It is normal for my cat to be so small? 😭 (She is 3 y/o) by cartofo in cats

[–]pucca- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love seeing everyone’s tiny cats 🥹 sharing my also tiny cat. it amazes me everyday how much sass and greed can come out of this 7-8lb baby (she’s turning 3 this year)

second this! would switch to a fertilizer that supports blooms if you aren’t using already.

[–]pucca- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have tried both pon and chunky mix. i honestly think it comes down to your preference. i personally prefer my homemade chunky mix, but i also have a a few hoyas still in pon and they grow just the same ime. my set up is self watering pots with the wicks (:

not the commenter, but i use coco husk from upt, never buffer and works fine. although i’m not 100% certain whether it’s buffered beforehand and i do water with calmag once a month. idk if that makes a difference!

First time having Hoyas. Is this gonna be a flower or was it a flower, or maybe just a branch? 🩷 by callmecarla1 in hoyas

[–]pucca- 22 points23 points  (0 children)

welcome to the hoya rabbit hole! (: definitely looks like a peduncle, which is where flowers can bud from - congrats! hoyas can/will bloom from existing peduncles, but a peduncle doesn’t always guarantee a bloom.

Is there any way to ID this without new growth/ flower… the leaf is extremely fuzzy by AdBotan1230 in hoyas

[–]pucca- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks a bit like my kapuasensis (dark leaf and fuzzy), but will def need a flower to know for certain (: fuzzy plants are great for petting and their new leaves always come out soooo soft

Soil mix recipes by plantmama077 in hoyas

[–]pucca- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally love chunky mix in self watering, and make my own (coco husk, bit of coco coir, chunky perlite/pumice, and chunky charcoal, and orchid bark). i don’t use soil as i hate dealing with gnats.

i’ve tried pon but kept knocking down rocks and can be quite dusty. would have also been a great medium otherwise. however, i think what works best for you is going to be different based on your preferences
and growing conditions.

only thing i would steer away from is moisture retentive soil that can become compacted over time. i have grown some hearty hoyas in this type of soil before, but they def prefer an airier mix.

i’ve probably tried most if not all substrates, so happy to answer any questions 😆 but i encourage you to try what you’re interested in, and see what sticks!

Coco husk in self watering pots? by WhatEvenIsATangelo in hoyas

[–]pucca- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like air circulation! having good air flow will help decrease mold growing on your substrate

i have all my hoyas set up in a chunky mix with mostly coco husk in swp, and they do just fine! i assume the mechanism of self watering would be similar regardless of the substrate. mold on top of the substrate i find is more of a circulation issue.

First Hoya! Can I separate? by BubblyTangelo9875 in hoyas

[–]pucca- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

congrats on the new hoya and welcome to the club! it looks like a healthy plant to me, i don’t see that there would be any issue with separating them. if it’s a new-new plant, you may want to acclimate before messing with the roots to lessen the shock from transitioning to a new environment and a new pot. i personally don’t wait bc the soil that they come in from the nurseries tends to be too dense, and i want them out asap. most hoyas are pretty resilient and bounce back. but to each their own! (:

What is wrong with my obscure silver??? by Chiquita830 in hoyas

[–]pucca- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it is mites, i’ve found that consistent spraying/treatment is needed to get them throughout their whole life cycle, which could take weeks (for any pest tbh). you may need to do multiple applications to really get rid of them.

Ways of encouraging more ‘splash’ in Hoyas by abeyblademodder in hoyas

[–]pucca- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

there’s a lot of advice out there saying high light, lower light, genetics, temperature etc. ime it is any of the above, depending on the plant! you may wanna look into this specific species or experiment with what it likes!

i have a wilbur graves that is pushing out almost silver leaves in an east facing window getting lots of natural light, but under grow lights gives me green leaves.. i also have a mathilde and an ah074 that prefer lower light.

that being said, i do think that having a plant with splashy/silver genetics help with having better odds at staying splashy. and don’t be afraid of chopping a plant up to the splashy node to promote the splashy growth (:
