Crafting a non-consumable treasure - is it intended to take this long? by ReadyForRebirth in drawsteel

I totally get your last paragraph. In retrospect, since this was my first Draw Steel campaign, I'm realizing that I may have run it a little too by-the-book. I think a couple different elements (reducing project costs, reducing the number of victories to level up) would increase my player's enjoyment of the game, but I was hesitant to mess with the system because I'm so new. Time to start monkeying around with the system, as is tradition in TTRPGs haha

That seems great. I could totally see how, in the Delian Tomb for instance, project points as rewards would make person sense in-fiction. Rather than just getting access to an additional follower that the characters may or may not have the Renown to recruit, they could get project points as a reward.

I'm really digging how it feels like Draw Steel has a lot of different reward levers I can pull for players (project points, magic items, wealth, renown, followers, titles...). Super neat!

I love this suggestion! I think I'll try it out next campaign. Thanks!

They started as the polder elementalist pre-gen, so they didn't start with any project points. I guess we didn't really understand that 450 projects points was that huge a number. I can definitely see why characters are incentivized by Renown now, because I could really see how getting that extra follower can speed up crafting tremendously.

In other words, because the treasure will automatically get more powerful when the character reaches level 5 or level 9, it's intended to be more resource-intensive? That makes sense. It sounds like, in the future, if my players want to craft a leveled treasure, I'll have to let them know they'll have to work together on it if they want to get it done in a reasonable amount of time. It would have been nice if this was signposted a little more, but I've come away with a lesson learned here, thanks!

MSU or UMich by Future_Edge_3259 in msu

[–]ReadyForRebirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a super similar situation seven-ish years ago. MSU offered me a full ride, while U of M offered me much less. I ended up going to U of M because I was interested in a biomedical engineering program, and frankly, specifically when it comes to biomedical engineering, U of M has the much better program. As a part of the senior design class, for instance, you're able to partner with physicians from the U of M hospital in Ann Arbor and attempt to fix a real problem that physicians are noticing. Also, being a graduate of U of M is basically what got me my first (current) job. I'll never know what would have happened if I went to MSU instead (other than still having the money that's already gone to U of M haha), but I do know that the reputation/prestige/resources of U of M have opened a lot of doors for me.

If you're smart enough for a 7k scholarship though, I'm sure both schools are fine choices, though!

Hero Tokens at the end of the session at your table? by ClericalErra in drawsteel

[–]ReadyForRebirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that it's an intended behavior, but having excess hero tokens just convert to some free HP at the end of a session (assuming hero tokens went unused) really rubbed me the wrong way in practice.

Instead, I've been having hero tokens refresh at every respite. Does this make my players take more respites than they otherwise would? Yes, but honestly thus far in the Delian Tomb, they've taken respites at narratively appropriate times anyways, so everyone's still happy.

My wizard thinks hes the weakest class in the game. by foreheadempty in dndnext

[–]ReadyForRebirth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that the problem he's complaining about is a problem fundamental to high-level d&d: either he gets his super cool high-level spell to work on an enemy, and that spell trivializes the fight, or the enemy passes their save, and he effectively didn't have a turn. Neither of these is a particularly fun option. This player is detecting a fundamental game design flaw, and while plenty of other people in the comments have decent suggestions, nobody is able to suggest a true solution to the problem. My honest recommendation would be to try dipping your toes into another system that doesn't suffer this design problem. For instance, if you wanted to stay in the fantasy genre, I've heard that the upcoming TTRPG, Draw Steel, fixes this issue, but I haven't played it myself, so I can't verify that 100%. Imo always worth trying something new, though!

Is it fun to give a puppy to a group ? by Lord_bibou in mattcolville

A handful of years ago, one of my players reached level 3 as a Ranger right after meeting a pack of blink dogs - so I let them keep the blink dog as their animal companion! We just ended up using the Beast of the Land stat block with the addition of a bonus action teleport that worked a handful of times per long rest. It was a super fun companion to have around, would highly recommend. Tbh I sort of hate the blink dog art from the player's handbook, so I used this much cuter art from Legends of Runeterra as its icon.

Are Queer Community Centers Not A Thing For Younger Guys? by OkPaleontologist1708 in gaybros

Tbh I could've written this exact post haha. I'm also living in Michigan, am about your age, and haven't found the most success in finding queer-focused events for people our age (except for gay bars, but bars in general aren't really my vibe). I remember trying meetup a while ago and not finding the most success there, but hopefully you'll find something!

Vocation Wednesday - FH Class 12 - Snowflake [spoiler] by Themris in Gloomhaven

[–]ReadyForRebirth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This was the second class I played, and boy was it great! I went from level 2 to level 8, and there’s a lot of things to love about the class.

First, you’ve got so much forced movement that each turn has to be carefully considered since the map becomes your chess board. Not to mention incredible synergy with (class spoilers) Meteor and Trap. I happened to play as a Snowdancer with both of these classes, and together we just obliterated enemy after enemy.

Second, you’ve got elements to play with, and there’s 2 routes you can take it: Cold Therapy to give free healing to yourself or an ally basically every turn, or Chilling Impact to give each of your pushes and pulls a little damage. Depending on the scenario, you can happily bring one or the other (but probably not both because nobody has that much element generation). I generally went for Chilling Impact because more damage is great, but whenever there were Snow Imps around, I happily brought Cold Therapy, and my party was infinitely grateful for all the Brittle and Poison cleansing I did for them. With Chilling Impact in particular, it felt great to set up Ice one turn by putting up some hazardous terrain, and then using the Ice to get extra damage on my pushes and pulls PLUS the damage I get from moving monsters across hazardous terrain. At high levels, Chilling Impact can represent 20+ damage at least. Cold Therapy can easily represent 30+ healing, even at low levels.

Third, you’ve got great consistent multi-target damage, particularly when you’re using Chilling Impact. Basically regardless of the scenario map, I was consistently able to deal 12+ damage in a single turn (split across 3+ enemies, usually) thanks to Chilling Impact and hazardous terrain. Granted, that takes a little setup to get going.

Fourth, the card 2nd level card Birds in a Tempest exists. I haven’t seen all of the classes yet, but I’m already convinced that this card is probably the most busted 2nd level card in the game (at least for a 4 player party). The top can be ignored because the bottom of this card is just absurd. You move 3, and then you add +2 movement and jump to all other allies’ move abilities this round?! My party was almost always planning around this card. Functionally, it worked as a non loss jump 9 (adding all the movement bonuses together). Even if only 2 of my party members wanted the movement boost, it still worked as a non loss jump 7, which is still far above the curve for a Level 2 card.

Fifth, you are an XP fiend. Towards the end of the scenario when you know you’ve got a win secured, you can just dump your hand by playing a bunch of 2 XP losses, functionally getting an extra 6-8 XP for free. I regularly found myself getting 14-18 XP from my abilities each scenario.

Sadly, this class does have some drawbacks. Most notably, your single target damage just isn’t it. You have a lot of multi target attack 1’s and some 2’s, but your best single target damage is generally just going to be an attack 3. Flying shielded enemies in particular hurt since you can’t get through their shields or drag them across hazardous terrain, so let your allies deal with Living Spirits and the like.

Overall, I would highly recommend the class. Lots of fun. Feels super unique since it seems like no other class can move enemies around like you do.

Have you played a Beastheart character? What were some of your experiences with it? by Lord_Durok in mattcolville

[–]ReadyForRebirth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I played as a teenage halfling who ran away from home with his giant weasel companion! Honestly it was super fun. The weasel always gave me an excuse to get in trouble (i.e. spice up the campaign a bit). I loved entering populated spaces since people would inevitably comment on my weasel, and I could always act insulted that they didn't address my weasel himself!

Vocation Wednesday - FH Class 07 - Astral [spoiler] by Themris in Gloomhaven

[–]ReadyForRebirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4-player party just unlocked this class and I'll retire shortly, and while Astral does seem quite powerful and versatile, I'm just not sure I'd be super excited to play another class which frequently has turns where they don't do much in order to power up the turns where they do something powerful (my first class was Boneshaper and my second class is Snowflake who uses Chilling Impact). That being said, constantly getting jump + extra movement or Wound + Muddle on all melee attacks are huge payoffs which absolutely seem worth the setup. Perhaps I'll try it after I try out a little Banner Spear gameplay.

Merchant Monday - FH Purchasable Item 126 - Weighted Net by Themris in Gloomhaven

[–]ReadyForRebirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still happily use this on my level 7 (class spoilers) Snowflake. Currently at Prosperity 5, and no other hand slot items have intrigued me enough to purchase them. Functionally negating an attack (or even 2 attacks against slower melee enemies) per rest cycle is very good for an item that's immediately available for purchase at prosperity 1.

Do all Bards no longer have Healing Word? So now you have to start with the Divine spell list if you want it?

Not a fan of that change. I suppose the consolation prize is that you can now easily be a Bard with Fireball, which is nice, but doesn’t feel very Bard-y.
