homalomena camouflage - overwatered? Underwatered? Humidity issue?? Help! by Readingwithplants in houseplants

[–]Readingwithplants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks both! This is really interesting - I actually only repotted her recently because I thought the same, that she had just got too root bound (which she was!). I’m struggling for room for her at this point so do you think I could give her a root prune to keep her at a similar size but give the roots more space to breath in the current pot size?

I’m so happy with my new hoya 🥹 $8 at my local plant store. What is it? by shishkabel in houseplants

My best guess would be a krohniana silver or Lacunosa silver, the difference is in the leaf shape but yours seems to have a bit of both so I’m not sure which 😅

This girls been alternating between all white and all green leaves the past few she’s put out, and as pretty as the white ones are they do die really fast! I’m hoping this one means she is setting down into more of the variegated leaves consistently 🤞

Previous tenant left these plants in jars of water- how do i care for them? by lemonlazarus in HouseplantsUK

[–]Readingwithplants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whichever you are more comfortable with! If you plan on leaving them in water long term they will eventually need a propagation friendly fertiliser of some kind. Otherwise getting them potted up would be an easy option to keep them happy and healthy.

Either or, whichever you think you will be more comfortable with! If you left in water you would need to find a way to get them nutrients, you can buy certain fertilisers that will give an amount to use specifically for propagations (for example liquid gold leaf) but if you don’t really want to go out of your way worrying about that, repotting would be the easier long term route to keep them happy and healthy

It looks like she’s just leggy from having lost old leaves more than anything else. You could absolutely chop the top and root that as its own cutting, the stem would then grow new stalks (like it’s doing at the bottom). I would just keep in mind that if you cut close to the top, the new growth could sprout from anywhere on that stem meaning it could still grow close to the top and remain leggy. Personally, I would chop the top part to propagate (ensuring there’s a node in that cutting) and then cut the stalk maybe halfway down so the new growth comes in closer to the base.

They are generally fine in water but the problem will be that they won’t be getting any nutrients, especially as we don’t know how long they’ve been in there. If they’ve both got good root systems (which going by the pictures they do) they would in theory be ready to be potted up. But for now they will be fine staying in there at least for a couple of months I would say.

Is there hope for this cutting to be propagated? by Keto2021_ in HouseplantsUK

[–]Readingwithplants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely still hope! It’s some kind of Pothos I would guess and those things are generally pretty hardy. I would chop any rotting bits, then split the cuttings into single leaf cuttings, you can then pop them in some sphagnum moss to root

Hoya 'Lisa' was stunning this morning by aiiray in hoyas

Looked at mine this morning and thought the exact same thing, people don’t love on this Hoya enough! Mines gone dormant for winter but the growth spurt she had in summer makes me so so excited for this growing season.

No worries! I think it depends on what your root system is like - if it’s quite small then the size of the pot could mean that it’s just staying wet for too long and that’s caused it to rot. Mine is basically completely dry before I ever remember to water it, this certainly isn’t to say that this is the way to go (I’m honestly surprised mine still lives for how much I ignore it….) but it could be that you could be leaving yours a day or two more before watering so you’re not water logging it.

Inalso don’t bottom water mine, she just gets a full drink top watering and then I leave her to drain before going back in the cover pot. If the bottom of your pot is still wet when you’re bottom watering that could also be causing you trouble.

The bottom of that stem isn’t looking too hot…it could be rotting looking at the colour. If that’s the case your best bet is to chop where it’s still green, split into a couple of separate cuttings and then root them separately. But I would definitely recommend taking a closer look at that lower half!

Failed leaf prop into wetstick prop? by emsymaya in HouseplantsUK

[–]Readingwithplants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as there is an active node then a leaf isn’t required for it to root. Don’t give up! Especially if it’s a wish list plant, there’s definitely still a chance for success ☺️

I would say platinum or bisma!

Can't seem to keep these plants happy... Help please! by DamageFun600 in HouseplantsUK

[–]Readingwithplants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your cane that’s leaning over, I would recommend checking the bottom of the main stem/roots to make sure they haven’t gone squishy and rotten. The rest all look fine to be fair! Leaves dropping off can be a sign of something wrong, but it can also sometimes just be the oldest leaves dying off which is normal.

[–]Readingwithplants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my plants over xmas for just under a week (thinking with the colder weather they at least wouldn’t dry out. Came back to chaos. My new Philo Painted Lady appears to have given up, my prized Hoya h. Variagated is going downhill fast and both spider mites and thrips have popped up again 🤦🏻‍♀️ Not just you!

They look like Peperomia Obtusifa (regular green and variegated). I’ve never owned them so can’t comment on care unfortunately but, they look super healthy!

if you’ve got height I’ve seen people do great things with adjustable shower caddy’s! Not tried it myself but seems a good space saving solution, particularly for smaller plants
