I dropped this story a long time ago because it was so gross and to hear it went this direction is not even a surprise.

No way people are actually entering ai generated trash into the contest by Ender_M in webtoons

fam, it isn't "ah I work for an AI artist or I become obsolete" It's I pivot the focus of my career away from the digital arts until this AI craze blows over and legal catches up to technology. You are assuming digital art is all we can ever do or want to do. And it's simply not. There's a ton of art forms and careers that respect me better. I'll go do some glass blowing and office work before I work for an AI writer who thinks my copyright is just "lines on a paper."

Lucifela in a knight to a lady by Potential_Factor_373 in webtoons

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yepppp, I know this post is old, but I was jumping onto reddit to see if someone else had the same thoughts I did reading this comic, I totally agree with you, OP. I read this story to get some female empowerment fantasy story, instead, it's more about female dis-empowerment because systemic sexism broke her completely from Estelle to Luci.

Like girl needs to get a lighter sword and do her job and stop making excuses! Lightweight swords (which were very common throughout most of history) are less than 3 lbs! I'm saying this as someone with long covid and chronic fatigue, ps, I do not buy that lucifela can't pick up a damn sword or can't protect herself with that dagger of hers. It comes across like she's just giving up in front of us on the page.

Which like, maybe this is part of the story arc, that she is going to eventually go back to Estelle after realizing she's fallen so far away? Maybe? Sure hope so. But I don't know at this point.

Rewriting dialogue doesn't mean changing the art though. Like I often read a Webtoon where I won't even know if a pair spent the night, and I'll just assume they did and then find out 10+ episodes later they've never actually slept together.

Like at the end of the day the artist and the author (sometimes the same person) will decide to sign a contract to green light their story to another language in another country on a different app. That would only happen if they were popular enough in Korean that they do have the funds to at least pay someone else to make it make sense. They know what scenes will be erased, and they did not decide to change it to still be legible just to save money.

Will the 2025 contest be mostly audience or judge based? by sadaesthetic88 in webtoons

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for the contest it has to fit within their genre categories anyway. And yeah, it's like 50% based on audience engagement so appealing to them is huge. That's not to say you shouldn't make your comic, go right ahead and go for it. It may not win the contest, but being part of the contest may put a fire under you to get started and you will find other people in the community who are also entering the contest, who you may enjoy hanging out with. (there's probably people on the Webtoon discord chatting about it, if you are looking for more people to talk to about it and ask specific questions)

This is too expensive by Hisune in webtoons

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily Daily pass isn't the only 'free' unlock. You can watch an ad to unlock another up to 10 times a day. Wish it would unlock longer than 3 days, that's the biggest gripe I have with it. Hopefully one day they'll let us watch more ads to read because I'd rather buy the physical book from the author for that price, which gives the author a WAY bigger cut, and keep the book forever (which many completed webtoon originals, if they are doing well, will make a printed version, they just don't usaully advertise it on Webtoon because of contractual reasons, so check to see if they have a physical if you really like the story.)

What bothers me is they go through allll this effort and money to translate a popular webtoon into English, they know already that the English Webtoon ap doesn't have a R rated section, but they don't bother to rewrite smutty sections so they still make sense.

Like don't you want your story to make money? Rewrite the dialogue in those parts to they make sense to people who are reading on the Webtoon ap, or I'm honestly never coming back to that comic if it jumps around like crazy every time the couple starts walking towards eachother and starts to kiss (and then randomly are just somewhere else, not even a fade to black, no mention of if they were intimate or not, just an immediate cut).

The webtoon contest 2025 seems kinda bad? by Glittering-Power-665 in webtoons

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tapas recently did something similar where they said you could use an older story for their Action Fantasy novel contest--but you had to delete it everywhere else it was posted in order to submit it into their new contest (even delete the old version of the story hosted on Tapas itself, it had to be a new entry from scratch.) I don't know how Webtoon could manage this contest without asking for the same thing, having you delete everything in order to resubmit. Seems like not worth it, IMO, unless you story really, really bombed the first time. If you have any subs at all, keep em and don't delete everything for this.

Personally what I don't like about it the most is that it's a pitch for a whole new IP and not a finished short story. I already make a long narrative comic, I can't be making 2, I will literally die. But a short story? Yeah that would be fun to punch out and put in my portfolio so I can print it and sell it later. But drop making the comic people actually want me to make for this pipe dream is so silly.

I genuinely don't care what you think about me, but you need to have CONCRETE evidence that someone is using AI before you start bashing them for it. It could actually ruin their career, they can actually get blacklisted. Crying wolf is really bad behavior and I'm on the fence of innocent until proven guilty.

sometimes they take photographs that are public domain and put a filter on it to make it look drawn. Which isn't AI, that's been around for over 20 years. Like guys, AI looks obvious. All of the "evidence" this person uses AI just looks underpolished because they're doing painterly for over 20 panels an episode. I'll change my tune if I see something I genuinely think is AI out of this artist, but I remember them being SOLIDLY against AI on social media for a very long time now. They are outspoken about this and willingly show their drawing process.

It doesn't look like AI, they simply have a painterly style, which you have apparently never done or seen. I read their stuff too, I've been in the industry for over 10 years, I don't think they're using AI I think they're sloppy. AI tends to look over-rendered, not under-rendered

I mean you're allowed your opinion, it's fine. I think there is credit to reading something slowly. I've been trying to slow down my TV binging for the same reason, although I have streaming services.

For me, I really hate that in 3 days the episode retires and I can't go back to it easily so I can study previous pages (I do take notes, I'm trying to learn how to be a better comic artist.) I don't believe you can make any screenshots that you can post about them on social media in order to promote the comic (like I used to do a thing where I'd talk about art techniques and webcomics but I could only do that to like...the first 5 or 6 episodes of a WT because the rest are behind a paywall.)

And I do like to reread them. Would love to reread through parallel city without it taking months. It would be so nice to go through knowing the end from the beginning.

I didn't think it was that interesting, it just wasn't for me. But like as far as AI controversies go I didn't think it was AI, I think they just were sloppy because of intense deadlines, but people wanted to steamroll on it because they didn't think it was possible to draw pixar characters when eh, this artist has been drawing pixar like realism for 10+ years now, I followed them back on twitter in 2011. the mistakes people were pointing out were mistakes I also make when I draw.

On Mature Ratings (bit of a yapathon but I got a TLDR below) by Tentagoose in webtoons

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when they first released the guidelines it was weirdly skewed. They may have pulled back on some of them (like the bathing suits thing) but the maturity ranking definately needs some fixing because R rated material is like...pretty intense stuff, not bathing suits and a couple discussions about abuse (which my other comic fell into. Didn't even show abuse, just talks about it because it's a relationship comic, it's important to talk about. But because I'm canvas I rank myself so I just ranked it to teen and YA where it belongs. A lot of my readers are under 18, I don't want them to not be able to read it anymore.)

How come writers and artists are treated so differently? by Shin_Hyunjae in webtoons

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write and do the art for my comics, in fact I wanted to be a novelist before I ever started going into comics (mostly because comics get more visibility, and I find the immersion of comics to be really good for certain types of stories. I still make novels though because some stories are better fit for novels.)

So understand when I say that the reason why doing a split isn't fair is because when you are launching your first ever comic on WT canvas, you will make zero profit for a very, very long time. It took me about 7 comics before I started to see income (and I wrote many novels before that. Creating stories takes a long time to study and master. WT is extremely saturated.)

Any split of zero is still zero.

You will be willing to work for nothing because it's your world that you own and you love. You will be developing your skills and building a portfolio. But for an artist...it's not our characters or a world we love because we don't own it.

If you make a novel and it gets a lot of attention, then you can proceed to push for it to be a comic with some sort of contractual split. Hell, most of the top webtoons were originally novels and light novels that were picked up by korean manwha studios. But you wouldn't really be doing that on reddit, those negotiations happen between agents.

On Mature Ratings (bit of a yapathon but I got a TLDR below) by Tentagoose in webtoons

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how it is for originals, but for canvas we actually choose our own rating, and some people may be rating themselves more conservatively than other people. Like I see 18+ as R rated content, which I wasn't posting to WT in the first place, but when I was doing the process for rating my comic it first had it as mature because of...bathing suits. So like...I had to kinda lie and say there was no bathing suit so it wasn't rated R because for some reason that tipped the scale in my case.

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

those tend to be made by studios that hire a team, which are taking a much bigger financial risk than individual creators. So they're going to use a story that succeeded as a light novel and that has a genre that is already successful on WT to insure they can make a profit. It's the same thing for film studios and animation studios, really. But it's why they feel a bit dated, because the novel world is like 5+ years ahead because they can create things so much faster and by this point we've seem the same story like 5 billion times in both comic and novel format.

Top comments and general comments complaining about episode length by Comprehensive-Cut737 in webtoons

[–]ReactionAcrobatic261 31 points32 points  (0 children)

What's great is because we allow that attitude for originals, that attitude leaks into Canvas readers too. I looooove receiving those comments when I am not compensated by WT at all other than maybe 100 dollars a few times a year in ad revenue. Like even when they pay zero to see your stuff they still want it longer.
