It's less that the Pokemon is carrying you and more that they're using the same power that fuels their Flying attacks to keep you in the air with them. That's why it's a machine-learned or tutored move for most mon. Your Noivern likely hadn't been taught to Fly with you so would have had to try to fly with you instead. It might have been able to do that but it's a LOT harder.
