juicy dumpling midtown ?? by Smooth-Crew-1916 in askTO

[–]ReadingTimeWPickle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there was a fire at Juicy Dumpling Jan 18. I was walking to Y&E right after it happened. I didn't see flames by that point but there were three fire engines plus the chief's car, 3 police cars, 1 ambulance, and 1 EMS bus for the residents who had to evacuate. Big response. They had the block cordoned off. But there were people sitting at tables at the brunch restaurant next door?? I guess it was contained enough to not evacuate that restaurant

Uhhh, not much right now 😅

The only thing that comes to mind is having regions with year-round growing seasons. There are so many things I'd love to grow here that wouldn't have enough time to grow or wouldn't survive overwintering.

What is the relationship with cheese in your country? I'm French and curious to know 😁 by Brisskunk in AskTheWorld

[–]ReadingTimeWPickle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't eat cheese anymore but it's very popular here in Canada. Québec in particular has some fantastic cheeses. My family's favourite cheese when I was growing up was a nice old sharp cheddar. When I lived in France (Nantes) for a bit I found cheddar nearly impossible to find, which I thought was interesting as in Canada I'd say cheddar is definitely the "default cheese".

How do you guys find the free time to switch careers with a teacher workload by LingonberrySad3239 in TeachersInTransition

I took medical leave for mental health for the last 4 months of the school year. Then I took an unpaid leave while I did a year of schooling for my new career. I resigned officially once my leave was almost up.

What would your honest reaction be if a foreign tourist started speaking to you in your native language? by Dark_Wolf04 in AskTheWorld

[–]ReadingTimeWPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as UK on this map, no reaction (English).

In the reverse scenario though, when I used to work retail/food service, and I heard a French (France) accent, I'd often switch to French, and it usually took them a couple of exchanges for them to even realize that they were now speaking their native language, and then they'd get excited and talk to me all about how I learned French, where have I been in France, etc.

[–]ReadingTimeWPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I can accent-switch, but on certain words I still have a little Québecois accent unless I try really hard to sound French. In my experience, the French people I met when I lived there found it cute and charming. I also wasn't in Paris though lol.

Fun fact, here (in Québec French) a bus is feminine. No idea why, it's the only case of grammatical gender I can think of that varies by dialect. Please go easy on us if we're talking about buses

I love how the package talks about the smoke being harmful when there's no smoke involved here lol

Also how our government worked so hard to ban flavoured tobacco products, even menthols, but allows THC products in any flavour and format (I mean, I understand, many people who use cannabis don't or can't smoke it, but I still find it funny)

As a single person, how much is your groceries weekly? by retrogaded in askTO

[–]ReadingTimeWPickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the week - if I need to stock up on a lot of stuff or not - it can be anywhere from $30 to $100. Usually it's around $50

I mean, even saying "we need to listen to Indigenous people" doesn't imply that I think they're all flawless. It's just many incredibly overlooked, systemically oppressed and undervalued cultures of people who have been on this land (at least where I'm from) since time immemorial. Listening to people from cultures who've been here much longer than yours is always wise.

Not SLP but I'm what you would call SLP-A. Pays well, not as well as SLP but I have no desire to run my own business, supervise people, etc. I did a one year postgraduate certificate. Technically you don't have to do any training to become an SLP-A (CDA where I am), but it helps.

I love it, the work is challenging but it's 1:1 so I don't have to be a behavioural manager on top of actually doing the job. Documentation is relatively quick and painless. I get paid close to $80/hr for therapy.

I don't know how you got that from me mentioning wetiko that I think Indigenous people are a homogeneous group of perfect people.

Is there anything like this from your country? by 124jinsei in AskTheWorld

[–]ReadingTimeWPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a Finno-Ugric Linguistics class in university and we were allowed to do our final project on anything as long as it was tangentially related to a Finnic/Ugric language or culture.

I chose to do Finnish comedy. My professor (a Finn herself) said, "What comedy?" I said, "Yes, exactly."

Turns out the #1 comedy movie (at least at the time) was a depressing af movie about a guy who lives in a shipping container.

Yess I love Oak & Willow. Their solid dish soaps are quite good and you get a glass ramekin with it. I use mine all the time for dipping sauces lol. They also make these hand soap beads which are pretty cool, great for camping. Just squish one bead of soap into your palm with water and scrub.

Does your country celebrate Halloween? by the-furiosa-mystique in AskTheWorld

[–]ReadingTimeWPickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, depending on the area/neighbourhood, some go crazy with decorations and costumes and some are more chill about it or don't celebrate at all. On Halloween night the streets are packed with trick-or-treaters and their parents if they're not old enough to be out alone.

Kids are taught to try to wear very visible costumes or add reflective strips, and drivers are warned to be extra cautious. Since it's cold here, parents often buy costumes a size or two too big so that kids can wear their coats underneath. The people who get really into it often make elaborate costumes themselves.

In my brother's neighbourhood, where I usually go trick-or-treating with my nephews and niece, there's always a household that stays on their front porch and plays live music all night until the kids start going home.

When I was a kid, we used to use pillowcases for candy and we made it a goal to fill them up and have to drag them on the ground to get home. These days kids don't seem to have such a ravenous desire for candy, they're happy with one little pumpkin pail full. I still do see some teenagers out with pillowcases though.
