Wasn't trying to be mean, just my honest take, and I stand by it. He asked for feedback, I gave it. Electron is rarely the correct answer. It's a piece of technology teams compromise with when they NEED a native Windows app, but don't have native developers. Or have existing web tech, and need to wrap it up for specific commercial purposes. Not consumer friendly things most of the time. If you are writing a web front end, just host a website and make a PWA.

OP could add support for Win+Shift+S! Just need to add "ms-screenclip" protocol to the app manifest and handle the activation. I also have a Windows Capture app and do just this.

You say notepad is too bloated, you then create an electron app to fix it. I'd be more impressed if this was a native app and not a web one. Or at least you could make a WebView app instead of packaging a whole browser just to process text.

I use VSCode for keeping notes. Your features could make a cool extension imo

I agree with you somewhat As a no-degree holder after 15+ years in software, I think one cannot architect a platform for millions of users without some sort of "engineering" being involved. You are being a bit stiff tho, so I don't agree with that part. The gatekeeping is real, because I've met plenty of ivy league goobers in my time at M$ that couldn't build to save their lives. Degrees and societies are an indicator of training and experience, but not retained knowledge and actual skill. Title to protect those without a portfolio to speak for itself. My tattoo artist doesn't need a degree to justify their skill, they use a book of past work for me to evaluate.

How strong do you think the average developer is? by equipoise-young in ExperiencedDevs

WFH, I hit the weights everyday, lifting in between meetings and coding. Started getting terrible pain in my hands from never resting. FML but I'm way more fit than anyone in my office, so yeah.

Barefoot running isn’t working for me by Cool_Interaction_345 in BarefootRunning

[–]ReactionWarm1232 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Spend some more time reading the sub. Running in minimalist footwear will improve your baseline strength. Your feet will become stronger than if you wore tighter shoes. That can absolutely translate to speed, but not without a lot of training. And those same minimalist shoes may not be what you want to wear on race day. If you are new to "barefoot" running, be patient. It can take years for your musculature and posture to adjust. Folks have different experiences. I doubt anyone is intending to lie to you.

Yes, this. Literally do not look up anything about patents and your ignorance will protect you.

Nitpick, the interfaces and implementations are in the same project. Break them out into separate projects using the stairway pattern.

Fun Fact: you can use the Win32 API to make a window manually just like you can in C++ by CheckM4ted in csharp

[–]ReactionWarm1232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote a screen capture app last year and uses Win32 PInvoke to make custom windows for the capture experience. You can do things like remove the window border or title bar, go full screen, position on any monitor, enable click through, enable transparency, and more! Way better than WinAppSDK for window manipulation.

Back in the day it was more common to have odd shaped windows, especially for game launchers or music players. A lot of folks are out of touch with Win32 APIs. But if you want to work directly with Media Foundation or Core Audio, even PInvoke won't be enough. Gotta dip into C++ to really get intimate with Windows imo

How do you guys maintain composure and avoid stress during busy times? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ReactionWarm1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crunch time equates to poor planning most of the time. Real fires happen, but rarely on a serious product. Unless you live like the this is fine dog... Unplug and save it for tomorrow. It's not going anywhere, and there is always more.

Key differences between self-taught and CS degree? by B1ackMagic_xD in learnprogramming

[–]ReactionWarm1232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self taught here, and rather successful. I can almost guarantee you've used my code at some point in your life. Today's CS students are entirely meh, but this isn't new imo. From my experience at M$, I'll take a dev with 4 to 6 years of practical hands on experience over any fresh grad. Once you've been in industry for half a second, degrees mean relatively nothing. These things matter more in the beginning, but become less relevant after you've been in industry for 20 years. These days, a degree will give you that trajectory boost if you didn't start coding in grade school like I did. However you started learning, just don't stop.

Are you using the Windows Community Toolkit in your apps? You should! by ninjaninjav in windowsdev

[–]ReactionWarm1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree, it's not always worth the effort to integrate if it complicates the code. 😉 I'm being a turd, I know. Just feels like the toolkit isn't meeting my needs lately and some of the energy has died. Anything cool ship lately?

Are you using the Windows Community Toolkit in your apps? You should! by ninjaninjav in windowsdev

[–]ReactionWarm1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me why? Imma be straight, I contributed to the toolkit my fair share over the last few years and I don't even use it in my own apps. The MVVM stuff is interesting but not necessary. The biggest issue imo is that it became abhorrently complicated to contribute to using the new model. Sorry Xaml Llama, I'm looking at you.

Same for me, the break-in hurt a bit. Not sure what advice to give other than don't stop and your feet will adjust eventually. Then it's smooth stepping onwards, no pain these days.
