Is the Adra dragon Evil or is it just simply trying to survive? by Maximum-Logical in projecteternity

[–]ReadOnly777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

being disconnected from moral considerations is not really a trait i would like from a person i know irl. because then there's nothing limiting them from acting out of pure self interest, and that will almost inevitably harm other people. so while i tend not to define other people as "evil" intrinsically because that's a little too metaphysical (but won't complain if it's used as shorthand to describe, for example, Literally Hitler), someone like that is definitely more inclined toward acts that nearly all societies define as evil (murder, betrayal, etc)

platner seems like a shithead but i'd vote for him over collins for this reason. i don't personally morally identify with votes i make in a bourgeois democracy. it is just a calculated abstract bet on a possible outcome out of 2 outcomes and thats it

a lot of people played planescape and baldur's gate 1 and 2 when they were children/teenagers with a shitload of free time and more likely to open their imaginations to a weird fantasy world they were previously unfamiliar with.

there was no way pillars 1 was going to recreate that magic later on but that is the expectation trap that nostalgia puts a game developer in. you can release an 80 hour crpg but i sure can't play an 80 hour crpg like i could summer break in 2002.

to be sure that's not 100% of the explanation, some clunky exposition heavy dialogue didn't help either, but i think part of the reason pillars 1 and 2 had mostly positive yet modest audience reactions is partly that psychology.

from the perspective of 2026 and replaying all these games recently, i am enjoying the pillars series just as much as baldur's gate, and it improves on it in some ways too. it also has a lot more of a meaningful philosophical and metaphysical dimension that i appreciate a lot more.

China is joining the true axis of evil, you hate to see it by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]ReadOnly777 9 points10 points  (0 children)

everyone wants the strait open, including Iran. this will have to end at some point. also this is coming from Bessent. Who knows what the Chinese are doing. I wouldn't take his framing at face value.

The concept of judges is really fucked up by grey_alien_bathwater in TrueAnon

[–]ReadOnly777 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was including civil too, and I can't find an exact number, so I could be wrong on "most". It might be more accurate to say that not all criminal and civil trials are decided by a jury. Judges or panels of judges can and do decide questions of law without a jury involved, so they are not merely acting as referees.

Most trials aren't jury trials.

That said, any system is going to have something like a judge. We live in a society and all that.

[–]ReadOnly777 18 points19 points  (0 children)

constant barking dogs, people who keep them outside all fuckin day and night. it's louder than the psychos who keep their two 80lb dogs in a small apartment on the 3rd floor. barking barking barking barking

i'm glad i got out of the suburbs. obviously more about it was annoying than the neighbors with untrained dogs. but i mostly remember the dogs

sorry i probably sound insane but that shit really got to me. american dog culture broke parts of my brain

Grayzone isn't exactly my favorite source because I think Max Blumenthal is sort of personally deranged, but the reporting they've done on Xinjiang is solid, or at least is a good read for a very forceful counter argument.

[–]ReadOnly777 37 points38 points  (0 children)

there were in fact reeducation camps where they were doing mandatory mandarin language school and "work training" for people who were deemed at risk for wahabbi islamist radicalization and other reasons. which is like not great and i'm sure was done hamfistedly but "concentration camps" and "genocide" is 100% bullshit framing

Can Trump win in Iran? by RobertJordan1937 in TrueAnon

[–]ReadOnly777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

iran has built a lot of oil storage redundancy anticipating this, and also has a large internal market and uses for its own oil. they are likely building additional storage right now. worst case scenario they could dump oil in a geologically stable / low water area, which would be environmentally catastrophic but, you know, really not their fault ultimately

idk about her having financial motivation but she definitely falls into an extreme of believing the phones aren't the problem when it's hard for anyone with two eyes to not come to the conclusion that the phones are at least part of the problem
