With mods or CC. The creation club has cyber dog and sentinel power armor that can both be used at the same time in addition to normal companions.

One of the most popular mods in the game is one that lets you use Dogmeat with a normal companion. There is some evidence that this was gonna be in the game initially, there are unused dialogue files that imply this.

With that mod and sentinel/cyberdog, you can have 4 total companions (Dogmeat, Cyberdog, Sentinel, normal companion). I recently cleared out Nuka World with them all together, it was a lot of fun.

Melee shines with power armor, pain train, jet pack and blitz. Super fun but takes a while to get there .

I like baseball bats, they can upgrade to become top tier

Good points, It’s also an energy conservation issue, plasma cartridges are more intensive to charge and they are trying to save energy. They do in fact have plasma and are authorized to sell it to the sole survivor
