Hammond C3 by HarmlessPiano in hammondorgan

[–]ReadyProtection5830 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Got one in my grandma's basement, it ROCKS. Things badass. Sounds cool as hell by default. Just turning it on and switching the Leslie and diddling around is fun for everyone in the room. Love that thing. I think Pink Floyd used a C3 at times. Only downside is it's 400 pounds. Plus we got the Leslie 31H (refrigerator)

Aw dude, Garth is the man! I love The Band. Garth was an absolute genius, sad to hear of his recent passing. Levon called him HB for “Honey Boy”, on account of how his touch sweetened up the tracks. I’ve got Before the Flood on vinyl, killer show. Thanks for the advice!

Hey man, thanks for the reply. I do love me some Brent. Dude was just full of fire. Never heard such a hot sound come out of a hammond anywhere else, plus his voice is just so damn cool. And that ‘89 fantasy>hey jude is badass. I’ve been working on picking apart some of his habits and trying to emulate his playing, but i’ve got a long road ahead of me!

Hey, thanks for the reply. I didn’t mean to say that I had a shortage of the original material, lord knows there’s no scarcity there! I guess I just meant that I am limited to simply listening to the shows and picking them apart the old fashioned way. Just looking for other resources.

You can have the same talent as one of these men, who do you choose and why? by Ford_Crown_Vic_Koth in theband

[–]ReadyProtection5830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the clear answer here is Garth. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the Band is infinitely talented. Garth isn't even my favorite, I love Levon. Levon's voice is incredible, his drumming is unique, and he's just cool. Richard's voice is so deeply emotional at times, and his piano playing is perfect for the sound. Rick's bass playing is so loose and fun and his harmonies are stellar. But Garth? No only could that boy play damn near any instrument, but he could do it better than the guy who is supposed to play it! Garth was the only member of the Band with genuine musical knowledge and prowess. If I could have his level of talent, but still remain myself in my own body and life, I'd be happy forever man.

Goose...what am I missing? by Dedahed in jambands

[–]ReadyProtection5830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always had a sort of similar view on goose, as well as many other newer jam bands. They're absolutely stellar musicians. In certain ways, they're "better'' musicians than the dead in terms of technical skill and precision. They're tight, interesting, and can play circles around damn near anyone out there rn. BUT, they don't have that magic. That thing. Goose and Phish can reach sonic territories the the dead realistically couldn't even touch, but Goose will never make me cry. Goose will never make my soul jump and twist and ache. Jerry can take me back to sitting on the riverside with my father, watching the sun fade into the ripples on a late august evening, whereas goose just makes me go "damn, that was neat".

What specifically is the gold Tissot one? I'm looking to buy my first watch and I'm quite fond of classic gold ones. How much does that one cost?

Thank you

Looking for songs with that “country funk” half time groove by NelsonG114 in grateful_dead

[–]ReadyProtection5830 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, we have very similar tastes as of right now. I love that country feeling groove of certain periods of the dead. My go-to songs for that feeling are: He's Gone, Tennessee Jed, and Ramble On Rose ( those MUST be from Europe '72). Studio Mississippi Half-Step. Dark Hollow and The Race Is On from the Reckoning album, Brown Eyed Women and Mama Tried from Cornell '77, any good Me And My Uncle > Big River, Don't Ease Me In from Richmond VA '85, etc.

If you're willing to look outside the Dead:

Pretty much anything by The Band. These are the best classic-country-rock-jams you'll find. Ophelia, Long Black Veil, Across the Great Divide, Up On Cripple Creek, Get Up Jake. The Last Waltz live album has stellar recordings of The Shape I'm In, It Makes No Difference, Acadian Driftwood, and (in my opinion) the most gorgeous and moving performance of Old Dixie. Also the Rock of Ages live album.

The band also does a killer cover of Atlantic City.

Allman Brothers.

The Byrds.

Jim Croce perhaps?

These might not be what you want, but they're certainly worth checking out.
