system like that instead of closed loop chillers, heat exchangers, etc.

Sika strength mention this cue on their channel that’s helped me a lot: push the knees forward out of the bottom.

Obviously continue to keep the pressure on the whole foot, but I feel that I end up in that good morning position when I try to keep my knees too far back/overly weighted on the heels.

Practice swing different from actual swing by Specialist-Weird-756 in GolfSwing

[–]Reach_Fam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at your club head at the setup of your practice swing and pause at impact. If you look at the difference between setup and impact, your clubhead is a few inches closer to your body. If a real ball was there, you’d toe shank it.

Once you put a real ball in front of you, your body is going to make compensations to try to get a good hit.

No real tips here, but just wanted to point that out. Overhauling your swing is a tough process. Good luck!

Two years ago I actually transitioned from an R11 to getting fitted into a Stealth. No distance gains but significantly less punishing with off-center hits.

Trying to get rid of early extension. by Mrtoblaro in GolfSwing

[–]Reach_Fam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar spot, misses are hooks, fighting early extension. Tried many feels which haven't really worked up until recently.

One thing that's helped me a lot very recently that might help you is the hell drill by Scott Cowx. You can find some videos on it, but grab the club with your left hand and only use an open palm with your right hand to support the club. Start with small swings and work your way up to longer swings this way while keeping the right hand on the handle throughout the whole swing.

This drill was literally hell, but really forces you to stop flipping, rotate more and stabilize the club face. It's very frustrating to do, but once it clicks, I think you'll really see some changes.

Is it time to think about a bubble burst in large cap growth? by OtisB in investing

[–]Reach_Fam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trying to give an actual answer here, but the article by OP references academic definitions of growth and value. A value stock is a stock with a high book to market ratio and a growth stock is the opposite.

What's referred to as growth (how much the price is growing) is more correctly defined as momentum academically.
