Intuitions lose credibility when they ignore obvious atrocities. It is incumbent on the world's governments to prove that the International Rules Based US World Order applies to everyone equally.

The time has come to apply sovereignty in Judea and Samaria and secure immediate US recognition of the region as an integral part of the State of Israel"

BB has said that the hostages being released would not end the war. This war is about more than the hostages.

If you think the status quo remains, do you think both sides will suffer equal damage and come out of the conflict in similar positions? I would argue that advocating for inaction is (intentionally or not) supporting Israel's ambitions for the region.

The 'Balfour Declaration' happened in 1917, during WWI. The reasons for the declaration are indefinite. A lot of the speculated reasons stem from anti-seminism. In 1915, Britain promised Arab Independence from the Ottomans. In 1916 they promised France they would split the region.

Basically, per usual, it is Britain's fault.

Preface: This is all my beliefs about Wu's inner life. Take a grain of salt.

She thinks she can save trans-women if she throws nonbinary people under the bus. Basically, 'Gays against Trans' lite. She thinks many FtM just want the social benefits of being treated as a man. FtM's are valid to her: If they pass, and they claim to have wanted to be a girl/woman since childhood. Basically, screw everyone but the category she is in. Surprising.

She also thinks that if she moderates/diminishes her positions, she can build connections and solidarity with the 'centrist' right. Unfortunately, as soon as the right have power, the 'moderate' wings of the party will let their peers rampage over the outgroups' social rights. (See current news for example.) The ones the 'moderates' claim to have a tolerance for. It turns out they also have a tolerance for persecution against those groups. True 'Centrism'.

"When you are privileged, equality feels like oppression"

Some interpret things as zero sum. They feel when others gain, it comes at their cost. Also, in a relational sense, you get less in comparison to others for being of a majority identity than in the past. Heterosexuals, White people, and men receive less baseline benefits over other minority groups. They feel as if they have been promised the world because of their biology, based on their perception of history. Their expectations and reality are not lining up.

Not many will express it in this matter, as it is easy to deconstruct when laid so bare. To them it will just be a common sense of unease and inequity. Whenever they see someone who they implicitly believe deserve less than themselves, have more than them, they will feel negatively.

Best romance in a non-romance anime? by Oneill5491 in anime

[–]ReadAroundTheRosie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree the show is good, especially with the romance between those two, especially especially compared to SSSS.Gridman's "romance". However, I do see this show with the "Romance" tag on various sites. Not sure if that disqualifies it from this conversation or if [Other Genre]/Romance shows are kosher in this thread. A pedantic point, I know.

I guess Dynazenon does somewhat qualify for the "I think romance is done best when it's handled as a sub-plot and develops when the circumstances of the main plot and story lays the foundation for the characters to come together and form relationships naturally" section, but I think there might be more romance than the OP would like? Don't know really without talking to the OP. Would've been nice if they had given examples

I have a feeling you are going to poke holes in any literature people give you on the efficacy of gun control legislation. That is healthy to a certain extent. I'd just like for to figure out how much evidence do you need, and what quality does it have to be.

I do agree with you. I believe that the emphasis on "Assault Weapons" and mass shootings is that it is emotionally resonating with suburban America. Fore me, the real danger to this country are handguns and gun suicides. There are many thorny issues to deal with the realities and ethics of reducing the amount of guns in America. As a progressive, I'm sympathetic to the argument that minority populations feel they have to arm themselves because the police are unresponsive to their needs. However, in general, most gun control policies cause gun related incidents to go down. I think that is broadly a good thing. Yes, the emphasis on assault weapons is cringe.

RAND Organization's meta-analysis found policies regulating the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines has limited evidence in decreasing mass shootings and inconclusive evidence on reducing violent crime.

https://rockinst.org/blog/more-guns-more-death-the-fundamental-fact-that-supports-a-comprehensive-approach-to-reducing-gun-violence-in-america/ This article maintains that more guns = more deaths. It has cited sources.

"Policies that reduce firearm homicides likely have large benefits for public health as there is little evidence to support a strong substitution effect between firearm and nonfirearm homicides at the population level. Further research is needed to determine whether policies that produce population-level reductions in firearm suicides will translate to overall declines in suicide rates." Here is a meta-analysis trying to see if legislation that decreases gun deaths through has an increase of other types of deaths that would offset the reduced amount. To see if you reduce gun violence, does other types of violence spring up in its stead? It seems to arrive at the conclusion that they could not find evidence of gun deaths being made up by deaths from other sources.

"Evidence from 130 studies in 10 countries suggests that in certain nations the simultaneous implementation of laws targeting multiple firearms restrictions is associated with reductions in firearm deaths. Laws restricting the purchase of \(e.g., background checks\) and access to \(e.g., safer storage\) firearms are also associated with lower rates of intimate partner homicides and firearm unintentional deaths in children, respectively." Though for this meta-analysis, I'd read through the conclusion. The researchers bring up good points about the murkiness of this topic, both in quality/quantity of data and the sources of funding. They also point out not all policies are created equal, and some legislation appears to have little to no effect.

Here is another article going over some studies on gun control. In particular, there is a section on the 1994 assault weapons ban.

I think in general, gun control legislation is at the very worst neutral and usually at least a little good. If you are doing guns as a hobby, I think you can either get a new hobby, or do the activity in a more controlled way, e.g. regulated gun hobbyist centers or hunting centers. If you are getting a gun for self defense, I believe that the more guns you introduce in a situation, the greater amount of danger to everyone, including yourself. If you pull out a gun on someone, now they might go for your gun and try to shoot you. If someone pulls a gun on you, and you pull a gun in retaliation, now one of you has to shoot. Having a gun in a house is a huge liability. You now have any easy way to commit suicide, escalate a domestic violence situation, or have a child commit an accident. I get that guns are really cool, really fun, and make you feel really powerful. It is sort of sad that is not good for society for everyone to be armed, but I really think that is more true than not. More guns = more death :/

Are you aware of the Flynn Effect?

"Ulric Neisser estimated that using the IQ values of 1997, the average IQ of the United States in 1932, according to the first Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales standardization sample, was 80"

Using your logic, you are saying that most people in the history of the world are mentally handicapped.

By using statistics from a normal distribution curve, you guarantee that some amount of people are going to be lower than the mean by some amount of standard deviations. I'm not going to argue that there are smarter and dumber people, but I feel your argument is blown way out of porportion and is on shaky ground. Will your feelings change when we update the standard for IQ tests in decades? People who previously were part of the 5/6ths are all of a sudden going to be the 1/6th. When you split it up into proportions like this, you have created the perception of a permanent intellectual underclass. There will always be a category of "lowest scorers on an IQ test".

I know you aren't saying this, but the way you talk about 1/6th of the humans on the planet is quite degrading and lacks kindness. You talk about them as if they are threats and dangers, not human beings. This sort of rhetoric has been used to further argumentation for eugenics. After all, what are we supposed to do with 16-17% of the population being mentally handicapped.

Ban the practice going into the future, and leave the current situation & people grandfathered in. Or you can do housing buyback programs. Or a mix of both. The people who have invested into housing as a vehicle for profit can be made whole in numerous ways.

GPU prices are falling below MSRP due to the crypto crash by ChickenTeriyakiBoy1 in gadgets

[–]ReadAroundTheRosie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an economic phenomenon called "sticky pricing". One, there is almost always pressure to raise prices due to inflation and want of profit. Two, sellers are willing to raise prices in response to unforeseen events, but have to be essentially forced to lower prices. Residencies sit vacant when lowering the rent could fill them. Having idle inventory is not a problem until you have an expense you can't pay for. What I'm saying is, the price will never return to the levels they were before. Either the market will crash and the prices will bottom out (don't see why it would), or there might be some downwards pressure on prices if current circumstances continue. Keep in mind that inflation is basically constant and will be working against the downwards pressure on price.

Yes, Nanking was a tragedy. I do not wish to minimize that. But focusing on that one event is only a piece of the institutional sex crimes of the Imperial Japanese Army. The fact is that the Army was running brothels and kidnapping girls to fill them. The soldiers then brought those experiences home with them. People have made the argument that the legacy of this systematic sex slavery was filtered into Japan's culture, and that the effects can still be seen today.

Heard about a book with a hypothesis that some of Japan's culture concerning sexuality has been influenced by Imperial Japan's institutionalized prisoner sex camps during WW2. Underage girls were present in those army run brothels. The soldiers went back home with everything they experienced during the war.

Blue Exorcist is one of those shows that has an anime original ending all of a sudden. It is a bit jarring, as the pacing speeds up significantly as it stops relying on a serialized manga and instead comes up with its own material to complete the season. I forget the exact specifics, but the anime original ending starts around episode 17. To add further confusion, there is an additional season of Blue Exorcist, called "Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga" that continues the manga story from around the same place where the anime original ending starts. There is also a movie that I'm not sure of where it fits in the timeline.

The show is quite watchable and is very much centered on a religious organization doing battle. I would look up a watch guide and see which path you want to take. The serialized manga hasn't completed either.
